In Wake of Murders Of Police Officers, The Court System Needs A Watchdog

Message to the Pa. State Supreme court: The latest murder of a Philadelphia Police officer, John Pawlowki, is the final straw in a series of court mishaps that have allowed hardened criminals to remain on the streets. The police department is doing all that it can with the manpower allowed. The suspects in many murders of police over the years are people who fall through the cracks of the court system because of judges who are lenient, uninformed, and oblivious to real threats.

The justice system in Philadelphia has been in trouble for many years, and the crime problem has been made much more dangerous by judges who allow potential killers on the streets. Guns are obviously an issue, but judges who casually approve low bail for violent offenders, share a great deal of the finger-pointing in the current wave of murders of police heroes.

Is this a radical idea? Not at all. Law enforcement has a foundation of police officers, prosecutors and judges. The police in Philadelphia are selfless. The DA is as tough as they get. Some of the judges are making a mockery of the justice system by not paying attention.

The Pennsyvania Supreme court should appoint a tough watchdog to monitor judge’s behavior in cases of violent crime.

And while they’re doing that, the justices should have a talk with Judge Craig Washington, who had the gall to  try to hide a photo of officer Pawlowski in his courtroom, located in the 35th Police District, where the fallen officer was assigned.

It would be interesting for the court system to see what Judge Washington’s judicial record is. After all, arraignment judges are the first line of defense in the court system.

For once in a long time I finally agree with Larry on an issue. Not only the topic but most of the content. The only surprise is that he didn’t recommend Ed Rendell for the watchdog position. Watchdog or not the judicial system is broken and somebody should keep the animals caged. Even the Police Comish Ramsey wants that.

The fact that thugs on the street don’t hesitate to shoot an officer only makes things tougher for the rest of us. Where once the police officer was treated with total respect, in today’s climate if I were an officer it would be shoot first ask questions later……..

how does the mayor feel about this? for a crime mayor, he’s been awfully silent on what has long been an obviously broken judicial system. according to a Pew poll, 45% of people think crime is the biggest problem, the second biggest % was 8! I grow tired of “gun laws, gun laws, gun laws” when every story is about some career criminal getting off easy or getting trained in prison.

Larry, thank you for changing the blog topic in a timely matter. Thank you for putting some thought into it. I really thought you were getting ready to take a tough stand but you stopped short. Too bad, Lar, you missed a chance to stand up and be counted. Instead you mollified your comments as not to hurt anyone’s feelings or draw any attention. Can’t tarnish the Kane image on this silly blog I guess. So much for hard hitting… I do think that a died-in-the wool liberal such as you are is starting to show some chinks in his liberal armor. Follow the light, Lar.

    Comrade Leo:
“Though there are so few of them, the GOP fanboys are jealous.

Jindal was like a nightlight at noon in Arizona. He and Palin will not save the GOP. The GOP is intellectually and politically bankrupt.”

Comrade Leo, I think that you, as the captain of the Good Ship ‘Pomposity’ should sail off on the Sea of Serenity back to the Land of Liberalism and into the sunset. As much as we long to hear your daily rants about the GOP and your constant propping up of liberal babbling, it’s time to sail off. Clearly you are in the zone with President Obama now in charge. Your liberal mandate will be done – good, bad or indifferent. You have the votes to push all sorts of pork and socialistic nonsense through Congress. Enjoy the next 4-6 years. The tide will turn again, my friend. Yes, the GOP is flailing about trying to become relevant again after 8 years of an unpopular Bush Administration and a resulting disasterous election. There will be a backlash in this country if the Obama Administration pushes the socialistic agenda too far. Most Republicans are not the ‘right wing nutjobs’ you routinely portray them as. They are fiscally responsible Americans that work hard and don’t want to share the money they work so hard to earn with people that don’t share the same hard working ethics. Anyway, enough of my rant. Perhaps you should steer the Good Ship ‘Pomposity’ towards subject you are better qualified to speak about like FREE AIR or Larry’s grammar.

