FIRST HUNDRED DAYS -IRAQ ATTACK? – FLYERS FEVER
ANALYSIS PARALYSIS–
Don’t buy all the analysis of the first 100 days of Barack Obama. It’s the next 100 days that really count. That’s when we find out out if all the dynamics of the new White House result in real change. There is one aspect of President Obama’s leadership that can be judged right now. He acts fast on breaking news. Evidence: reaction to Swine flu, natural disasters. His leadership is fast and furious, and exciting. Sometimes fast can be risky, as evidenced by the flip-flopping on the torture controversy.
As we speak, the pundits are busy doing a shrink job on Obama’s style. We know the style. One thing is certain -most polls show about 49 percent of the people think America is going in the right direction, compared to 17 percent six months ago. For that we are thankful.
IRAQ ATTACK
With friends like these, who needs enemies. The Maliki regime in Iraq refuses to form a real coalition government. Maliki blasts the U.S. for controversial military activity. That’s okay . But it seems like the Iraqi government is pushing for an earlier exit. Is all this their way of saying thank you?
And if we leave, who will protect Iraq? Iran??
FLYERS
I am, by nature an optimist. If you read some of the analysis of the Flyer’s early exit from the playoffs, you would feed into that sorry old line that Philadelphia teams are doomed. Give me a break! We just won a World Series! Our football team was a win away from Super. Our hockey and basketball teams made the playoffs. The negativators (there is no such word) should start thanking their lucky stars that there is so much excitement going on in this town! Gimme a break! Flyers had a great season. Period. If you read some of the obits, you would thank that all is lost. Can we appreciate anything in this town?
SORRY ABOUT THE LETTERS
Some have suggested that multi-fatality accidents are not news. Obviously, they have never been in one. When people die on the highways, it is important news. My apologies about some of the responses to this site. There are some great writers. And there are those who don’t have a clue. But we all live and learn.

Larry, five people getting killed on the NJ Turnpike is news. It is also a topic that I feel needs further discourse. How many tractor trailer accidents have occurred on our highways? Too many if you ask me. That’s the type of talking point that needs to be discussed. If we can slow down these behemoths so that they are not a danger to regular drivers, i would be very happy.
I did watch the Flyers yesterday. Did you? It was the second time this year that I tuned into one of their games. Am I a fan? Only for a moment.
(Out of distress mode for 48 hours)
Larry, President Obama’s rating is still high with those that elected him and the Fourth Estate lapdance continues. A large majority of the population is growing uneasy with the new president’s agenda. This was witnessed by the Tea Parties (that you and the lapdance press dismiss). It is clear that he is trying to force his socialistic agenda on America in a ‘time of need’ (much like the the previous Administration’s Patriot Act in a ‘time of terror’). Pushing Universal Healthcare as part of a solution to the economic crisis? Healthcare has nothing to do with economic recovery. Then there are the ‘feel good’ vindictive measures. Quick let’s shutdown Gitmo. Release the terrorist for another attack and punish members of the Bush Administration for torture. If you don’t have the stones for torture, you shouldn’t be president. Opening dialogue with terrorist regimes only serves to strengthen them and give them credibility. The notion that we can get everyone in the world to ‘like and respect’ us again is ludicrous. That ship has sailed. All the foreign aid in the world won’t bring that back. The pirates almost got away with the Alabama insident because Obie was reluctant to pull the trigger. Forcing Waggoner out of GM. Where is the precedent for that? Will Obie now decide who gets to run America’s largest companies. Will those positions soon be presidential appointments?
First 100 days – lots of arm waving – smoke and mirrors – socialistic agenda being implemented. Growing unrest in middle America and not just the right wing nutjobs. Obie promised to help the middle class so far, not so much.
Next 100 days will be telling. Obie is so naive in the ways of Washington and the World. I think short of his clear socialistic agenda, his heart is in the right place. He’s following the advice of people that are more interested in their own agendas, however (sound familar?). George Soros’ campaign to discredit the Bush Administration. Awful.
