Inaugural Notes For The Hopeful and The Hateful – OMG -and… Eagles Finale
First of all, I have to say this out front. Some of the e-mailers on this sight need to either get some help or calm down their simmering anger over society as we know it. As the kids would say -”OMG”. As you may notice, many of the mad squad that writes on a daily basis do not have much respect for me, and others. That’s ok. My skin is thick. But if they don’t like the site, why do they keep coming back with more invective? I love the sarcasm and the heavy-duty critique of my humble work, but I’ve just about endured enough of the ethnic and racial innuendos. Maybe a new administration will bring some new e=mailers to the forefront.
On to the Inaugural.
Whether you are Republican, Democrat or Independent, you have got to enjoy these moments. If you can’t enjoy this time and these events, then you probably want to shut yourself off to reality. There is nothing as refreshing than the renewal of the White House – the peaceful transition of power that marks our democracy. There is history in this inaugural, along with great expectations and challenges. The proof, of course, comes with the results. But for now, a remarkable young man who appears to have a sense of exactly where he wants to take the country, is beginning a journey into the unknown.
EAGLES
Forget the last headline to this column. I was all wrong. But I take a different view on the Eagles than many sports journalists. The Eagles are a very successful team, and as I said earlier this season, Andy Reid is the King of Football around here. Frankly, I thought the game against the Cardinals was the most thrilling of the season, a game of highs and lows that rivals just about anything I’ve seen. I’ve been apologizing for the Eagles for a long time. And I will do it again. They had a fantastic, improbable season, filled with spills and thrills. We need to appreciate winners, even when they lose. In life, sometimes, everyone loses. The real winners are the people who learn how to accept victory and defeat.
Final item: For the first time this winter, some TV stations DID NOT hype the snow. So what happens? It actually snowed with some real impact. The forecast was actually wrong. What an irony.

Don’t blame me. I’m just here for the FREE AIR. The only ethnic atrocity I witnessed here is the utter lack of any mention of MLK, Jr. and how disappointing it must be for McNabb not to get one for the team yesterday. He could have done a lot to counter the Vick image that people like Rush Limbaugh are so fond of spreading. Where was he during the first half anyway?
I think Larry has rattled Leo.A defensive, rambling response & a cry for FREE AIR,a program that will never get off the ground,as it were. Now,for MLK day,I’m going to watch Sabres-Panthers.See y’all tomorrow.Work on that apology,Mr.Bloom.
that’s right larry, run this “newsroom” with an iron-fist…it’s so gluck-like of u…peace d.o.
oh yeah, i agree with larry, this was a successful season for the birds. this win it all or else deal is really a negative foundations for our philly sports climate. we made the final four..that’s hot…sincerely, danny
foundation should have been singular and not plural in the previous post
Danny-I wouldn’t worry about the grammar, most of us don’t point out mistakes.
I know Larry says he is thick skinned but I want you all to know that there are a few areas which cannot take abuse.
I don’t care how much ointment and lotion
Larry uses I remain very sensitive. So lay off the sarcasm or I’ll make sure that the new administration will take care of you quicker than Preparation H.
EAGLES
I also want to take the blame for prematurely announcing the AllState Super Ball. That was me talking not Larry.
On the Inaugural
I just got off the Amtrak train to DC. Not a bad ride. Much nicer than SEPTA. Fully cushioned seats definitely make the difference. The only problem is, it’s so cold down here I’m afraid I’ll freeze my Larry off……..
Leo, I think Punxsutawny Larry (PL) has taken aim at George’s comments, not yours. George tends to inadverantly jump the PC line from time to time.
In typical PL fashion, he has mentioned 3 topics without taking a stand, creating a controversy or making a much of a comment. He does not call out specific email violators. He loves the inauguration. He loves Andy Reid. He is a teleprompter reader, placator and an enabler.
Leo, also notice that PL has been scared away from the topic of Free Air.
George is like a dog behind an Invisible Fence. He knows that the closer he gets to the wire, the louder the noise gets. But he sees something on the other side of the fence, jumps the fence and endures the pain. He’s returned by his owner but is not punished. He thinks it’s okay to jump the fence. I will be tackling George and his problem on an upcoming show.
For some reason I feel like watching Blazing Saddles today. In teh library.
As a member of the Al Qaeda party I take exception to how enjoyable it is to see another inauguration. I’d much rather see you all blown back to say the 7th or 8th century. With a “level” playing field we can all begin to come together in peaceful harmony as Osama Bin laden has said. Of course Israel will no longer exist and all women will be confined to the home and if anyone speaks out against the supreme being his head will be removed. Other than that I think the system will work alot better than Democracy.
