Harry Kalas, A Voice For the Ages

When Harry Kalas arrived here at the turn of the decades from the sixties to the seventies, he was a newcomer to a Phillie’s broadcast staff that was fixed in place, and led by By Saam, then a legend in his own right. Harry’s melodic style was different – he represented a more contemporary and conversational play-by-play man. His voice was daunting -a deep and powerful voice that, in a matter of a few years, began to represent  baseball broadcasting at its finest. His was a VOICE FOR THE AGES, and neary two generations of Phillie’s fans, spanning over four decades of Philadelphia life appreciated his enthusiasm, decorum, and respect for the game.

As a broadcaster who has seen anchors come and go so fast that it’s impossible to recall all the names, I have a respect for those who can endure. And there are two factors that make them successful – knowledge and consistency. That’s what makes Vin Scully of the LA Dodgers such a spectacular broadcaster. There have been no more consistent baseball broadcasters in America than Harry Kalas and Vin Scully.

To this reporter, listening to Kalas on radio is like watching it without visuals. His voice brought the imagery to the listener. But most of all, Harry Kalas, was baseball in Philadelphia.

It is only fitting that he was around to give us the play by play of the World Series, his second victory in 29 years.

The void left by his passing will be huge. Frankly, it is hard to imagine the Phillies without Kalas, and Philadelphia without him. Like Gene Hart, with the Flyers, the vacuum will be there until we find the next big play by play star. It will take years for that person to achieve what Harry did in less than a decade , culminating with his classic World Series brodcasts in 1980.

As I said, his was  a voice for the ages.

My great uncle used to do radio broadcasts for MLB teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers. It’s quite a group that follows the teams around to bring the action to fans over the radio airwaves. It is too bad that Harry passed so suddenly and young. 73. Wow. I’ll miss him the way I miss Ernie Harwell from Detroit’s radio. Great voices of summer.

Larry, you being in the voice business would or do know that Harry’s voice was an acquired delight. When fans realized that he was the real deal, the voice became not only his trademark but the auditory trademark of the Phillies. Unlike many glib and sophisticated professional voices that are soon forgotten, Harry’s voice was one of a kind.

I only set foot in Philly once and that was 20 years ago. Yet, I still remember the smell of the cheesesteak and the voice of Harry Kalas on Prism network doing the Phillies games. Philly has lost all of its legends now. John Facenda, Hy Lit and now Harry Kalas. I feel sorry for you guys in Philly now.

Larry, thanks for your tribute to Harry. All Phillies fans feel his loss tonight. One item you may want to know is that Harry did not broadcast the 1980 World Series because of an MLB rule, changed a few years later, that prevented local broadcasters from covering WS games. The broadcast record that we have of Harry in 1980 was recorded later.

Not only a great sportscaster but a great person. The voice of the Phillies for 30 years. He, like John Facenda, transcended Philadelphia as the voice of NFL Films. This is a huge loss. Harry is smiling somewhere because his Phils were World Champs last season. Good bless you, Harry.
Larry, we did not miss the quick blog topic change. A big pat on the head to you. Hopefully a famous figure won’t have to die daily to get you to change topics more often…

My fiance and I were discussing our upcoming honeymoon trip to England when we came across news of Mr. Kalas’ passing. She couldn’t understand my sudden shout and sadness, but how could you explain the special relationship anyone who lived in Philadelphia had with Harry’s voice on TV and especially on radio?

In the late 80’s I worked the night shift at TV Guide, a lonely job following some of the worst Phillies teams ever assembled. Only Harry and, of course, Richie Ashburn, kept me sane those long summer nights. A few years later I had the pleasure of meeting him as he traveled to Tampa to Ray Shore’s funeral. May God bless the Kalas family — God has reunited Harry, Whitey, and By Saam in the biggest broadcast booth of all.

Leo, I remember when The Bird took Motown by storm with his antics, hair and pitching back in mid ’70s. Rookie of the Year if I remember correctly. Didn’t he use to walk around the mound and talk to himself?

Philly has had many great icons in the broadcast industry, and the loss of Harry Kalas will be felt for a long time. Thankfully, his voice will endure, as with john Facenda, in NFL Films forever!

I can remember as a young High School kid at Radnor, the transition from By Saam to Harry Kalas, and thinking that NOBODY could replace the great By Saam. Harry was no replacement for Mr. Saam, but became a legend in his OWN right. His presence was felt far beyond Philly.

God be with the Kalas family and give them comfort in Harry’s passing.

Comment #48 was not posted by me. I am not a homosexual and I pray for the soul of those who use a medium such as this to tear apart at the character of others.

