PATERNITY TEST?
John Edward’s political career is probably toast.
The affair is one thing. Lying is quite another problem. Blaming the media is even worse.
Even in his admission, the two time Presidential contender apparently offered us another obvious distraction. He offered to take a paternity test to find out if he was the father of the child born to his lover. A few days later, the object of his affections said she would not ask for a paternity test. Did he know she would say that before he made his offer? Probably.
What is distressing about this case is the audacity of deceit, the climate and culture of lying that has become a fabric of American politics.
The real victims here are members of his family.
And there is another aspect to this story that you should remember. Politicians complain all the time about the detailed work the media does to find out every small detail about candidate’s lives. Complain no more. When a person runs for President, their life should be an open book.
John Edward’s recent life was a lie, pure and simple. And he wanted to be our Commander-In-Chief.
This is certainly the Year of the Liar. Elliot Spitzer, John Edwards and all the rest of the people we are supposed to look up to

The International Olympic Committee should be ashamed. Mark Spitz, the all time winner of Gold, was not invited to be there for Michael Phelps dramatic effort to break Spitz’s mark. Spitz said he would have wanted to be there, but in an official capacity, or someone to cheer Phelps on. Aside from honoring the dictatorship by giving them the games, aside from ignoring human rights violations, the IOC dishonors the Olympic games by snubbing Spitz, arguably one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history.

I remember watching the Democratic debates & thinking Edwards looked like a weasel.He wasn’t getting the attention that Hillary & Backtrack were & he was cleary annoyed.

Thank you for addressing the Edwards affair. The lying really is what makes the affair newsworthy, as is the fact that Edwards apparently used PAC money and influential contributors to hush up Hunter and the Edwards staffer who now claims to be the baby’s father. That shows a willingness on Edwards’ part to corrupt political office. (It’s not Keating Five corruption, but it’s right up there.) Of course, as a member of the plaintiffs’ bar, he has a lot of practice in playing on the prejudices and emotions of jurors, saying things to win cases that he does not sincerely believe. He was trying to do more of the same, and he was caught up in it. Sayonara, Mr. Edwards. His wife also dropped precipitously in my view. If he truly told her about the affair in 2006, then she was out there stumping for him while he was lying about it, trying to defraud us into accepting him as a candidate for president. That makes her almost as bad as he is. Now they’ll just have to suffer through their $400 haircuts in their huge mansion. Maybe Edwards could get together with Larry Mendte and Alycia to compare notes on who has done the stupidest things lately.
I just hope the media evens things out and spends a bit of time focusing on how McCain treated his first wife by cheating on her while she was injured. Mr. GOP Family Values isn’t so squeaky clean.
First, Larry thanks for serving up some substance to discuss today. Leo, I agree regarding Mrs Edwards, I felt terrible for her at first (by the way I did not wish the cancer on her) and then upon reflection realized what outrageous liers the two of them are. All of those voluteers and doners who beleived in them were defrauded, and frankly they should sue the Edward’s for this material misrepresentation. Not to mention, he played Russian Rouelette with the election since if he was nominee or VP selection he could have destroyed his parties chances. The Edwards are disgusting people and thank God that we will never hear anymore about his lie of caring for the working man.
Mark Spitz, seven gold medals, seven world records, he was one of the greatest. However, his time has past and Phelps should not have to have his moment overshadowed, also Larry would you care as much about the so called Spitz dis if he were a Christian athlete? You didn’t outright say it, but I wonder if you think there is an element if anti-semitism in the fact he was not invited. It’s entirely possible, and if I were Jewish I would probably have a the same thought. The Chinese need oil and are very pragmatic, they are going to be very close allies with middle eastern countries that are hostile to the U.S and I think they could care less about Jewish matters and will pursue a dimplomatic course that will get them the oil they need- period.
Democracy demands constant vigilance but it also counts on the fourth estate to supply it with accurate information to maintain itself. When we are reduced to getting our information from the National Enquirer something is wrong. Larry, while you write a book no one will read your profession took another hit which will be hard to recover from.
The “people” always realized Edwards was not kosher years ago but it took a sleaze rag to finally bring him down for good. People are willing to accept mistakes made in life but they will bury the hypocrites with extreme prejudice.
Red Ed, you nailed it. People in the media clearly knew what a sleaze ball Edwards was, but he got a liberal pass. People like Larry only deal with stuff when the vomit gets on their own shirt, and suddenly he is “couragous” in denouncing Edwards. Larry was so much in Edwards pocket (pants if you want to stretch the metaphor) in 2004 election its sickening. He bought the idea that Edwards cared about the working class families he knew back in Brooklyn as a kid. Edwards makes Bill Clinton look Reaganesque.
One thing Larry is right about is that Tom Ridge is a serious contender for VP. I never thought it possible, but Larry may have that one right, and if he does we need to give him propers.

