Attention Should Be Paid To A Grim Report On The Condition Of Women In This Area

Some of the writers to this site have been very negative recently about my subject matter. My  goal is not to please, but to hopefully, make people think. That’s why it is very important to pay a lot of attention to the extensive report by Women’s Way on the condition of many women in this area.

The report, entitled A CHANGE OF PACE, is especially relevant in this season and in the current period of economic crisis. While most people in our area fall under a safety net, it appears that more and more are falling through.

Here are some of the key points:

WORK – Women working full-time in the Philadelphia region are worth just three-fourths of men receiving 76 cents on the dollar compared to men, slightly worse than the national 78-cent average.

ECONOMIC SECURITY – Over one-third of  Philadelphia  single-mother families live in poverty, while more than one-in-three of the region’s households spend in excess of 30% of income on housing costs. Two-thirds of the Philadelphia area elderly population living below the official poverty line are women.

THAT, in my view, is disgraceful.

HEALTH – Women’s health continues to be threatened. One-in-nine Pennsylvania women lacks health insurance.

CRIME – While Philadelphia incarcerates more women than surrounding counties, suburban rates are growing fast. More than  three-in-five female prisoners are mothers with children under the age of 18. Note: Due to increases in female imprisonment, this is the first time incarceration has been included in this report.
>
VIOLENCE – In Pennsylvania, nearly one-half of female homicide
victims in 2006 were killed by their husband or boyfriend, compared to
30% nationwide.  However, state and federal funding for domestic
violence services has not kept pace.

INFLUENCE – More than 60 of the largest 100 Philadelphia area  companies have no women in top executive positions. And, Pennsylvania  has one of the worst records in the nation for electing women to
office.

My notes: Women’s Way is the largest organization of its kind, devoted to meeting the needs of area women, and dedicated to letting all of us know how real those needs are. Judging by the nature of some recent email, there is a portion of the population that doesn’t care about people in need. . To those readers, I suggest picturing you or someone you love in a similar situation. This is serious business. You can read more about this at www.womensway.org/index.asp

At the risk of sounding like a misogynist,my experience with women in work has not been good.So bad in fact, that for years I refused to hire any.I wonder if other employers have had the same problem & if that’s the reason women don’t earn as much.Just sayin’.

What a great forum for women’s issues. Larry, you never cease to amaze me. What’s next a call to arms for gay marriage?

  3. December 12th, 2008 | 7:44 pm

Yankee – you are a sexist, plain and simple. this is 2008.

Fan: obviously, you are a man. You’ll never know what appears next. Maybe I’ll do an expose’ on the real agenda of Yankee.

    Have a good weekend

Larry, you need to pace yourself. 2 blogs in 3 days? What’s up? Book done? Guilt feelings? Feelings of neglect? Whatever…
Not only 2 new blogs but class participation. Very impressive. Larry, it may be too late to revive blog…
What’s up with the personal attacks on YFAP? He’s about the least offensive person left on the blog.

Guys, Larry has finally served up some substance, let’s cut the silly stuff for a bit.

I can’t argue those statistics from womans way, but they are probably somewhat true, just reconize they too have an agenda to make their case. Larry you probably still ride the train to NYC periodically. Take a look around, somedays more than 50% of the business riders are woman, comapred to 1980s when it might have been 10%. These are largely professional woman doing what was formely mens work in finace, consusulting, technology, marketing etc.

Look at undergrad and graduate schools, especially presitigious ones, woman now outnumber men at most, even in law and medicine, what just recently were male dominated fields.

Having children out of wedlock and easy divorce laws account for much of the negative stats among working class woman, things they can control with education and better choices. What about all those white single mom’s with the designer Asian baby girls? They are having it all without a man. Affimative action has helped white woman make tremdous strides over the years, black woman with education have also done nicely in last 20 years. Larry its not so grim, maybe in Kennsinton and other simlar areas, but woman are doing better than at any time in the history of the world, and that’s a great thing!

  11. December 13th, 2008 | 11:00 am

Larry Kane-I know it’s 2008 & I have softened my “no hire” stance. And frankly I’m sorry I did. When the new economic reality affects my business, she’ll be the first to go.I don’t have an agenda, just a history. And you know what Santayana said.

I had no idea you guys had such an ax to grind against woman. They are our mothers, sisters, dauthers etc. Life on earth would suck without woman.