I spent more than 20 years serving in the Active Armed Forces defending the rights of ALL Americans – including the right to Freedom of Speech, but the ‘right’ to Freedom of Speech does have its limits. For example, you do not have the “RIGHT” to run into a crowded building and start yelling, “FIRE!!” if there is not one – you are then subject to arrest for causing panic. You do not have the “RIGHT” to slander others, whether in your speech or your writing, or you may be subject to prosecution. When people begin to abuse such “RIGHTS”, is it any wonder that they seem to start disappearing?

Larry, I admire your work, and I always have, but now some of your bloggers have crossed a line across which I shall not venture. I do not receive your program here in Baghdad, else I would tune in. I frequent a number of national blogs because I can engage in intellectual discourse and enjoy reading the same. This blog, however, has really gone downhill recently, and now that someone has chosen to hijack MY identity (and, Larry, you can check to see if entry number 48 posted an email address – I ALWAYS post mine with my posts), I don’t know that I will be visiting much, let alone posting.

Larry snap out of it. Wake up and take action. You have lost control of your own blog. You have lost control of your blog and you don’t even know who to? Three suggestions:
    1) Have your technical people make it such that someone can not leave an entry without an email signature. No trackability, then no entry.
    2) Have your technical people show you how to block email addresses from posting. Put first time offenders in the penalty box (like the hockey reference YFAP) for 2 weeks. 2nd offense they are banished.
    3) Banishable offenses include identity theft (sock puppet identities not included) and any offensive comments. You need to nip it in the bud.
    4) If you can’t change blog topics regularly (every 48-72 hours) then find someone who can. Maybe your wife or Larry Mendte. Just make sure they have a point or take a stand. Not just repeat the obvious or the days news story.
    5) I recognize you are a bleeding heart liberal, a member of the Fourth Estate and you hold the 1st Amendment near and dear to your bleeding heart. But your NO HOLDS BARRED approach to censorship on this site is irresponsible and detrimental to what you are trying to accomplish here. You are more concerned about how terrorists are treated in Gitmo than brave Americans here on your site. You have clearly lost it, Larry, I hope you regain control of your senses.

    Confessions of a Blog Master
    by Larry Kaighn

Rise and shine! Another beautiful day. This whole blog experience has not worked out the way I had hoped it would. In an effort to remain hip and with it I created this blog site. I thought residual benefits would be book sales and offers from syndicated shows to comment on today’s topics. Furthermore I had hoped to further the political careers of those that I’m close to and have tipped me or done me favors over the years. You know a quid pro quo. Neither has happened. I now find myself with a runaway site taken over by degenerates with my ruination as their goal. How do I distance myself from this blog without appear to be running away? How do I extricate myself from this morass that this site has become? It is like an albatross around my neck. Like a ball and chain locked to my leg. Like the pain of psoriasis. Help me. How could something so right suddenly turn so wrong?

Harry didn’t even write a book about his life as a broadcaster. Seems odd but I guess that was Harry. He probably could have written more than several books describing his 40 plus years in the business. Look at Larry Kane he writes books after spending a weekend with the Beatles, and he is still promoting them 40 years later. Harry took everything to his grave. Maybe he wanted to leave something for the next generation of broadcasters……..

Ed,I agree that making our new ballpark into a funeral home is a bad idea. Babe Ruth was laid out in Yankee stadium, and I’m told that was the only other occasion in major league baseball for this. However, Babe Ruth was a great baseball player, I don’t see why a beloved sports announcer would garner the same status. If the Phillies have a bad season it will be blamed on the ghost of Kalas haunting the new stadium. Philadelphia just broke a curse by putting the William Penn statue atop the Comcast building. For a such a superstitious city I think putting a corpse in the staduim is a bad idea- as Joe Biden says; “mark my words!”

Joe Biden does say “mark my words” and Philadelphia is a very superstitious city, to the point where it believed that Liberty place eclipsing the top of William Penn’s hat in the 1980s caused the city not to win a major sports championship since that time. Putting the william penn statue in the new Comcast building broke the curse and the Phillies won last year and even the Eagles almost got to super bowl. This isn’t my belief, its what’s written in the local newspapers. I’m sad that you think I am an idiot, but I fortunately don’t depend on your approval to guage my intelligence and self worth. I will not in turn call you a nasty name, I’m trying to live up to Larry’s expectations and make this a more pleasant place to share ideas. in #64 you seemd to think it was a bad idea, but it was OOOJ, that wise observer and canny blogger, who thought it was ghoulsish, perhaps he agrees with me, if he doesn’t I doubt he will call me a name.

Let’s see what happens to the Phillies this season, hopefully you can remind me what a moron I am in October when the Phillies do it again. Have you been drinkng today, or are you just always that angry?

As the arbiter of class, I think you’re both idiots Ed and George, but more George. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s change this blog topic.

Isn’t Larry the real idiot for leaving this blog topic up so long?

