Jimmy Rollins: Do You Complain About The Cheers? And The VP Candidates Will Be….

Message to Jimmy Rollins. Relax already. You have been cheered for eight years. Philadelphians love your spirit and your talent. You are a winner, but winning is more about just winning. It is also learning about to deal with highs and lows. After all, you didn’t complain when adulation was rained down on you quite consistently.

The problem is very clear. You do not understand the viewpoint, or the general perspective of Philadelphia fans. Philadelphia area fans are the most forgiving and passionate fans in the nation. But they also reserve the right to let athletes have it when they don’t live up to the Philadelphia standard. The Philadelphia standard is one of demanding excellence. Philadelphia fans get more angry about an athlete showing up for work late, or not trying hard enough. We all have slumps in life, even the talented ones like you. So get over it, and stop trying to explain yourself. You have a right to get angry. But understand that when you complain, the fans WILL react.

VP CHOICES -

Did you really think I was going to predict who will be selected for VP?  Well… sort of.

For the Democrats, the nominees will be either Evan Bayh, Joe Biden, or Sam Nunn. Biden and Nunn are the stronger choices. Bayh is loved in Indiana, but he does not appear to have the “command presence” need for the job.

For the Republicans, the nominees will be Charles Crist, Mr. Sunshine State, Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman. Of the three, Lieberman and Ridge are the tops, but Crist is VERY PERSONABLE, and youthful.

Please understand that my batting average on these forecasts is lower than Jimmy Rollin’s batting average.

What do you think?

SEEING RED

The Russian blitz of Georgia, halted when the Putin gang feared Western economic reprisals, was symbolic of the bloody Russian history of rampage and destroy. There was no reason for the Red Army to begin demolishing towns after the strategic objectives were met. The conspiratorial Kremlin militarists are back in charge. Diplomatically, our response was mild. Sometimes strong words are important and the White House reaction was too soft. It got stronger by the day, but it was too little, too late. The strongest reaction was an article by Joe Biden, who insisted that Russia had to stand down . Secretary of State Rice did a good job, but overall, we needed military maneuvers, or something, to back up our resolve.

The Red Army is in Georgia? They have time machines? EVERYBODY PANIC!

Rice did a nice job of showing that there was no real U.S. support by getting the Georgian president to sign an overwhelmingly one-sided cease fire treaty. It’s an embarrassment and another huge black eye for the U.S. on the global stage. Nice one, Dubya.

What is it with you and people named Jimmy, Larry? First Jimmy Carter, and now Jimmy Rollins. Jimmy Rollins is right to call out Philly fans. I’ve lived in several cities, and the fans here are more loutish than those I encountered anywhere else by at least a factor of five. It’s too bad that Philly fans don’t hold themselves to the purported “standard of excellence” you believe they demand of the players.

While McSame wants the independent voter, he’s not going to choose Holy Joe Lieberman or Ridge as a running mate. Core GOP voters would stay away from the polls in droves. The voices of the right wing noise machine would go so shrill that only right wingnuts would be able to hear them.

I’m thinking about starting a charity to send compressors to Georgia to help them with access to FREE AIR, which is what they need in these dire times. Who’s with me?

  2. August 15th, 2008 | 3:09 pm

How is possible for Jimmy Rollins to refer to Phils fans as “front runners” when the Phillies have won exactly one champioship in 125 years & still fill the park almost every game ? Boorish behavior ? You bet.Uniformed ? Yeah, most.A number of things but not front runners.

    VPs-Romney & Webb.

I don’t why Georgia provoked Russia. They seriously misjudged how the Russians would respond & probably over estimated how much help we would provide,if any.If my understanding is correct, the people of the break away provinces don’t identify with Georgia at all.Whatever folks,it’s Cold War Redux. And John McCain is the right man at the right time.

YFAP, I respectfully disagree on McCain. He the wrong guy at the wrong time. Aside from your Vietnam and aviation connection, your judgement is clouded. SAMs flying by nonwithstanding.
    Mitt Romney.
    Kathleen Sebelius.
Biden, Liberman and Nunn aren’t even on the short list. Crist and Ridge are being floated because FL and PA are swing states but aren’t being considered seriously. Bayh is from INand Obama from IL; this ticket makes little sense. Jimmy Rollins has a better chance to be selected than this list of pretenders.
Speaking of Jimmy Rollins, once the doll of Philly he has been firmly and permanently supplanted by Chase Utley. Jimmy is having a hard time adjusting. He’s a top 6 SS but not the best player on the Phils by a long shot.