  6. February 26th, 2009 | 8:01 am

Larry-The answer is the death penalty. Career criminals with 23 or 26 arrests or however many clearly are never going to contribute to society.and we shouldn’t be penalized financially by keeping them alive in jail.Way overdue scenario.

Leo-Fanboys ? Are you trying to be ironic ? The biggest fanboy of them all when it comes to Obama points a finger somewhere else.Too funny. You’re so hung up on speech givers, they’re the political equivalent of the news readers that you always deride.Speaking of which,in other times you may have been enthralled by the likes of Hitler,Castro,Mao & more recently Hugo Chavez. All good speech givers, all disastrous for their countries.Lets just hope your favorite speech giver doesn’t turn the country into another Philadelphia.

  11. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 12:47 pm

The police in Philadelphia are selfless.

I’d like to see evidence of this. What’s your source, Larry?

You realize that we have an elected judiciary, right? What do you propose to do to judges who are accountable to the voters? Aren’t the voters the ones who should decide which judges to retain? Are you advocating some kind of anti-democratic regime that will overturn the will of the voters?

  12. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 12:54 pm

Also, Larry, we currently imprision a greater portion of our population than any other nation on earth. Incarceration rates are also racist. African-American men are represented in prison populations in far greater proportions than in the general population. Is your solution to lock up more African-Americans who have had no advantages in their lives? I think the money needs to go to social programs to try to help establish stronger families and community, some way of giving impoverished kids a chance and some hope, not to some program designed to punish more severely.

Amazing that you cannot see that judges give pretty selflessly, too. Their jobs are unenviable and their pay isn’t all that great. Maybe they should just get made up and go on TV where they could read insipid populist drivel and make well into six figures.

  13. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 1:23 pm

Also, OOOJ & YBP, I don’t portray all GOP members as nut jobs. I have a good deal of respect for those who abide by the ostensible principles of their party with respect to fiscal restraint and limited government (i.e., fiscally conservative, socially liberal). However, those moderate members of the GOP have been squeezed out by the intolerant social conservatives, who want big government but want it to enforce their religious values on everyone. Those are the Palin nutjobs, and they’re the ones, along with dorks like Limbaugh and Rove, who led the party into the wilderness. Hey, I’ve got an idea: let’s get the federal government to overrule state governmental decisions and intervene in the Schiavo woman’s right to die! Hurrrr.

The tyranny of bleeding hearts in this country has left Americans with a “slender grasp” on civility. Bleeding hearts make excuses, blame society and government for the atrocious and beastly behavior of thugs and sociopathic personalities. Their response to antisocial behavior is to form an intervention group or teach thugs that their behavior is not their fault. It’s the environment’s fault. The bleeding hearts fear for the loss of democracy and individuals’ rights. Easy for them to say living in a crime free suburb or a high rise Condo with a doorman. I have no problem with bleeding hearts donating their time and money to social injustices. When the court system mandates that prisons release inmates due to overpopulation what is a society supposed to do? Criminals with rap sheets as long as one’s arm roaming the sidewalks of Phila reminds us the bleeding hearts are winning.

  16. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 2:12 pm

You’re right, Ed. We should have a police state. Screw civil rights. Let’s not worry about appointing watchdogs to make sure people are not unjustly incarcerated. Let’s only worry about putting more people in prison. Screw ‘em if they didn’t actually deserve it. Let’s build bigger prisons, too. Pretty soon, we could shift ghettoized areas to areas behind bars. I’ve got it: let’s just build walls around North Philadelphia and West Philadelphia. Shoot anyone who tries to get out. Private contractors could run the place. Then things will be bliss for everyone! Hurrr.

  17. February 26th, 2009 | 2:13 pm

More money for social programs ? Right, because they’ve worked so well in the past. Here’s an idea, get married, have children & raise them properly.Don’t depend on the government to do your job.Sound familiar or should I get more meds ?

