Immigrant Debate Erupts in Emotion – Divisions Remain Deep
I’ve felt, for months now, that the immigration debate is tearing the country apart. But it really came home to me during the taping of Voice of Reason, a two parter, that airs tonight and next Sunday night, July 25th, on the Comcast Network. We had a short interview with Pa. State Representative Daryl Metcalfe. Metcalfe is an exciter extraordinaire, suggesting that illegal immigrants in Pa. are responsible for most of the rapes and murders. The State Rep is wrong, but let’s face it, he represents a growing number of Americans, almost two thirds in most polls, that want similar laws to the tough anti-immigration law in Arizona.
Also on the show, WPHT Big Talker host Dom Giordano. Dom is much more reasonable than Metcalfe, but he knows there’s a big issue out there, and that many Americans want action. Facing off on other side, three immigration activists including Mary O’Callaghan, a former immigrant from Ireland, now a citizen and a well-known spokesperson legal immigration. The only thing missing was cheese steak commander Joey Vento. He may join us next week. I’m told that watching Joey and Mary together is the championship of all debates on immigration.
Why is this debate so important? Because it is one of the great issues of the times. The Obama administration, citing Constitutional powers, has filed suit against the Arizona law. The Arizona Governor has labeled immigrants from Mexico as criminals. which is certainly a broad brush approach, wouldn’t you say? But the latest national surveys show about 20 percent of Americans seeking a tougher law than the one in Arizona. You may disagree or agree with that sentiment ,but understanding each sides point of view, is critical in this debate.

Immigration “activists” like Mary O’Callaghan have no credibility in the debate, because they equate “illegal immigration” with “immigration”.
When you hear them speak about it, they never qualify it – they only say “immigration”, as if there is no difference.
The sad thing is that in their mind, there is no difference.

Larry, there are many legal immigrants, naturalized citizens and children of immigrants who stand for the rule of law, a strong border security policy, and enforcement of our immigration laws without favoritism toward, or discrimination against anyone because of race, color, religion, gender or national origin. The bottom line is we should not have a system where those who violate our laws and/or cheat in the immigration process are in the end rewarded with the same benefits and privileges of legal residency that are earned by those who play by the rules. As a daughter of legal immigrants from Latin America, my parents taught us to respect the laws, traditions, customs and norms of their beloved adopted homeland and we expect everyone to do so no matter the country of origin. As a Pennsylvanian, I support the efforts of Democract Rep. Harry Readshaw, Dem. State Rep. John Galloway and Republican State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe in stepping up to introduce legislation that would address the illegal immigration problem in PA. Ya es Hora!

Immigration reform is nothing but code speak for amnesty for criminal illegal aliens. We don’t need any immigration reform, we need law enforcement reform. The US already takes in more legal immigrants every year then every other nation in the world combined. That is more then generous enough. It would not be fair to the millions around the world waiting to get legal visas if we rewarded these criminal foreign nationals with citizenship.

Larry Kane obviously enjoins with those who: a)insult the intelligence of anyone with an IQ above 10; or, b)plays the semantics game (equating legal immigrants with illegal aliens)in an attempt to whitewash criminal activity. In either case he seriously underestimates the intelligence of the majority of Americans.
To equate Rep Metcalfe with Mary O’Callaghan is analogous to comparing a house guest with a burglar. One (Metcalfe)works tirelessly to rid our state of illegal aliens which, according to latest studies cost PA taxpayers $1.4 billion a year, while the other (O’Callaghan)spends 100% of her energies in encouraging illegal aliens to continue their illegal behavior, including advising them on how they can further steal from the already over-burdened taxpayers.
Metcalfe is paid to uphold our laws and protect and defend his constituents; so, too, is O’Callaghan paid to advocate for people who have no right to be in this country. Of the two, I question the motives of an immigrant (O’Callaghan) who swore allegiance to to this country yet spends her time tearing apart the very fabric upon which we were founded; i.e., law and order.
Someone should inform Larry Kane of the difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien. Someone should also question him as to why he denigrates a representative (Metcalfe) who upholds our laws and honors his oath of office while simultaneously excusing and honoring an immigrant(O’Callaghan) who is committing a federal crime – aiding and abetting illegal aliens.
Kathleen, you must be a newcomer. Larry puts very little thought or research into his topics. He does not check grammar or spelling. He posts and disappears for another week. Maybe you are expecting too much from a retired journalist.

When i was a kid i could make a fortune in the summer. Mow lawns, work at the local country club, apprentice with a contractor, do basically what all these illegal immigrants are doing now. What a roller coaster ride for Shirley Sherrod these past two days. One momment she’s the head of some Department at the USDA and the the next momment the White House has her pull over to the side of the road and tex her resignation in. And she’s not even a racist.