Good luck with helping to fix the economy. Good luck with rebuilding America’s infrastructure. Set the partisan politics aside, as you promised you would. Let’s build an America we can all be proud of.
Accidents on the New Jersey Turnpike, regardless how horrendous, are not news. They are regretable and bring us grief but not news worthy. They are accidents. Just like people slow down as they pass a horrific accident on the side of the road to get a better glimpse, the press prays on our basic instincts. The scene of a burning car drwas us in. Sick. Shame on the press. Shame on you, Larry.
Larry,
I’m still in distress mode because someone is using my name to attack George.
I don’t think highway fatalities are generally news. Tens of thousands of people are killed or injured on the road each year in this country.
Swine flu. The media is getting out of control with the fear-mongering here. Instead of simple factual reports, there is all kinds of speculation about whether this is the bug that will wipe out humanity. Or at least that’s the tone of it. Why don’t they just advise people to follow basic rules of personal hygiene?
The Flyers’ loss on Saturday was a disappointment. They’ve got a strong team, and they should have done better. I’m not a boo-bird, but I can see why it’s frustrating to lose to a Pittsburgh team featuring Cindy Crosby. The Flyers should follow the Pittsburgh model for building a team at low cost: just suck for several years in a row so you can get high draft picks year after year.
As far as the Flyers go, we were spoiled in the early years. They were so good and so entertaining that we still go to Rexy’s. Unfortunately what made them great in the 70′s is what holds them back today, Bobby Clarke. Great player, bad GM. The game has changed. Look at the Bruins. They got rid of Harry Sinden, their last bastion to the 70′s. GM Peter Chiarelli (sp?) has transformed the team in 2 years to a skating team with skilled players from the dump and chase muckers of the previous regime. Result – best team in East. Swept Montreal. Waiting for next victum. Prior to this year, they were built to get to the playoffs but not get out of the 2nd round. Sound familiar?
victim
YFAP, do you think Larry is sending you a olive branch with his Flyers’ reference? Or is he just a casual fan trying to sound relevant?
You can see from my cavalier attitude concerning censorship that literally anything goes on this site. If you are a classless moron you are entitled to express your opinion regardless of how offensive it might be. I’ll just keep looking the other way. Live and learn is what I say. If your feelings are hurt tough. I am the main target here and you don’t hear me complaining do you?
Wow, Larry. We didn’t even get to ten posts before a sock puppet showed up.
While sock puppets can be needed comic relief when the blog topic gets to be five or six days old, this rapid appearance is scandalous. It makes me question my belief in FREE AIR. By the way, I was riding my bike last weekend and I noticed that both of my neighborhood stations are now offering air for FREE. However, they still insist on charging slightly different prices for gasoline. Can we get Josh Shapiro on that? Speaking of Josh, I heard him on WHYY’s Radio Times recently championing a statewide ban on handheld cell phones while driving. This is just the kind of drivel do-nothing legislation we can expect from him. It’s not hand held phones that increase accidents: it’s people having conversations on telephones and not paying attention to their driving. Otherwise you’d outlaw things like eating while driving. Josh also wants to preempt the stricter fines under the ordinance Philadelphia seeks to put into place. Way to go, Josh. Will he ever pass politically risky, meaningful legislation? No.
Larry,i have to give Obama first 100 days a passing grade,he is doing better than i thought, however as a big Hillary fan i still think Hillary would be the best person for the job.
Obama is smooth and looks like the world leaders have taken to him a lot better then bush,as far as the first dog i thought obama was taking a rescued dog not a blue blood from the kennedys.
ofcourse everyone would agree, anyone would look good after following gw bush…..
as far as accidents on the roads i was hit twice (in the early 80′s)while biking on my Schwinn Letour bikes, once by a drunk driver that never stopped after hitting me (harb.& blvd.),he was caught a couple miles away as he was followed by a witness of the crime,it also got me a free ride to the hospital by ems,the bike was totaled..good people came out of there cars to help me..the story was on action news that evening….