Larry is not P-whipped to write this column, it says he has respect and concern about woman. Holding woman in high esteem with respect, and being concerned about their well being is what manhood is all about. Larry you right on this one! As an Irsih mama’s boy, and dedicated husband, and father of a dauther, and coming from a long line of men who valued and gave equal voice to woman you are a real man to care about woman. By the way, Jewish and Irish men got it locked up in the dedicated to mother department, too bad we still don;t have ours, we could double date with them for lunch, see the light show at Macy’s (you guys would just lok at the secular parts) then we’d go to the Reading terminal for lunch, each of us getting what we want then securing a really goo table to people watch for a bit, then a little window shopping and hop Septa home….

  13. Leo Bloom

  14. jack russell
    December 13th, 2008 | 12:44 pm

    JewishIrishmen are the ultimate!

By the way Leo, Larry thinks you’re an English teacher, but my FBI proflier side has you marked as computer/systems guy, with one or both of your parents involved with writing, perhaps a teaher or professor -which is it?

George,i have leo pegged as a john nash type, very bright and with compulsive disorders and has problems with everyday tasks like dressing, dealing with woman, pets and everyday living and probably walks around center city quite often and may have a lifetime out-patient pass to u.of.p minimum security pshych department.

  18. December 14th, 2008 | 12:09 am

do you mean john nash the ex-sixers GM or is that a name from pop culture like a movie or something.

  19. Mike Rainey
    December 14th, 2008 | 11:42 am

You’re right Larry. The current state of women is frightening. Just last night I was in Genardi’s and I passed a woman who smelled as though she bathed with gefilte fish.

I’m just a humble guy who wants FREE AIR. I’ve been reading a lot of literature to determine whether writers have been concerned about FREE AIR. As near I as I can tell, it’s Larry’s issue — he’s the trailblazer.

I have been wasting a lot of time thinking about how I’m going to spend the 50 cents Larry saves me.

  21. George
    December 14th, 2008 | 5:05 pm

John Nash! I had to research that one, kind of generous JR. Leo is no genius, but is a bright guy. He’s likely a computer guy, libertarian, raised by parents who valued education and spent a lot of time with him, he’s at least 1/4 – 1/2 Jewish, but was never observant. He’s a dedicated family man and has only been married once, and is quite happy with his family, and generally pleased with his station in life. About right Leo? oh yes, and he drives a modest fuel effecient American car.

What in the hell is the matter with you guys? All this bitching about woman, some of you guys need to be bitch slapped! You should be talking about how beautiful woman are and how they make a mans life worth living. Philadelphia is a crappy city of men who hate woman, that’s why woman do poorly here. You guys deserve fat sloppy toothless tatooed mall chics that smell like their periods!

Women hold society together. Their safety and economic security should be a top priority if we care how future generations turn out. larry– please post a new “news flash” item. in fact, or inspiration, i will dedicate the huey lewis song “i want a new post” to you. here are the lyrics:

    I want a new post
One that wont make me sick
One that wont make me crash my car
Or make me feel three feet thick

    I want a new post
One that wont hurt my head
One that wont make my mouth too dry
Or make my eyes too red

One that wont make me nervous
    Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
    When Im alone with you

    I want a new post
    One that wont spill
One that dont cost too much
    Or come in a pill

    I want a new post
    One that wont go away
One that wont keep me up all night
One that wont make me sleep all day

One that wont make me nervous
    Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
    When Im alone with you
    Im alone with you baby

    I want a new post
One that does what it should
One that wont make me feel too bad
One that wont make me feel too good

    I want a new post
    One with no doubt

One that wont make me talk too much
Or make my face break out

One that wont make me nervous
    Wondering what to do
One that makes me feel like I feel when Im with you
    When Im alone with you

Larry everyone has a role to play in society. Men do their thing and women do their’s. This is natures’ way of doing things. Our whole economy depends on people spending money. While I wear my BVD’s until the holes become so large that my boys are hanging out, women are buying Oxey Clean by the barrel full. Those little sweepers that pervade the infomercial market would be unknown if it weren’t for women. Women make less so they have more time to shop. Larry when was the last time you visited the local mall? BTW when was the last time you visited your own blog?

  50. George

Woman are the best, they should earn more than men if they are smart, attractive and thin. Larry, the study ignores physical appearance and intelligence. When woman have both they out earn men all the time. That’s why Larry Mendte went crazy about ALicia Lane, she was more attrative, smarter, and earned more, and he went nuts. Just as you use to; like when Jessica Savage sniffed around your achor chair in the 1970s. Larry, no one at had a bigger male ego than you in your heyday. My friend interned at WPVI, while you were friendly and decent, the Larry Kane male ego meter was off the charts. Glad to see you’ve mellowed and become so concerned about woman’s issues in your golden years.
