On Assignment -Reflections From High School Web Scandal and Sestak-Specter

Sometimes you have to leave town to get a better picture on the stories you left behind. I’m home now after a research trip to Britain for a new book project.  I did not get delayed by the Icelandic ash. But, I did do a lot of thinking about some of the stories that have engaged us in the last several months. One of them came quickly to mind, when a man I was interviewing in London, asked me, “You’re from Philadelphia. Is that where the teenagers are spied on by the schools?”

The question just showed me how far the spygate scandal in the suburbs has hurt our reputation.

And so the story remains in my gut. What I just can’t get out of my mind is the failure of administrators and others at the top to perceive what a mess they’ve made to the incredible reputation of the Lower Merion school district. The more I think about it, the madder I get. How could anyone believe that such a program was the right thing to do, under any circumstances? Now, I know that this story has been written to death, but I can’t let go. (READ MICHAEL SMERCONISH COLUMN IN SUNDAY INKY PLEASE!)

I can’t let go of the fact that educators , the people we trust to teach our kids, could not realize that a potential for spying and all kinds of irregularities was clear. The danger was clear. The potential was great. I’m sure no one wanted to become spy-masters, but they have sullied the reputation of one of the finest school districts in the nation. This is something you would expect in a big brother state. not in the USA.

Forget the court action. That’s just a sideshow. The taxpayers and parents of Lower Merion should seek what the professional educators seek. . The Lower Merion school administration needs some common sense remedial action.

ARLEN AND JOE

We always knew it would get nasty, but not this early. The flap over Joe Sestak’s military service and congressional attendance is only the beginning. I couldn’t think of a more interesting contest. Arlen Specter, who has survived everything from cancer to his former Republicans, is fighting to win the Democratic nomination against a feisty and quite outspoken Joe Sestak. It could be close. Then again, the way it started this past week, could be the harbinger of nastier things to come. Joe Sestak has already accused Arlen Specter of “swiftboating” him. Specter demands that Sestak remove images of himself in uniform, citing Pentagon policy. They both have millions to spend. It’s will be a brawl to the end. Frankly, I like it. Primaries can be grim and boring affairs. I think this contest may get prompt some voters to actually show up.

As I sit here at Wilmington Station I am amazed by Larry’s posts. For someone that moves about the speed of molten lava he fails to put enough thought into his topics. He has Icelandic ash floating between his 2 ears. He is both preoccupied and paralyzed to think clearly and develop a cogent thought and transfer thoughts to words on the keyboard. I have one word for you Mr Teleprompter Reader: delegate.
Only the most looney liberal like Larry would still be talking about Spygate in Lower Merion (or Spygate between the Patriots and Jets for that matter). It is such a nonstory that this reeks Larry scrambling around on his return trip from jolly old England sifting through old posts searching for a topic he hasn’t vent on recently to reemerge.
Assuming that this did go down as he says and we know he is a man of his word. Who in England would have read a local Philly story about alledged spying on students? It didn’t even make the national news with fellow teleprompter readers Gibson, Williams and the diminuative one Couric. How did this nonstory travel across the Atlantic? Waiffed across the ocean on Islandic ash or as a note in a bottles that washed up in Dover? Not likely. Could it have been an expatriated American working in London that reads Larry’s blog to keep up on local events in Philly? I’ll go with the note in the bottle. Better likelihood. Larry did that person have a volleyball named Wilson?
This is not intentional spying. This is a byproduct of some software salesperson overselling the Lower Merion School District on a software package they did not want or need. They bought capabilities that even their IT geniuses weren’t aware of or couldn’t figure out if their lives (or jobs) depended on it. This is laughable. This is not an invasion of privacy issue. Get a life Larry. Maybe you should stick to free air.
How about Sharon Osborne getting voted off Celebrity Apprentice last night? You gotta love Bret Michaels and his whacked out bandana style. Tour bus thrust will be the word of the day in DC. It will be modified to Campaign Bus Thrust. Those whacky candidates and their roadies!

“The more I think about it, the madder I get.” I like this. It is familiar to me. You believe you’re “thinking” about something, but your reaction shows you’re clearly not engaging in any rational practice. You’re really having a visceral reaction that doesn’t really involve your brain, or at least not your capacity to reason. I’m familiar with this because it’s what many of my Tea Party Express Patriot Revolutionary buddies do. You get less than all the facts, tune into Fox or Rush, let them whip you into a frothy rabid lather, and then misspell some words on signs and take to the streets with a militant attitude. It’s so much fun.