Larry, there’s nothing like riding a bike
it makes you feel young,,it’s like playing kick the can,,but i do it in the park these days the streets are to risky a lot of the drivers are doing everything but concentrating on driving…….
The most important thing that Barrack did in his first 100 days was select me to be the face of America. I can fix the United States’ world relations problems. I’ll regain our national glory abroad and then you can focus me on solving domestic issues. I can forward the Healthcare initiative. I have the experience. I can solve the economic woes in 30 days given the chance.
I suspect Larry is a casual fan who likes to see the local teams win. Boston might be good but they got a break when Philly lost & i think Carolina played them well too, they could have trouble getting out of the east & besides, can anyone beat Detroit ?
No question Iran will protect Iraq, the mullahs are probably spending the oil money already.
I guess I’m having short term memory loss because i can’t recall which natural disaster Obama has faced.”Fast, furious, exciting,” I’m speechless.
YBP, the volcano that “Bobby” Jindal didn’t want to monitor in Alaska. Obama told it to stop erupting, and it stopped.
You can see me soon on television infomercials. I will be the face of the ThighMaster. They are giving that two bit blonde Suzanne Somers the boot. I’ll be crunching those inches away on a 30 minute infomercial starting in May.
I can react quickly to a crisis too. I can be fast, furious and exciting too. Don’t forget about me.
I remember when I was a little girl in Park Ridge I use to ride my Raleigh Cupcake bike with the handlebar tassles and without training wheels. When I visited my Grandfather in Northeast Pennsylvania in the summers he taught me to shot squirrels with a rifle while riding through the woods. I was quite the shot.
Larry, I refuse to believe that Hillary Clinton is posting on your blog.
I’ve been listening to The Blasters today. Larry, I think you should write more about American music, not about those English has beens. And I’m talking music here, not the kind of mass-produced rot we get from the American Idol crowd and the usual bland hip-hop R&B junk like Jay-Z and Beyonce or crud commercial country like Brooks & Dunn. I’m talking some real Americana. Don’t let us down, Larry.
Larry I’m beginning to think that you don’t like me. All of the garbage written in the previous column and you reference the line I wrote about the fatal accident on the turnpike. I assume it was me you were referring to. It was the only entry written that brought up the subject. That is pretty lame Larry.
If you read the entry, I was only predicting what your new subject matter might have been for this new column. Give me a break Larry and learn to read. Read and learn Larry read and learn…..
Ed I’m the one with the complex here. My good friend Barry is getting all the credit when I’m doing all the heavy lifting. You are worried about Larry Kane dissing you? From what I’ve read I’d be more concerned about Larry Kaighn disrespecting you. He’s the real journalist here.
Leo why are you surprised to see me blogging here? There have been many notables blogging here. Some are dead. Others imaginary characters. Can I interest you in a ThighMaster? Every ThighMaster I sell brings us closer to full economic recovery. And when did you become the Good Music Police? I bet you can’t even load and Ipod.
Hillary, I’ve already hurt Larry Kaighn’s feelings. I asked him to quit reporting from Boca. I think I called his reports nauseating. Now that he is giving us little anecdotes about his life, he is, as Kenny Bania says, giving us “pure gold Larry pure gold”
Larry, thanks for the accolades, now if you just clamp down on disruptive posters you’ll have a reasonable discussion going on here, somthing you can invite your friends and collegues to read without being embarrassed. Most of us really like you, we know your’e a decent guy, just a little misguided sometimes.
Jack, Obama gets more than a passing grade in my view, more like a B+, but its nice to see you put partisanship aside and give him some credit. I thought a Teddy Kennedy thorough bred was a mistake too. Michelle has already said it was crazy. Probably inbred much like the Kennedy’s, the dog’s mother may have even been raped by a close relative, making it too high strung like many inbred pedigrees. I did notice that he chose a black and white colored dog, a rich irony that only someone like me would notice. It’s nice to see how happy the girls are with it, hoopfully it doesnt get sick or turn on them in a Kennedy-esque way.