  4. August 15th, 2008 | 7:35 pm

This just in-John Kerry is being considered for VP.C’mon, who saw this one coming ?

Larry,I think it’s time to move beyond the VP choices.Lets get into cabinet selections.I’ve got Ridge or Hagel as SECDEF,maybe Lieberman as Secretary of State & perhaps that woman(forgive me,her name escapes me )from HP in some role.

This is a typical larry kane comment – his driving force is more to not offend anybody than that of taking a position on the merits. He just never seems to take much of a stand.

  9. George
    August 15th, 2008 | 9:23 pm

Larry never takes a stand and he has an unusual affections toward Joe Biden, Tom Ridge, Ed Rendell, and Alen Sector.

I thing Rielle Hunter’s baby belongs to Edwards. He is telling a convoluted lie to spare his wife further pain and hopes the truth does not come out until after her death. Rielle is getting paid nicely to go along with the story and refuses paternity test after ABC news show, didnt list father on birth certificate. Let me tell you, a piece a trash like her would have the father on there to be sure to get child support, unless she had an iron clad deal from Edwards to be taken care of and a promise they could be together once Elizabeth becomes a corpse. No man goes to a hotel at 2am to see another man’s baby from a woman he was previously pumping- that’s just a fact of human nature.

    John Edwards is the father!

  10. George
    August 15th, 2008 | 10:38 pm

Maybe I’m being too harsh on John Edwards. At some subconscious level was he just tryinh to replace the chile he last in the car accident. I cant imagine what losing my son would do to me, and perhaps when this happens to someone they feel the need to recreat life.

Ironic i guess for me to feel for John Edwards, someone who suported drive through abortion access. I bet if his wife could go back in time she’d tell his mother, the Mill Morkers wife, to abort John- with a rusty hanger.

Man George, why not let us know how you REALLY feel about Edwards, jeez!

As for Mr. Edwards, my wife explained it best: “Why would a woman bring her child along when she is trying to make a booty-call?” Meaning she wasn’t there for the liason…but for John to visit his kid.

Larry’s VP picks are, I’d say, partially correct. The Repubs will not pick Lieberman, I just don’t see it. Crist or Ridge seems more likely, with the edge to Crist…more electorial votes in Florida.

Obama’s pick will not be Nunn, he’s been out of the game too long. While I like Biden, he won’t be picked either. I think his plagiaristic past will make him too much of a target for the swift-boaters in the frantic last couple weeks before election day. Frankly, I don’t believe he really is on the short list.

Bayh is interesting, being an ex-Hillary supporter and all; but why pick a ‘supporter’ when you can pick the ‘supported’…Her Majesty herself!

Some Progressives have vomited pea soup and spinned their heads at the mere thought of a Obama/Clinton ticket. But while admittedly, I was in her camp previously and thought that she would be Obama’s best choice soon after the primaries wrapped up; I have been somewhat less ethusiastic about her being picked lately. Her and Bill’s behavior has been a turn off to put it lightly. So no, I’m no PUMA.

The latest news on their participation in the convention is a great example. However, Obama I believe, will pick her…she can bring along the 18 million votes she earned. Obama has made pragmatic choices before, picking Clinton will be a continuation of such behavior.

    August 16th, 2008 | 12:05 am

MarcAthony, your wife has it right, we came to the same conclusion from different perspectives. I like your thoughtful analysis, you should post more to raise the bar of discussion, and it would keep me more on point. Also`if I recall correctly you would add diversity. Larry would like that and its a nice counter all the white guy opinions, which is probably 98% of the posters. I doubt we have any Jews, as they are too smart and too busy to waste their time here. Now is that a compliment to them, or a back handed slap that Larry can’t attract his own tribe to his site?