I like the webcam idea. It’s a lot like my new favorite immigration legislation in Arizona. You just need some kind of suspicion of someone and you can disregard the Fourth Amendment entirely! Now that’s the way to get law enforcement done. This kid’s parents are creeps, and the kid was probably up to illegal activity. The school district was right to snap photos to make sure he wasn’t doing something criminal. Forget his rights: he looks like a criminal. That’s the answer. Just like in Arizona.

Larry, technology grows too fast for the law to catch up with it. Webcams on laptops can be used to take pictures, intent left to the imagaination of the users.

There is no expectatiojn of privacy when you use an employer provided or school provided laptop. They have the right to make sure it is properly used. They have the right to take steps to ensure they can recover lost of stolen laptops. GPS can lead police to locations where a stolen laptop is in use.

Larry, if you consider mud slinging good political theater, why not just stay in Britain the next time you’re there. Citizens have a hard enough time trying to pick a decent representative without name calling and false accusations that don’t amount to a hill of beans. The web cam incident makes you sick yet Specter and his unmitigated gall in trying to remain elected only infuses in you great admiration for the man. Word up Larry. It’s people like Specter who make us sick to our stomachs. The people have had enough of lifetime politicians whose only care in life is to get reelected.

Larry I drove by a group of people the other day standing in front of some cameras. My first thought was that this must be a Tea Party protest. Upon closer inspection I realized it was Joe Sestak commercial being shot. I should have known right away it wasn’t Tea Partiers. The signs they were holding were spelled correctly……… unfortunately they displayed them upside down.

  9. Ed
    April 26th, 2010 | 11:34 am

Come to think of it where does one find 30 to 40 people on a Friday afternoon who have nothing better to do than stand in a commercial for a Democrat? That should have been the first tell-tale sign that they weren’t in the Tea Party. People involved with the Tea Party were at work, paying taxes and protecting their families.

What ostriches these commenters be! I live in the mid-west and follow this story avidly, as do others all around the globe. Techies all over the country, in particular, have analyzed and discussed the technical aspects of this case in huge detail! This story has been all over the web since its inception and it has captured a great deal of attention all over the world. The only criticisms I have of this story is 1) Mr. Kane set his sights to low. The FIRST line of responsibility is the school board. The board should have been on top of the laptop program, which most reports fail to note that these laptops were REQUIRED, no personal laptops were allowed in school (they would be confiscated) and that the only way to access the district web were all the assignments, materials and discussions resided was through the mandatory laptop. Did the board make an effort prior to the laptops being issued, to determine what software would be loaded and what anti-theft measures were in place? Not that I can tell. Early on it was reported that IT personnel reported the recovery of some stolen laptops; it was further reported that not one board member asked any questions about how it was accomplished. IMO, the board had an obligation to find out about these things and to establish policies about privacy, scope of authority, etc., consequences for violations, and to ensure that procedures were developed to implement the policy. Only the board of ed may enact policy for the district! The board of ed was egregiously remiss and failed to discharge its fundamental duty.
    2) This story is also important because it marks the first breaking of public perception – or realization, depending on one’s experience – that school personnel, and in particular administrators, are no better than the rest of us, and there are some people who work for schools and school districts who are deliberately up to no good. One can no more assume their intentions are benign than one can assume they are malicious. Innocent until proven guilty, yes, but deserving of no more slack than anyone else.

Marie a few unauthorized pictures taken in the privacy of one’s own bedroom is the least of our problems. Big brother is already here. The school had the capacity to trace all the web sites visited by their students, and this was public information known to all. Secondly you can’t walk down the street without a camera pointed your way, let alone store cams and intersection cams. Mobile phones can track a persons whereabouts. Credit cards can do the same. Big Brother can use all this information to their advantage. I was once approached by a person who held copies of all the phone bills in the tristate area. He was willing to sell me copies of the phone bills. That kind of information could be used in many ways. I have been told we live in the “Information Age” and this information private as it may seem is available to those corrupt enough to use it for their own ends.