It’s sad the Iraqis are not more appreciative, we really have to stay there like we did in Korea, but in a much lower profile, but Obama is smart enough to do that.
People should start wearing surgical masks around the city with “Swine” written on it to raise awareness and spark irrational fear, its also a great way to raise sales of drug store items and to look a little crazy. I might do it to get on the news so you guys can see what I look like, I know you’re curious- hopefully not bi-curious!
Enjoy the great weather and improving economy. As Chauncy Garder said in “Being There” with regard to the economy, “in the spring there will be growth”
Hey Leo, how about the “Dropkick Murphys” for some good new sound- can we agree on that? Or the Flobots, my guess is you know them and like them.
Larry, your nose….. I never knew you were so sensitive about the size of your honker. To me you were the perfect specimen for a ’70′s news anchor. Why you offered it up that when on air you wouldn’t turn to the side in fear of having that big profile on the screen simply amazes me. Live and learn I guess……
gee Ed, even I winced at the above, but I guess its something Larry said. In todays ere of telegenic faces Larry probably would be limited to radio, add in his height and he might not even be given his first break. Same with woman, the quality of woman on TV has gone through the roof, smart and homley just doesnt cut it. That ugly Scottish woman on British idol who can sing really uderscores how biased society has become with repspect to looks.
How about that miss california who doesnt like the gay mariage, her looks couldnt overcome political correctness. You gotta respect her for standing on her view and not pandering to judges- RESPECT
George, height has no factor in becoming a news anchor unless you consider all news anchors are 5 foot something. On air they are all six foot six sitting in their chairs.
BTW, Larry for your information Melissa Rivers got the ax last night on Trump’s show “Your Fired”. Mama Rivers was so upset she walked off the show (I hope)
never to return. Ba Bam! Two wicked woman with one “your fired”…… How good is that?
Yea Ed height is something easily overcome on TV. I guess my point is that a guy who looks like LArry in his 20s nowadays would not even get an interview, since if your that short and not handsome you never get through the first filter or two in 21st century media outlets, even if your as tenacious and smart as our man Kane.
George, I’ve seen Larry at Radnor Valley Country Club. It was from afar but he was bigger than those around him. He was all set to play a set of tennis. Decked out in his all white outfit he was the perfect example of a Bushwood Judge Smailes exmple of a proper member. I left before he hit his first serve….
I had loop to do.
George-I’m going to look for a mask to wear while I ride my bike to work.I’ll get a blue one,it will contrast nicely with my green bike,I always did like the Canucks original colors.
Larry,
Should I wear a surgical mask on SEPTA? I haven’t seen anyone wearing one yet. Do you think I would cause a panic if I started? Is SEPTA taking precautions to prevent the spread of swine flu?
Reports of my demise have been grossly exaggerated. I am wearing a blue mask however.
I wonder if president Obama is going to have his Air Force 1 747 replica do a low fly over of center city Philadelphia today. That should really stimulate the citizens.
Philbert,
I doubt that is really you. I’ve never seen you use a computer in all the times I’ve waited by your side for a champion of FREE AIR to appear.
I learned on the morning news that surgical masks ultimately (after about 3 hours) become saturated with germs and viruses and should be discarded. Why should I want to trap so many germs and viruses so close to my breathing holes? I’m really torn over this mask stuff. Should I get a biosuit? Given the state of some of the El seats I’ve seen lately, a biosuit might be in order.
Larry, any opinions? Have you seen anyone on the Regional Rail wearing masks?
Also, if I wear a mask on SEPTA, do you think someone will think I’m Jesse James, come to rob the train? Is the wearing of masks in public a threat to public safety? I know the Lone Ranger had one, but that was a little different — he also shot people with silver bullets.