  14. MarcAnthony
    August 16th, 2008 | 2:49 am

Well George, I appreciate the compliment. As for your question about Larry ‘attracting his own tribe’, well I’m going to try to ‘raise the bar’ once again: I think you are an intelligent and thoughtful individual who does not have to resort to obviously outrageous or needlessly provocative statements and observations.

But before you think I want you to go ‘PC’, I also would like to state that in this world, we ALL have said things, that upon honest self-reflection, have wished that we could take it back.

When I attended middle-school in Kensington back in the late seventies and early eighties, that area of the city was well into it’s post ‘well-paying’ job downturn and I suspect was in that state for at least a couple of decades prior to that.

There were alot of unemployed, young white men that were very angry about their situation and at times took it out on some of us kids going home to our respective neighborhoods. I lived in West Oak Lane at the time. I’ve been chased, had food thrown at me and of course been called nigger by these grown men. Of course I was at first scared, then angry…what the hell was wrong with those guys!?!?

I, along with my friends called them Honkeys, Crackers, etc., basically trying to reclaim our (or so I thought) dignity and ‘manhood’.

Then I remembered, my good friend, I’ll call him ‘Bill’, was white. This school I attended, was the first that I attended that had a large or majority white student body. Yes some were indeed racist, most I am happy to say were not.

You see, it took me experiencing that to realize that not all whites were racists …not even close to being so.
Do I still have my fleeting moments of predjudice?

    To be honest…yes.

My own political leanings while being a left-leaning moderate do not insulate me from that most base of human failings I am ashamed to say. I will say this: I am never going to stop trying to see the basic good in ALL people.

    Even you George.

I vehemently disagree with most right-wing political points of view, but have worn two uniforms of this country (Marine Corps and Army) in order to defend those on the Right, right to have their point of view. Even though at times I believed some of those that I have defended, thought that I was not worthy to do so because of my complexion.

It’s OK to have a controversial opinion,
but I would say let that opinion ADD to the discourse not detract. I believe George, you have had some bad experiences with people who are not like you racially or of the same religion. If that is true, than I am sorry.

I do know however, that you know decent people who are different from you, you met them in school and on the job…get to know ‘em better! It’ll enrich you.

Larry, why do you find it necessary to pay hommage to Joe Biden, Ed Rendell and Tom Ridge? Certainly they are national figures with stature but none represents any kind of answer for America. Biden has been in Congress for 24 years and what has he accomplished? You make like them. They may be good guys. But they are figuring into the national landscape.

  17. George
    August 16th, 2008 | 10:05 am

MarcAnthony, looks like I am right about one thing, based on your last post you do have the ability to raise the bar here!

With regard to me, I’ve had some bad experinces with people that are differnent, but mostly good experieces and beleive diversity adds to the discussion and quality of work and life, as evidenced by my wanting you to post more. This site is mostly inane talk, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but sometimes a little substance is enjoyable. I resort to the outrageous comments sometimes to make a legitamate point, but often to goad a response or for my own amusement.

I’m coming at these discusions from the right, but truely beleive racial progress is best achieved by conservative policies rather than liberal gravy train policies that created the learned helplessness of welfare and housing policies that rewarded young black men for not taking responsibilty. Affirmative action, I beleive actually cheapens the accomplishments of blacks, because as you know, whites ususally try to marginalize accomplishments of blacks if they miss an opportunity by saying affirmative action is why he/she got the job or seat at a certain selective college. It may have been necessary many years ago, but in the 21st century I think blacks are better off without it. Also, white woman were huge beneficiaries of affirmative action, and thats something whites rarely admit. Carley Fioriena for example may never have had such opportunities, but if she were the same black woman, man we’d be hearing how she’d be no where without it. Anyway Mark, I think you get me, and thanks again for your thoughtful response.

Also, if there are other diverse opinions out there, Asian, Arab, Jewish, Native American, please chime in, you will be respected here if you have something to say.