  18. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 2:15 pm

Larry, I thought of another judicial reform you might like. How about a new arraignment system: GUILTY AS CHARGED. If you’re arrested by the police, then you are GUILTY OF THE CHARGE, GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL, and DO NOT COLLECT $200. It’s more efficient. Dangerous people and anyone else the infallible and honest police dislike are off the streets. UTOPIA! (Well, almost. We still need FREE AIR!) We could save money, and we wouldn’t have to inconvenience anyone with jury duty.

  19. Leo Bloom
    February 26th, 2009 | 3:20 pm

YBP, if only it were that easy. Socioeconomic situations are just a wee bit more complicated. You’ve got those GOP social conservatives who want to deny the ability for people to have abortions or who want to prevent poor people from having abortions. Kids are born into situations in which their parents cannot provide for them. So I guess you blame the kids for the sins of the parents. Punish them for never having a chance. Let’s cut off all social funding and build that wall around poor inner city areas!

  20. February 26th, 2009 | 3:59 pm

Maybe not that easy, certainly not that complicated. But go ahead & blame the GOP if that makes you feel better.I would just expect that,at some point, someone says, hey this isn’t working, maybe we should rethink this idea of having babies & not supporting them. Not complicated at all actually.

Another cop shot today, this one survived, his assailant did not.

As I stated earlier the police are not going to give any one the benefit of the doubt. It will be shoot first than ask questions……… BTW apparently another Muslim. Leo any idea on how society let this poor soul down? Could it have been that long walk to the El station to mug riders? Or maybe his baby’s mama’s daddy’s baby’s mama’s sister didn’t devote enough time to his upbringing

of society. No judges no courtrooms no parole just maximum security and plenty of birth control. Gaza….. American style. I think that’s really what the neolibs want. They all talk about human decency and individual freedoms but what they are really looking for is conformity….. conformity to their way of thinking.

Larry, you’re right on today, finally. Except you stopped short of identifying Judge Wahington as the racist that he is. Imagine a white Judge removing the picture of a slain black police officer so as not to offend a white defendant who was also likely a racist. The city would be burning and the cable networks would be ablaze with the story of racist Killadelphia. Larry, you need to indentify black racism when you see it, Yvonne Allison will not write a story to alert you about it, nor would you post it for a week and ask readers to pass it around.

Did anyone enjoy seeing the attepted cop killer lay dead in the street for over an hour today? It made me feel great! When will mayor Nutter investigate whether there is a conspiracy to shoot cops among a radical black group not yet identifed by law enforcement? It took awhile for Rizzo to figure out Move posed a threat, and it took mayor Goode’s cludless leadership to turn Move’s crazy agenda into a catastrophe. This new group might be more dispersed throughout the city, but with an agenda to shoot cops to kill when confronted- its very possible and time to find out before another police officer is killed.

Leo, its racist of you to assume that if someone is black and happens to be a criminal they are automatically socially disadvantaged and unable to make good choices. Not all black men have been abused and deprived and many of the black criminals come from good families with stable homes. Personal responsibility Leo! Even if your mother puts her cigaretts out on your genitals, it doesn’t make you a cop killer, regardless of race.

The poor chap merely has socio-economic issues that more government spending would fixed years ago. It’s actually our fault for not sending the right LLs to DC to enact the right legislature years ago.

  38. Winston Churchill
    February 27th, 2009 | 6:45 am

    London Daily Mail editorial 1/6/2009

    Obama’s Victory–A British view

A victory for the hysterical Oprah Winfrey, the mad racist preacher Jeremiah Wright, the US mainstream media who abandoned any sense of objectivity long ago, Europeans who despise America largely because they depend on her, comics who claim to be dangerous and fearless but would not dare attack genuinely powerful special interest groups. A victory for Obama-worshippers everywhere. A victory for the cult of the cult.

A man who has done little with his life but has written about his achievements as if he had found the cure for cancer in between winning a marathon and building a nuclear reactor with his teeth. Victory for style over substance, hyperbole over history, rabble-raising over reality.