There is nothing to fear but the fear of thousands of Mexicans coming north to pick vegetables and fruits in this country……..achoo….achooo….
oeL what would you steal on SEPTA? Popeye’s Fried Chicken? Transfer tokens? Discarded newspapers? Empty water bottles? Human waste?
I miss you by me at RMT. No one else talks to me.
There is nothing to fear but fear itself. Maybe some self absorbed NFL football players with endzone props.
Wearing masks……..how do I put this delicately? If you were a passenger on the Titanic and all the life boats were gone, I wouldn’t worry about putting on your life jacket. Same thing if you were a passenger on a SEPTA train, if you didn’t take a shower that morning don’t worry no one will notice….even if you did take a shower, eventually no one would notice. Just ask Larry Kane.
Alive and well from Cancun. Guys should I bail on my timeshare this week and fly home? Are they getting close to quarantining? YAP, what are you hearing?
Larry,
How about that Senator Specter? The GOP has left no room for moderates. It’ll be interesting to see whether their Palin wing can regain control of the Senate when they run against moderate Dems.
Larry Kaighn-s’erehT a nosaer i diova ocixeM.
Larry,
I think Senator Specter’s announcement will cause Josh Shapiro to cry tiny sick tears. He doesn’t have a path to a Senate seat anymore. What will he do? Is this the end for your golden boy?
oeL I miss you. Please come back to me. It’s lonely here at the RMT.
I’m doing fine thank you very much. I have a very nice career path in law and politics. The nitwit shut-ins on this website are the real losers. Time to leave your parent’s basement and get some sunlight.
Thank you for the underwhelming response guys. Now I know how the real Larry feels. Te Mrs and I are going to ride out the week and hope for the best. I’m just about out of clean knee high black socks. Can someone overnight a couple pair to me? I got it workin here with the sombrero, tank top, cargo shorts, black knee highs and sandals. Takin Cancun by storm.
Hey Josh thanks for droppin in.
Snarlin Arlin turns his coat, good ridence! What a snake, he was always a democrat uncomfortable in republican cloths, so its great to see he finally found himself. Poor Josh Shapiro, I hope Larry is there to comfort him. Now with Al Frankin they will have their 60 seats, so open up your wallets and ease your sphincter, hard working taxpayers are really going to get screwed by this new majority.
Eric Cantor is the great conservative hope to turn the tide back in 2010. He’s up to the task, now if Larry Kane could just figure out who this critcal new age conservative is. Larry might even someday write about Cantor and actually promote a cutting edge political opinion. News Flash Larry!!!
Josh, for a politician you sure are far from being a diplomat. You have to act more like Larry. Get a thick skin and only say something once a week. That way even if you do say something stupid people move on, quite fast.
As far as Arlen Specter, I always knew he was a Democrat wearing a blue pinstriped suit. A phony baloney from the get go. It’s no wonder that Ed Rendell followed his rise to higher office. Say one thing, and do whatever the polls dictate. The polls the polls the polls. These type of characters survive by the polls. Like a flag in the wind thy will turn in which ever direction the wind is blowing. Specter knows he can’t beat Toomey so he jumps ship and will meet him in the general election. Lets see if this survivor can really survive.
Hey Larry did you like “will the survivor survive” reference?
Ed, that was pure gold, pure gold Ed….
I just wish Larry Kaighn would come up with a line like that. As much as he has to say I wonder if he really should be concentrating on his past experiences as opposed to coming up with some new hip blockbuster line like his famous “but the big story tonight is….”
The jack ass of all jack asses has spoke up, his opinion is that Arlen Specter is an asset to the Democratic party. Guess who the jackass is, it’s Ed Rendell….
the biggest jackass that ever was. He has sold us down the river with gambling and he now backs a real loser in Arlen Specter. I hope they both end up on Donald Trump’s show…… “You’re Fired”
Leo, stick your sock puppets up your ass.