I think Larry is beginning to feel like he’s Edith. What do I do with this guy? When is he going to stiffle it? Don’t be a meathead.
You were beginning to sound like Emeril in your last “marketing” blog to Larry. Kicking it up a notch is not Larry’s style. He probably got talked into this blog thing by one of his smart friend and loses sleep every night worrying about his reputation being permanently ruined by some meathead blogger.
Larry does need to spend a few more minutes and develop a topic with that is more debatable and controversial than free air, VEEPs, Jimmy Rollins, banana peels on SEPTA and lovefests for Ed Rendell, Tom Ridge and Joe Biden. We debate for 2 hours and than the blog turns to cleverness, pirates or Hillary-JR-Obama bashing.

I moved from Philly years ago to get away from the religious and race baiting that went on (and I lived in a fairly liberal and diversified area). It just gets oppressive. The political arena should be a little higher on the mental food chain than re-hashing meaningless stereotypes that have no relevance. I grant that this blog wanders quickly and often from politics but that’s as much a function of the regulars as the shallow subjects. We all need a little chill.

So McSame has announced he’ll announce his VP on his 72nd birthday. Ridge and Lieberman seem to be out in light of the reaction he got from the base when he drifted the possibility of a pro-choice running mate and his pandering black-and-white answers at the faith forum. Will the hardcore religious right be more accepting of magic underpants?

  60. August 19th, 2008 | 7:25 am

Black & white direct answers are now regarded as “pandering”.Nuanced answers are all the rage these days.It doesn’t always come down to the “hardcore religious right” either.

  61. Leo Bloom
    August 19th, 2008 | 8:19 am

YBP, right. Because black-and-white thinking has worked so well for the current administration. Huurrrrrr.

And you bet it comes down to the hardcore religious right. They’d bolt for a third party (Natural Law) if McSame “insults” them with a pro-choice running mate. Tolerance and nuanced thinking isn’t a strong suit of the jingoistic.

  62. the other, other, other jim
    August 19th, 2008 | 8:29 am

In my view it will come down to this.
#1 Who stands out as having a plan to “fix” the current national economic slump.
If neither differentiates themselves on an economic plan, then it comes down to who do you trust with the keys to the USA?
A 72 year old guy living off his past and part of the problem in Congress for the last 24 years.
An unknown, inexperienced Black man with lots of education but very little practical experience.
LB, again with the magical underpants. Do you have firsthand experience with them? I believe that Romney would be a far better candidate than either of these guys religion and flip-flopping aside. He started to fix Taxachusetts’ fiscal responsibility after years of bad management. Now Duval Patrick is returning it to the Communist State of Massachusetts. What can you expect from a state that keeps sending Ted Kennedy to Washington?

YFAP, why would Larry single you out? Unless you stealthfully snuck into his site under his name and made imposter posts, he has no reason to single you out despite being a Republican, supporting McCain, bashing Obama and self-proclaimed pirate.

  64. George
    August 19th, 2008 | 9:03 am

Ewwwww, Leo said jingoistic! He should just get it out of the way and post his verbal SAT score righ here on this blog, you gotta wonder why a guy like him spends so muich time posting here? I guess we all have big fish in small pond complexes, there’ really no other explaination for all of this.

Looks like Larry might have gotten one right on the VP front. The Biden thing is all over the news and seems quite real. I will first be shocked and second owe Larry some propers (which is tantamount to an apology) I just dont know what Obama is thinking with Biden.

I do think Ridge is definately not a contender after McCain’s strong performance over the weekend with his life begins at conception momnet and keep the Fetus jars off your desk admonishments. No way for Ridge!

Obama had a tough time with the “when life begins” question, the Harvard Lawyer and Review editor had trouble answering questions he deemed “above his pay grade”. That comment and his performance at that forum will haunt him this fall. Too much nuance Leo, not enough gingo for obamo!

Jingoistic + Magical Pants = Win in November?
Empty Suit + Angry Man = Loss in November?

  66. August 19th, 2008 | 9:39 am

I don’t recall the current administration ever being accused of black & white thinking,so lets not draw that comparison. And c’mon, its been Romney all along. He’ll get out in front of the economic issues & its lights out for Backtrack Obama.Which of course means four more years of JR shilling for Hillary, and that’s a good thing ,as I’ve heard said recently.

