John Street: Bad Judgment and Stalking Horse?

Philadelphia is known for its political wars. Personal feuds have been a fabric of life in the big city. But former Mayor John Street’s personal attacks in the media against Mayor Michael Nutter are embarrassing  – to Street. Street and Nutter have long despised each other. They just can’t stand each other. It’s a relationship borne from years of feuding in City Council, and later, when Street became Mayor. It is wise that Nutter has mainly avoided striking back. It would demean his office.

It is ironic that Street attacks Nutter’s leadership style, because in comparison to the regime run by Street, it is a ray of sunshine. Nutter has his problems, but compared to Street as Mayor, Mike Nutter is a cakewalk. Street, a man of tremendous intellect, served like he was the last angry man. He never wanted input, derided the press for all his failings, and spoke angrily when anyone dare criticize his policies. John Street sometimes looked like he had a chip on his shoulder the size of a cheese steak. I never understood it. One time, I told him privately that he needed to give more access to the press. He said he would. But he turned into the most inaccessible Mayor in recent history. Despite that, on a personal basis, I liked him. Most of us in the media did like him. We respected his knowledge of government, and his love for Philadelphia.

Michael Nutter has no such respect for Street. And certainly Street’s attacks on him will just make it worse. Street’s suggestion that Nutter is not really a black Mayor are very divisive. The city needs more “bringing together” than “pulling apart.” Actually, the whole region  needs that. It’s sad enough that White House aspirants like Newt Gingrich try to divide and conquer. We don’t need a former Mayor getting into that business.

Now, Street appears to be a stalking horse for Sam Katz who will make one final shot, we believe, at running for Mayor, this time, as a Democrat.

Nutter and Katz appeal to a similar constituency. If Mayor Street believes he can deliver the black vote to Sam Katz, he is deluding himself.

For his part, Katz is an appealing guy with great smarts. But having angry John Street on your side, with his current attacks on Nutter, might be a campaign killer.

In the meantime, it would be good if John and Mike could find a place to have lunch, and bury the hatchet. I would serve as moderator for that one. In fact, I would even buy.

Respect is something that former and current Mayors deserve.

The Jets Score One For Stupidity

The report this week about the female journalist,  pestered by the New York Jets, AKA Buddy Ryan’s revenge, is not surprising. Apologists for the Jets charge that the reporter probably compromised herself by her unprofessional attire and headline-grabbing antics. There should be zero tolerance in the NFL for any form of sexual harassment. I mean Zero Tolerance.  Rex Ryan, heir to the Buddy Ryan legacy, should get his crazy team together. As Ashley Fox reported so eloquently in the Inky this week, pro athletes have been getting away with this stuff for years. Buddy Ryan, Rex’s Dad and the ex-Eagles coach, at least had some class to back up his bluster. Raging Rex and the Gang-Green should get their acts together. Any Reid would never put up with that kind of sexual innuendo and intimidation.

The NFL is not a guiltless party in these escapades. Frankly, the outrage from the league about the Jets behavior was far from serious enough. The NFL has a strict code of conduct. As I said, there needs to be zero tolerance. What the reporter was wearing has nothing to do with the ugly example that the Jets set the other day.

CHRISTINE O’DONNELL

Sarah Palin has advised Christine O’Donnell, the Tea Party upset winner in Delaware, to do most of her speaking through Fox News. But, just a day before  scheduled appearances on Fox News and CBS Sunday Shows, O’Donnell canceled. I have to tell you: It is unheard of to cancel a national Sunday show. What’s going on here? Did Bill Maher’s release of tape of O’Donnell talking about her dabbling into witchcraft, give the candidate the shakes?

OBAMA-SESTAK -PERFECT TOGETHER?

The President comes to Philadelphia Monday to appear at a fundraiser for Joe Sestak who is struggling to gain ground on Republican Pat Toomey in the battle for Pa. Senate. The visit is a bit of a surprise, considering the cool relationship between Sestak and the White House, which Sestak told me on Voice of Reason earlier this year. tried to persuade him not to run. The President’s visit may be evidence that with six weeks out, both Sestak and the White House , adversaries in the past, are impressed by Toomey’s resiliency.