Arrrr. Thinks I, I’ll sail me proud ship up th’ Potomac for th’ festivities, some grog and some wenches. Wouldn’t ye know a boat o’ th’ law heaves up alongside an’ turns me stout ship and crew away, me hearties.
Thinks I, I have a dream of a land where the booty be bountiful and me bretheren face no discrimination at the hands of th’ landlubbers. I sees it stands off a-distant, flickering on th’ horizon like the briny spout of a sperm whale at dawn. Avast, me maties, we will have us a pirate king, aye! Teach ‘12!
My take is that The Last Pirate sounds a tad bit like a Leo sock pirate.
“Pick yourself up, brush yourself off and start all over again”. quote Obama 1/20/09.
oooj, sorry to disappoint, but I was out for an Inaugural TV Party this morning.
I liked how Chief Justice Roberts screwed up the oath of office. That’s what he gets for doing it without notes.
I listened attentively to the speeches, but I heard no promises of FREE AIR. Larry, I expected more at the beginning of this new era in D.C.
I also saw that Rush Limbaugh complained about the classical music, the reference to white people, and the fact that there wasn’t enough Oxycontin available to keep him from whining.
Ed, a correction:
“Pick yourself up, brush yourself off, wait for a government bailout and start all over again”. quote Obama 1/20/09.
I see Michelle is still rockin’ that big donkey zone.Am I still allowed to say that on this site ?
People it was a long day. The crowds, the festive atmosphere, the historic peaceful transition of power to an African American. Things couldn’t have been more exciting….. that is unless you had to visit one of those 5000 port-o-potties.. Larry got so excited that he couldn’t hold it in (and I’m not talking about his enthusiasm for the event). We finally settled on a cute little green model that had looked like it was rarely used. When the door was opened i nearly passed out. Larry held his breath but what was I to do? Long story short We’re back on Amtrak and I’m lovin it……
Errr I stole the show today and errr I’m going back to finish that bottle of Chivas. I’m very happy for Barry.
Ted, it was a long day and with your condition I’m afraid you might have over done it a bit. On the other hand what was Byrd’s excuse for causing a big ruckus?
I mean the man is only 90 something. Do you think it finally dawned on him that a black man was about to be his boss? What could that be like for a man who once wore the “hood”? Man those Democrats are an inclusive bunch.
Errr bottle of Chivas gone just like W. (burp)
YFAP, since there is a double standard, DZ may fly now. But only if used in the most positive manner.
Is it just me or did M.O.’s outfit yesterday look like something from an old StarTrek episode?
Leo, lapdance and honeymoon are now officially over. Hangover may last for a couple days though.
I see you didn’t miss a chance to take a shot at Rush Limbaugh. He’s likely the happiest man in America today. 4 more years of a Democratic President to rant on. Something tells me that Obama’s personal life won’t be the easy target the Clintons was but every political misstep will be carefully chronicalized on a daily basis. Isn’t America a great country?
BTW, Larry, don’t think we weren’t all very impressed by your use of the word “invective” in your mini-rant above… Was that your choice of words or did you read it on the teleprompter?
OOOJ-Not sure what to compare the dress to but she sure is beat. He’s gotta have a little something something somewhere,ya know.Don’t be so quick to assume the lap dance is over either, where’s the criticism going to come from ? White reporters will tread very carefully in order to avoid being a postscript to William Raspberry’s famous words.Well, famous maybe a little bit over the top but you get my drift.Actually this would be a good role for Larry, a sort of elder statesman newsreader whose record speaks for itself,a man who could offer a fair critique without being attacked.Thoughts ?
Larry has no opinions, he just observes.
Michelle was wearing the “Golden Fleece”.
It was symbolic of achieving the right to rule the kingdom. The witty first lady (a Princeton graduate)made the point that she was in charge now. Read Jason and the Argonauts.
If it were me, I would have been wearing something a bit warmer……..
Never underestimate the power of a woman who felt like she was scorned all her life…….
Did Larry banish George? He has not been seen since Larry changed the blog. George, let us know if your out there and have not been censored.