All day trying to defend their short sell business. Net short income was the war cry of the day. Bottom line is, these sleazebags knew what they were doing and deserve all the criticism in the world. Watching the Goldman Sachs legal team on Capital Hill reminded me of the day the 5 baseball players testified on sterriod use in MLB. The difference is you basically liked McGwire, Palmeiro, etc before they testified. Not so much with the weasels from GS. Time would prove several of the high profile players to be lying under oath. Public opinion turned on them. Nothing ever came of that dog and pony show. I suspect that nothing will come of the GS dog and pony show either. It is all a diversion. An illusion created by Barack Copperfield to have you believe he is working for the little guy. Rubbish. It’s nothing more than a shallow ruise designed to divert attention from our real problems. Millions of Americans that want to work are out of work. That is different from the millions of Americans and illegals playing the system because they don’t want to work. This is the legacy Barry will leave with in 2012. He came in as the economy was disintegrating and it completely melted down during his watch. China Syndrome. He did nothing but window dressing to fix the economy, housing market or unemployment situation. He threw trillions of good dollars after bad. He wasted 4 years in office. What a tool!
Tea Bag Patriot keep up the nonsensical rhetoric. You make about much sense as Barack and his minions. Stick your head in the sand and ignore the fact that Congress and this President are completely ineffective and incompetent. We need fundamental change in the way we do business. It will never happen as long as Byrd, McCain, Liebermann, Reid, Pelosi and the rest of the career politicians are on the hill. We need sweeping change and term limits. This was never meant to be a career. Our founding fathers are turning over in their graves when the likes of Ted Kennedy has to die to be voted out of office. One 4 year term and done. No reelection. No pension. No endless campaigning and fund raising. 4 and done!
That applies to Beau Biden too if he ever gets the stones to run.
Arlen Specter and Joe Sestak. 2 names out of the past fighting for a seat in the future. Their checkered pasts should work against them. Instead their name recognition works for them. What is wrong with this system? Too many Americans are too busy or too lazy or too disinterested in the political system to take 30 minutes to understand the candidates and their positions. Sad. Very sad. So PA gets another career politician in Washington. Do tell.
Do you really believe that fat Andy Reid still has his job? Do you really believe he will lead your Eagles into battle with Kevin Kolb as QB? Is the specter of Michael Vick looming over Kolb to produce immediately? Will they be 2-3 before they figure it all out in October. There must be another shoe to drop. This can’t be it.

They’re going to shoot firearms at targets that represent “liberal ideas.” I am giddy at the prospect of using my 30-06 to shoot live ammunition at socilist czar Barack Obama! Live ammunition and politics are a natural combination as we Tea Partiers know from our rallies around D.C. with firearms and appearances at Obama functions with firearms. Ed, you simply have no idea what you are talking about or how Wall Street manages risk, and I’d never deign to explain it to an idiot.

Had Goldman blown up the congressional iquiry would have been, “if you guys are so smart why didn’t you hedge and balance your book of risk exposure?” All firms that survived the crisis enganged in hedging by laying off risk, its either shorts or outright sales. For every seller there is a willing buyer in order for the market to clear. The insitutial buyers of subprime were sophisticated and they thought the correction in the marekt at that time represented compelling value, and at that moment in ’07 their long purchase of subprime CDS was cheap versus where they could have bought subprime CDS exposure prior to that time. At one point in ’06, subprime was trading only 15 basis points cheap to Agency MBS. At time of trade in ’07 it looked very cheap to ’06, and thats why European banks went long. Just turns out it got a hell of a lot cheaper. All of information about underlying mortgages was available to both sides of transaction. Some professional money managers dont do homework, are lazy or are misinformed. There is a sucker born every minute, thank God!

  30. Ed
    April 28th, 2010 | 5:46 pm

Pussy are you as dumb as you sound? Goldman went long and realized they were heading for disaster. They risked their entire revenue on the “new” product they had to sell. Even though they knew that they were already betting against it. If that doesn’t call for new rules in the market place then you are the idiot.

Goldman should have been asking them why they allowed FHLMC and FNMA to run amuck, that was the benchmark that allowed for the proliferation of subprime market. Those two agencies were the root of the housing debacle, yet congress wants to attack firms who survived and are not a burden to taxpayers. When the federal government fails to enact responsible legislature to address the real problems of our time (not healthcare or global warming) then the states jump in with onesided clouded approaches. Shouldn’t leave big decisions to the kids. Barack needs all the illegals to get re-elected in 2012. If he comes down on illegals he stands to lose. If he does nothing he stands to lose. He was hoping he could ignore this tinderbox. No longer Barack. Man up you tool. Oh and what about the economy? Back burner again? Tool!

Dr Jill isn’t too happy about it but once she got a remote she started warming up to the idea.

Fish-After watching the Habs in the last three games I won’t use the word cakewalk.I think the Pens will win but Montreal will make them work.By the way, that series went a long way toward proving that Crosby is better than Ovechkin.

    Larry,

I am glad you got home safely. The first mistake Lower Merion did was to actually allow students to bring Township laptops home. Kids, adults or whoever…..you do not give free candy out and expect someone not to abuse what is not theirs. Especially Kids who have computer of their own.

Like all campaigns, things get very dirty. But I wanted to inform you on the republican side, Toomy is not running uncontended. Republican candidate Peg Luksik is running and not geting much airtime or press.

On note on state issues, here we are with an upcoming budget that will be going to the senate with another deficit to close and raising taxes somewere, but no cuts on deals and perks.