Will DA Probe PHA- Tea Party in Delaware – Eagles Vintage Green Forever!

The headlines in the papers, and the stories that follow them, have been a blight on Philadelphia. The entire Carl Greene episode is embarrassing, but worse than that is the tepid, almost non-reaction from elected officials. Ex-Mayor Street, the captain of the housing authority ship, has been the most outspoken, and  he is now at war with Greene. But is it because Greene dared to hire a private eye to spy on a top aide to Street? Or is it because the revelations of Greene’s alleged misbehavior are a reflection on Street’s stewardship of the Housing Authority board. By now, we all know that this crisis is cascading, maybe out of control, and perhaps with implications for other officials.

But there is a missing voice. If rules and regulations have been broken, if crimes have been allegedly committed, and if the taxpayer’s money has been misspent, where the District Attorney of Philadelphia? The Feds are investigating because federal funds are involved. But local funds are also involved. So when  is DA Seth Williams going to launch an investigation?

HIGH “TEA” IN DELAWARE-

Who knows? The Tea Party Express may resurrect the GOP or destroy it. The newest effort to send Delaware Republican icon Mike Castle into retirement is bold, especially since Castle is beloved in Delaware. Christine O’Donnell is supported by the Tea Party and Jim DeMint, the South Carolina super conservative. The Tea Party Express knows that a Castle loss may guarantee a Democratic victory in November, which leads you to wonder whether the Tea Party really cares about Republicans taking back control of Congress.

EAGLES GREEN

This comment will not change the course of history, but in the aftermath of the Eagles’ loss to the cheeseheads, there is  missing debate. Along with Michael Vick, the Eagles return to the old Kelly Green was fantastic. I think the Eagles should stick with the vintage color. The current Eagles look is terrific. The new logo is dramatic. But the older green is a more attractive color. I know that the team has some challenges ahead. Remember it is only one game. But uniforms leave a lasting impression. And the old Eagles green is much more attractive than the new and darker green.

On the football side: It was a better game than the writers will admit to. The fans never gave up, and neither did the team.

Death Of A Legend – A Chance Meeting On an Airplane – Playing With Fire in Philadelphia

Off for a few days, so I’m bundled up with a bit of energy.

First of all: on a plane coming back to Philadelphia, I sat next to a member of the Armed forces. Writing about our warriors is one thing. Meeting them is another. This airman was so incredibly dedicated to the work ahead. It’s more than a career. Away from the politics of the day, the men and women of the Armed forces are doing the job that they were trained to do. Sometimes we forget about them as individuals. They are making a sacrifice,  sometimes leaving behind an easier life. Although, I would say, that for the service member I chatted with , this career is no sacrifice, but a calling.

WHAT’S UP?

Good question at the White House these days. The not-so-loyal opposition is on the attack about the economy. Let’s face it – just like in Philadelphia – money talks and you know what walks! Why is the White House money team so lacking in its communication with the voting public? Do you think it’s time for the Treasury Secretary to either 1. Quit 2. Take a course in communications. 3. Go to lunch with Robert Gibbs, the most underrated Press Secretary ever.  This is a real problem. I’m getting a bit nostalgic for Paul Volker,

SMERCONISH

America’s current and future radio (and TV) talk star Michael Smerconish had a dead-on piece in the Daily News Wednesday (click on Philly.com). The point–Philadelphia is spending a small fortune to crackdown on people who don’t recycle (including a crackdown on some who do) , while at the same time City Hall is cutting back on fire protection, What’s more important? I would say playing with fire is a dangerous Philadelphia game. I don’t want my friend to get a big head, but Smerconish is right on!

DEATH OF A LEGEND -

You may not have heard of him, but Joe Drabyak of Chester County Books was a legend, and a hero to me and hundreds of writers. Joe , once the leader of the NAIBA (New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association)  died this past week, much too soon. Joe was an avid reader, and he never recommended a book that I didn’t like. He was an inspiration to writers, many of whom were catapulted to fame by Joe’s ability to spot talent. Joe Drabyak was more important than book reviewers and critics. He was an open-minded literary giant, who leaves behind a legacy of quality, professionalism, and thousands of people who found reading to be one of the most exciting aspects of life.