Leo is still upset because I outed him to be the Larry Kane imposter. An overall fake, on this blog and in his real life. Leo, the people at your job know you’re full of it too, that’s why you come here to blow free hot air. Your co-workers say; Bloom is a pompous bore, why hasn’t he been laid off yet? However, you’re not an odiot, but rather a smart guy with an inflated sense of his own intelligence. It’s very sad since you’ll never acknowledge that and grow to be a better more likable person.

George, that was neither Ed nor Leo in the previous posts. It was that sad soul who won’t even go out to enjoy a great day like today. Maybe his face is all scarred from people using him as a punching bag. Or maybe he’s eaten himself into oblivion and can’t get out of bed. Either way, I guess the party is over for us. We must become thick skinned and ever alert for weirdos who kick dogs and pee on the sidewalk.

OOOJ, you’re the real idiot for continuing to come back.

You know, Larry, you are actually right. Which begs the question whether the real Larry could actually be right about anything or take a stand.

Hey hey ,hey… it’s too nasty in here with all of this name calling even for a raging old fag like me. You know, my homo talk doesnt hurt anyone, I dont attack fellow bloggers, maybe fellow politicans. You guys need a little more homo talk and less meanness. Pray for Harry Kalas, and that retard George that believes in ghosts and curses. I think he pratices Sataria under the cover of Catholicism. He’s probably the smartest, funniest and best socket-pupeteer on this site, but I also think he has a screw loose in his head. That said, Leo and Ed you’re far worse than him. All of you guys should get a life and start talking sense and have your own debates if Larry doesnt provide them. He’s just one small inconsequential former TV anchor who is trying to do some good, and all you straight guys want to do is tear him down, look in the mirror you hate mongers!

Fresh tea anyone? I made it myself with my own tea bag! I’m having a big tea party tonight with all the gay guys in my fan club, there will be a lot of love – Big Love- White Love- Black Love- Red Love- Yellow Love- no hate!

I have sinned before you God! Did you guys know that Jesus was from a foster family? He did pretty well for himself, picked up the carpentry trade, and did magic tricks. Sadly , he never finished college and got his degree, and I think that’s why a lot of people don’t think he’s credible. If you think thats a nonsequiter, I’ve got a few more….

I agree with George in regards to knowing the difference between art and pornography. The postings by our new intruder/hacker are nothing but pornography with no sense or meaning.
It must be a trait of the sociopath to try to inflict pain without really having reason to do so.
Larry deserves all the criticism he gets on this blog. He’s derelict in duty and never gives us the inside info on anything. That’s what makes him a cartoon
of himself. He tries to sell himself as an objective journalist. This is a blog not the 6 o’clock news. Have an opinion every once in a while Larry. No holds barred!!

In the past I’ve accused Larry of being asleep at the wheel and an absentee landlord. Now, I agree with Ed. He is clearly guilty of dereliction of duty for allowing this mean spirited, rogue blogger to hijack his website. It is time for Larry to be relieved of his command and censured. He is allowing this deviate to continue to defile the memorial tribute to Harry Kalas without taking any action. Without swift, strong action this deviate will escalate his mean spirited wrecklessness. Larry, if you are reading any of this, at least change the blog topic for Harry’s sake.

Hey Larry, Harry’s body has left the stadium. Believe it or not there is some other news out there- Mr NewsMaker.

Obama met with Hugo Chavez, took a book from him and shook his hand. Raoul Castro put everthing on the table to discuss opening up trade with Cuba, including freedom of the press! To a so called newsman it seems you might be able to put a few paragraphs together about these developmnets, even if you just fawn over Obama without critiqueing, it would be something. You never touch Obama bowing to the Arab prince. I know you’re not very tall as well, but do people Obama’s height ususally shake hands with you in that manner? That was the white house’s explaination. Obama was nervous and cow towing to the prince. He must be a special guy, because Bush kissed him and held his hand in a sexual way, both men seem to realize who supplies the life blood of our economy, and its not Isreal’s alleged democracy. Do you have a view on all of this, its political and should be up your alley?

How about that Eric Cantor? The only Republican Jewish member of the House, a pro life, anti gay marriage Jewish Republican. Now that’s intersting to me, CBS was talking about him as a presidential hopeful. Now he’s no Josh Sahpiro, but it seems such a guy would be interesting to you. Or is there too much cognative dissonance for you to comment positvely about a connservative Jew, who is rising in power as House whip and could change things up in the mid term elections, he may be the Newt Gingrich of 2010, yet you’ve never mentioned him. Just Josh, Arlen, and Ed Rendell. You need to get out more my friend. So here’s enough fodder for you to wright a news flash by 6pm tonight, run with it Larry!

Lawrence you must treat this bloogers like children. If they are left unattended for a couple of minutes they will misbehave. If left alone too long there will be spitballs and mayhem in your room. Are you up to this Lawrence?

Old Barney, the Bush’s dog says, “never bite the hand that feeds you unless it’s a reporter.” In the case of a Saudi Prince never give them your hand, they might chop it off, bowing is much safer.