I don’t know why Larry,or his sock puppet with the Darth Vader trick, singles me out.I just don’t want to be “reset”>

  67. Leo Bloom
    August 19th, 2008 | 10:37 am

YBP, you’re either with us or against us. Ring any bells? You’re on the side of freedom, or you’re an “evildoer.” Mission Accomplished. Contractors in Iraq = private enterprise = good. Iraqis will welcome freedom with open arms and democracy will spread across the Middle East. It’s all black-and-white thinking. The whole Bush administration is predicated on binary thought patterns. McSame wants more of the same.

Biden is the obvious choice because he knows how clean and articulate Obama is. Biden has much better global diplomacy credentials that McSame does, and with an ascendent Russia, China, etc., that seems as if it might just come in handy.

  68. August 19th, 2008 | 10:52 am

Perhaps I should have said “clear” thinking.Regardless,I don’t put Mr.McCain in the same category.I think there’s a sense of loyalty on McCain’s part that prevents him from trashing the President.I just hope he doesn’t make the same mistake that Humphrey made in ’68.Humphrey waited too long ( October 12th to be specific )to distance himself from LBJ’s policies & lost a very winnable election. We can only hope that McCain is aware of this footnote to history.Of course he was a guest of the Vietnamese at the time & undergoing torture.Or mai-tais & hookers according to some.

  69. George
    August 19th, 2008 | 11:11 am

Biden’s clean and articulate views of people like Obama are perhaps a clue as to why Obama might want him. Joe Biden has a little red neck underneath that white shirt collar, and its not from sunning himself at Dewey Beach. No, I think its from the small world that is metro Wilmington DE. Biden will do the virle white Christian heavy lifting that Obama will so desperately need to connect to certain West Va, Ohio, PA voters who went for Hillary. Biden will be the pit bull, that knows who to bark at and who to bite, and Michelle has decided this is the solution. They will wisely not owe the Clinton anything if they win. Gosh darn it, Larry I think you got this right!

Binden’s bit bull persona nick name will be Gingo, and supporters will sing; G-i-n-g-o and Gingo was his name-o! This will be in keeping with the “O” themes of Obama and Ophrah.

Joe Biden can not be the choice. They are floating him out there to see the reaction.
If the Democrat Party somehow convinces Obama to take Biden, he’ll be an albatross around his neck. Old, cranky, and unlikeable are not going to help Obama win.

YFAP, why are you so paranoid about being reset? Unless you were reprogrammed by the Commies in Vietnam.

  72. August 19th, 2008 | 1:02 pm

Well,we knew for sure that the Obama’s had no interest in sharing the White House with the Clinton’s,so Hillary never had a chance.Biden is probably a good choice though I was certain it would be Webb.Regardless, they’ll both wind up in the “they also ran ” category.

George-I think you analyzed that nicely,in that inimitable fashion of yours.

  73. August 19th, 2008 | 1:19 pm

OOOJ-And that means exactly what ? BPs has a special meaning to you ? I think it’s just Leo being “clever”.Also,it’s easy to comment on my paranoia when you’re not the one being threatened.

If Obama doesn’t stay the “CHANGE” course he will soon become a victim of the god awful blog pirates that roam the Internet. Some old senator from Delaware is not the ticket to coin a phrase. If Obama doesn’t want to walk that plank into oblivion he should pick a fresh face with no baggage and an optimistic outlook for the future. Does there even exist such a Democrat? What would really set the cannons ablaze is if he selected a Republican running mate. Say a George Allen or a Jeb Bush. Now that is what I call “Change.”

Perhaps Obama should pick Jack Sparrow as his running mate. “It’s a fine goal, to be sure. But it seems to me… that a ship like that one, makes this one here seem a bit superfluous, really.” JS

    August 19th, 2008 | 4:46 pm

YAP, did you just want to say macaca? Before Allen said it i didnt even know it was a slur. That’s the problem with these label words, once people learn them they take on mythical powers. If only all slur words could be defined down the way queer has been, the world would be a better place.

That poor sprinter named Gay! I mean that’s his real family name, and now young children think its about his sexual orientation, not his family name or a person that just happens to be really happy and gay. No one owns these words! They have differnt connotations, in different settings, to different people, who have different views, who use them with a wide range of affection and vehemance.

Can I have some macaca sauce on my taco!