A victory for Hollywood , the most dysfunctional community in the world. Victory for Streisand, Spielberg, Soros, Moore, and Sarandon. Victory for those who prefer welfare to will and interference to independence. For those who settle for group think and herd mentality rather than those who fight for individual initiative and the right to be out of step with meager political fashion.

Victory for a man who is no friend of freedom. He and his people have already stated that media has to be controlled so as to be balanced, without realizing the extraordinary irony within that statement. Like most liberal zealots, the Obama worshippers constantly speak of Fox and Limbaugh, when the vast bulk of television stations and newspapers are drastically liberal and anti-conservative.

Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer said that just as pornography should be censored, so should talk radio. In other words, one of the few free and open means of popular expression may well be cornered and beaten by bullies who even in triumph cannot tolerate any criticism and opposition.

A victory for those who believe the state is better qualified to raise children than the family, for those who prefer teachers’ unions to teaching and for those who are naively convinced that if the West is sufficiently weak towards its enemies, war and terror will dissolve as quickly as the tears on the face of a leftist celebrity.

A victory for social democracy even after most of Europe has come to the painful conclusion that social democracy leads to mediocrity, failure, unemployment, inflation, higher taxes and economic stagnation. A victory for intrusive lawyers, banal sentimentalists, social extremists and urban snobs.

    Congratulations America !

With all of the news coming out of Phila you’d think we are living in some third world country. Headlines like “cop shot”
“boy 12 shot” “high school brawl” “gunman killed” “body found” “rapist caught”……. and that’s only a typical weekday’s headlines.
Now it comes to pass with the recession Phila can’t help fund the “National Gay Week Extravaganza”. What is mayor Nutter doing over there in city hall? Doesn’t he realize who got him elected? It certainly wasn’t the rapist, the gunman, or the high school brawlers. Yet everyday we hear about them in the paper and on the news. (sometimes the names change but the stories are the same).
So now the gays are in an uproar over lack of funds to promote their Gay Bash. I say if these gays want to promote their festive affair go out and have a brawl or shoot and rape someone because that’s a cheap way to get recognition. Besides if they get caught the judicial system will just put them back on the streets again.

All doogie style stuff aside, we may be in only the second inner of a depression. The Obama tax hike-soak the rich- plan may go over like Herber Hoover raising tariffs in 1930s. I am not a sky is falling guy, but the market is telling us its a bad idea, giving subsidies to homeowners wh overspent is another huge mistake, its spurring mortgagors who are current to say, i’m no fool to keep paying either, people are payingon their cars and defauling on house because they know car will be repossed but house will not- its ass backwards Larry! Most Boomers are self indulgent babies who can’t control themselves or their spending, if our parents were the bravest generation then we are the most selfish generation.

All of the polticians outrage (Kerry, Barney Frank etc) is quite amusing. It’s true the bankers deserve a good bitch slapping, but now the politicans are forcing them to cancel any kind of event so as not to be seen spending TARP money. When a $500k event is cancelled in Kansas or New York, who suffers? The hotels, the caterers and waiters, the maids who clean rooms, the taxi divers, bell hops, prostitutes, coffee shops etc. John Kerrys outrage and the resultant contraction of convention activity is going to hurt the people he claims to care about most. In Barney’s case it means more male prostitutes will not get a drug fix or buy a starbucks and pack of ciggaretts, which in NYC is almost $10, most of which is taxes, which helps the city!

Does Barbara Steisand look like she has a vagina for a mouth? I think she is a vagina mouthed singer, yet we hear nothing from the liberal media about that. I spent over 10 years working on Frazier and we all use to joke about her crossed eyes and vagina mouth. It would make Kelsey Grammer crazy when she tried to talk intelligently about politics, she barely has a high school education, as does most of Hollywood, yet they think they have such great insight. Now that Obama is going to get to enact the great white liberal social experierment we’re going to find out if liberalism really works.