VP Joe, in England they’re still all abuzz over the webcam controversy in Lower Merion. I’m on assignment right now so I will have to delay that rendezvous with Pussy. Pussy if you’re out there i still don’t get it when it comes to Goldman. I’m not a playah. All I know is that they wrapped up a product sold it to their customers, and out the back door they contacted their bookie and placed a huge bet on the product that they sold out the front door to fail. Is that anywhere near what happened?

  54. Pussy Foot
    April 29th, 2010 | 6:03 pm

Not quite what happened Ed, but thats what Congress wants the public to beleive. Many sophisticated spectulators thought that when subprime MBS cheapened from around par to $80 cents on the dollar that the housing market correction was more than fully discounted, and smart institutional investors got long on the first leg down thinking it was a bargin. In the end the following legs down were in the $0 -$20 level depending on quality, these prices occured at peak of crisis. Goldman, Lehman and others never dreamed it would get that bad, but Paulson and a few other hedge funds did. Had Goldman sold this stuff to Mom and Pop I would see the conflict, but it was all big boys and girls who always like to think they are the smartest person in the room.

The SEC has created a paper tiger to fight to take everyone’s eye off their real failings, missing all the Ponzi schemes and other real abuses.

TGIF! Another Spring week bites the dust. Another week closer to Summer Recess. Another week closer to my beloved weekends in Rehoboth. Another week closer to checking out those little hunnies getting pink in bikinis on the beach by day and slamming Kamakazes at the Parrott by night. I have a new pair of binoculars for the former and drawer full of drugs for the latter.
Pussy Foot your sister Pussy Willow is blooming in my yard.
We may all disagree on the specifics of the alledged Goldman Sachs scheme but I think we all agree that it is just a diversion from the failures of this Administration and Congress. 15 months in and there is no excuse for blaming George W Bush anymore. He has disappeared faster than a Texas tornado.
Even the ubiquitous Sarah Palin has never been to Washington or Wall Street or even a bank most likely. She does have our back watching the Ruskies from her back porch. I wish I had porked Sarah. That is one missed opp. After I creamed her in the debate she would not be having any of my hairplugged extracirricular activities. There is always Dr Jill.
Another big weekend planned. Breakfast at Maggies. Demo at Home Depot. Golf at Rehoboth Beach CC. Dinner TBD.
Can’t wait for the Obamas to go on another boondoggle trip. I like being the big guy in DC. Special treatment. Special Secret Service details. Special hiding places. Very Tom Clancy-esque.
As I get ready to load on the 7:01 one wonders why they call it the 7:01 when it never arrives before 7:20. One also wonders why Larry’s website never adjusts for daylight savings time.

Barry, 3.2% economic growth for the quarter. That’s not too shabby. Even after Bush had seven years of experience, he couldn’t match that.

Sure i wanted to cut the nuts off of Obama. He’s an Uncle Ted. Uncle Ted held a great amount of guilt. That guilt was only because he killed some poor woman because he was a drunken idiot. Me? I screwed around on my wife and had babies out of wedlock. Some would say I’m a typical Negro (as Harry Reid would say). Truth is I am a typical Negro.

Jesse, there was a time that admired you like Reverend Wright. Then you had to get all crazy and racist. You extort the white man for feeling guilty about what his great grandfather did over 150 years ago. You know I’m half white. I’m not sure if I should hate or love you, man.

Alas Saturday has finally arrived.Breakfast at Maggies. Demo on rug installation at Home Depot. Round of golf at Rehoboth CC. Shoot back to Wilmington to Champps to watch the Kentucky Derby and grab The Havana.A cuban sandwich to die for. Dr Jill gets the Spicy Buffalo Wrap. That’s because she is a saucy wench I suppose. I got my money on Paddy O’ Prado. Going off at 20-1 I stand to make a tidy sum my friends. Post time is 6:28. Can’t miss the Derby. Dr Jill will be wearing a big hat. Some year I should take her to Churchill Downs.
Fish I think the Flyers luck is about to run out of steam.
Halladay and 4 days of rain.
Tiger bad things happen to bad people. Think about it.
Jesse you are one revolting individual he is. He makes my skin crawl.
I was talking to Tony Blair the other day. He said that he was not aware of the so called Lower Merion incident and he works for CNN now. So much for England being abuzz over the incident. Just some parents looking to cash in on the government.
What to do tomorrow? Any suggestions? I have an invite to a Polo Match in Georgetown but I’m looking for something fun and wacky to do. I need your help. Is there a Tea Party Rally anywhere in the Delaware Valley.
Hey Larry change this stupid topic please. No one has even mentioned Lower Merion in days until I did earlier this AM.