Larry-This is directed solely at you.I have given this a lot of thought & remain conflicted. Are the Eagles winners ? I know most NFL cities would be giddy about reaching five NFC title games in eight years (hello Lions)but at some point you have to win these games. One out of five isn’t good enough.I try not to be critical of Reid or McNabb & I think at some point fans will look back & remember this a sort of ” golden age “.The bottom line though, is five NFC title games, one win 7 no Super Bowl titles. So the question remains, are they winners ?
ahhh, that would be one win & no Super Bowl titles, not 7 no Super …..
oooj, forget George, what do you think about my interpretation of Michelle’s dress? If I’m right look out. We may have not only sworn in the first Black president but the first woman president as well. As for George I think he is stuck in a port-o-potty down in DC.
I think I’ve got why Larry is concerned about the libraries. Now that gasoline is less expensive, he’s traded his concern for FREE AIR for the cause of FREE BOOKS. I don’t give it much time.
Apparently no one bought my Michelle Obama “Golden Fleece” analogy but here’s something you are going to have to buy. If you use the parking meters down town the cost is going up 100%. Where was Larry when this was proposed? To me it’s just another reason to avoid the place. On the one hand Philadelphia could use the patronage of suburbanites, on the other hand they keep piling up costs which makes the trip too expensive.
OOOJ, here I am. Why would Larry want to banish me? I’m his muse, plus he secretly likes me, although may not always agree with me, just as I do not with him. Some of the bloggers are really disreptful to Larry so I can see why he’s angry. He’s probably a good guy once you cut through the facade and healthy ego. Larry represents a era in TV journalism where giganic male egos really worked, the Ron Burgandy syndrome, but I’m sure he can see the silliness of that era. Its great that there is now racial and gender diversity on the TV screen, and in the newsrooms.
I thought the white liberal press went a bit overboard over the weekend with emphasiszing Obama’s race, but it was historic and MLK weekend. Hopefully that dies down and the media will focus on him from a post-racial standpoint and critique him as harshly as Clinton and Bush.
I need some response here. I know Larry isn’t gonna give me the time of day but I thought some of you guys might kick in with a little input as o my rants today.
I’ll even take an opinion from George or jr for that matter.
I see Caroline Kennedy is wising up and withdrawling from senate consideration. Uncle Teddy is not the reason, it was the idiotic, not ready for primetime interviews, she made Sara Palin look like a Rhodes Scholar. By the way, did the press question her experience for the job anywhere near as much as Palin? who actually had some experience with getting elected to something. I’m not a Palin fan, but the double standard is staggering in this example.
George, I thought you were stuck in a port-o-potty in DC. Apparently Caroline has not given up on being the Senator of NY.
yankee— usually i dont care to much about grammar on message boards but out of respect to larry (an accomplished wordsmith) i like to keep it on point…peace d.o.
George,
On the Palin/Kennedy thing, the most salient point is that being appointed to round out the term of a senator is a little different than attempting to become vice president behind an elderly man of questionable health. Being 1 of 100 senators for a few years isn’t the same as being the leader of the free world. Just look at the Missouri senator elected in 2000. The guy was dead, so his wife served. Anyone ask questions there?
Kennedy is pretty well known. Palin was unknown. Kennedy wasn’t engaging in borderline unethical practices either. I think there are obvious reasons for the disparate treatment. Palin is doing a good job of playing Republican Victim alongside people like Rush Limbaugh. It’s funny how they pooh-poohed the left as PC when liberals called attention to victims; now the right has seized that dubious mantle for itself.
Bottom line is that any Kennedy will get re-elected for life despite poor judgement and behavior. That’s why the Dems want her to get the seat. She’ll have to die to give it up.
Leo, there is some validity to relative importance of positions in the Kennedy-Palin issue you bring up above. The fact remains the press went after Palin with a vengence I’ve never seen before. Couldn’t disrupt the lapdance and pending coronation.
Barry Tales – Pressing forward on a vow to shut the military prison at Guantanamo Bay as a first order of business, the Obama administration circulated a draft order Wednesday calling for a review of all 245 prisoners’ cases and the eventual closure of the facility. Closing the facility “would further the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States and the interests of justice,” the presidential draft reads.
Translation – I can’t fix anything of significane so I’ll do something to please the far left. ACLU BS.
Ed-Wait ’til April, the parking rates are tripling.I had two men from the PPA stop in two weeks ago to explain the new reality.Individual meters out, meter station in,rates doubling in January & then increasing again in April. His parting words- “we’re still cheaper than other big cities.” I felt so much better after hearing that.
Im all in favor of closing Gitmo, move the detainees to Graterford,Joilet etc etc.Hell, move them to Curran Freehold, they’ll see what’s up.