Larry, you’re no longer in the top tax bracket, so you probably dont care about the tax hike, but do you want to pay for the summer houses of your over-leveraged white neighbors, or bail out clueless innner city blacks who drained all of their home’s equity, spent it on shinny jewelry and brightly colored hats, and now face foreclosure? When Obama hugged and kissed that poor black woman who said she was going to lose her house and he said he wasn’t going to let it happen the world changed; the message is the government will save you from your self no matter what. Her case might have been real and truely sad, but the message he telegraaphed that day was that irresponsible homeowners will be bailed out, help is on the way. And if you’re black , relax, Obama has an even better program in mind, its called screw the white banker and scream racism if he tries to foreclose. All this crazy conservative talk makes me want another taste of Lassie, not Ed pretending to be Lassie, but the real conservative Lassie that I once loved, come on girl…..

I be telling my son to tell mayor Nutter to investigate those black guys with Santa Claus beards and shaved heads. Thats the gang thats killing the cops. They learning some perverted radical form of Islam in our prisons, and they takin a vow to shoot cops to kill when confronted. I figured this out from watching TV, and then I tell my son, except he too stupid to tell anyone, he think he knows it all, that dumb ass hired a racist assistant who dont work, but that’s how he roll. Wow Ed, You got me down better than I expected you would. I view myself as two standard deviations of IQ above you, but I may have to reconsider. I will be away or the more pretentious “abroad” for a few weeks on business and pleasure. The beauty of this downturn and deflation, which none of has ever really experinced, is that everthing is on sale if you’ve got cash. My guess is the right wing nut jobs (myself included) and Leo and Larry have cash. One common element among all of us is that we are prudent with money and will come out fine even if there is a depression. Its amusing to me to hear materialistic consumers talk about how all of this helps them focus on the things that matter, like health and family and religion. Spare me! but that is the upside of all this crap, America will refucus away for rampant consumerism and hopefully discover some of the things that made our parents generation happy. Like making a big turkey soup together and eating it together. Using a snow day to teach your kids to drive in the snow safely, shoveling the snow of the old lady next door without her asking and not expecting anything in return (except some nice antiques when she dies ;)

Okay gentleman, i am off to Europe and the Middle East, I could check this site from there, but beleive it or not I have better things to do. See you in few weeks.

Rahm Emanuel is a piece of garbage. There is no wonder that I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Obama. Like Leo, he wants to use Limbaugh as a Republican leader. Limbaugh is a CONSERVATIVE not a Republican. I may agree with some things that Limbaugh says but I am not as extreme as he is on many issues. I need the government I want the government. It’s just that I think our government is not the cure all for all for that ails us. I want a trust busting overseer, I need penalties for businesses that ship jobs overseas, health care is beyond being a monthly expense, illegal immigration is a major problem, inner city crime and family values is a shame. The Democrats have no answers to these realities. They just want to throw dollars at it and pick your pockets while doing so.

  95. Leo Bloom
    March 2nd, 2009 | 10:39 pm

Larry, the GOP invited Limbaugh to speak because he’s a CONSERVATIVE, not a REPUBLICAN. Fact of the matter is that they’re all CONSERVATIVES, not REPUBLICANS. The fiscal conservative social liberal (aka the SMALL GOVERNMENT REPUBLICAN) has ceased to exist. However, I understand that some children in educated households still believe in the SMALL GOVERNMENT REPUBLICAN, even though the smarmy jolly fat guy with the cloudy-eyed followers is a CONSERVATIVE.

The moderate, semi-fiscal responsible social liberal (aka MODERATES) has ceased to exist. However, I understand that some children in educated households are allowed to watch FOX News for a more balanced opinion, even though the swarmy, election fraud leading, never funny, former comedian is a DEMOCRAT.

101 Rush — Funny that the vast majority of people making more than $250,000 voted for Obama, who was proposing to raise their taxes. Could it be that not everyone with money wants more tax breaks at the expense of the country generally? Funny, but you’re in the minority on that one.

Also, to borrow from the GOP warchest of the Bush era, how dare you criticize the president in a time of war and economic crisis? You are giving aid and comfort to our enemies, sir. If GITMO weren’t closing, I’m sure you’d belong there as an enemy of the state.