Sometimes when you are a sock puppet people try to wash you. That is when I made my escape. The dryer vent was my escape route. I’m sure my sock puppet owner was quite surprised when I showed up missing. Now that I’m on my own life has been hard. I had to prostitute myself to a marathon runner who ran every day and needed a lot of socks to prepare for his races. In order to free myself from that lifestyle I placed myself next to the nose of his girlfriend
after he used me to train all day. She picked me up and flung me out the window.

The mustachioed Mark Spitz’s needs to pass the torch to Phelps, the greatest Olymipic athlete in the history of the world. Phelps doesnt have a Jim Garnder style 1970s moustache, and perhaps that’s what slowed him down and kept him to just seven medals. Spitz threw a hissy fit about not being invited in an “official” capacity. He could have gone on his own dime and watched like everyone else. He has an enormous ego and unusual sense of self importance. By not being a good sport and going to show respect to Phleps, he will now be largely forgotten, which as Martha Stewart says- is a good thing!

Mark Spitz was probably not invited because he is an egotistical self- promoter! I have seen him in action! I am a swimming alumni from Indiana University myself. Case in point: when Doc Counsilman (swim coach) retired we had a swim meet at Royer Pool on our campus – ALL of Counsilman’s former Olympic swimmers participated… except Mark Spitz. Why? Because he wanted to be paid to get in the pool. Also, he showed up in the middle of the meet,distrupting everything, with camera crew in tow talking about himself and showing off his life size picture in the pool office. This was Doc’s time, not Marks! He should have gone to Bejing in the spirit of the games to cheer Phelps on. It is not a surprise he would say he was snubbed! “Hello, Mark – it is not about you.” “It is Michael’s time” Mark needs work on being more humble, instead of Whinning about what he didn’t get. If Mark would have eaten more humble pie over the years maybe he would have been invited.

Angela, thanks for sharing that. I always had that view of Spitz but did not have such first hand insight. Spitz was in Hong Kong this week on businees, so he was actually in the region. It seems Larry Kane has it wrong, and that it’s Mark Spitz who did the snubbing.
The good news is that Phelps seems to be a much nicer and more humble person, so if that’s true, no one will really care about Spitz, except of course Larry who shares a similar bloated ego, and that’s perhaps why he identifies with Spitz.

I myself couldn’t swim seven laps let alone win seven gold medals. He was the Sandy Koufax of swimmers. However his flame of fame went out rather quickly. John Edwards actually ruined his wife’s funeral. It’s clear she’s terminally ill and will die soon, and his actions are going to overshadow all the good that she has done for cancer survivors and those who have tragically lost a child. There will be a sadness when she passes ,but the country will be left looking at her husband’s crockidile tears, and sadly that will be her legacy. His actions robbed her of her identity in the last days of her life. We need more outrage about this and Mark Spitz before any more talk about free air, we need to pile on both of these men mercilessly, until we have at least 125 posts, then free air talk for everyone!

Paul Newman has cancer! Seems he was a much better and loyal husband than John Edwards, and the yet the reward is cancer! Good, but over-rated actor and all knowing liberal. An actor, race car driver, and ineffective parent. Its nice we have the salad dressing but a little more time on parenting and we’d still have his son. His legacy as an actor will live, but a mans’ true legacy is detrmined by his children, and Paul Newman fell short, woefully short.

Larry, because you haven’t changed the topic, I have been dwelling on what you wrote on Monday. You describe Edwards’ mistress as “the object of his affections.” But Edwards claims there was no love, only lust. One imagines it’s the kind of lust that accompanies ascent to the status of nouveau riche. When the son of a mill worker–I don’t know how I know that; I guess I heard it somewhere–breaks into the land of $400 haircuts, mansions, and the adoration of people who can’t see that he’s a huckster and a snake oil salesman, one imagines he secretly harbors doubts about whether he’s entitled to the privileges that his money buys him. So he starts getting it on with a trashy hack videographer who is ostensibly hanging around to document the marvelous person he’s become. Why? Because it makes him feel more secure in his role and less like a fraud. Ironically, it also makes him a fraud in light of the way he portrayed his family relationships. He failed on all fronts. He flew too close to the sun, and it melted his hair.
Speaking of lies becoming part of the political culture, have you read Corsi’s book Obama Nation? Sounds like that Corsi guy is factually challenged. If this were England, he’d probably be in the dock facing libel charges. From a journalist’s standpoint, do you think Corsi should be entitled to publish factually inaccurate smears without fear of civil liability for libel?

I think that despite his being less than 4 months away from being elected President in a landslide victory, no one really knows Obama. He hasn’t been in politics or on the national scene long enough. We’ll likely find out who he really is after he’s in office.

LB, McCain is no one’s first choice even in the Republican Party. He old, irrasible, out of touch and a Washington insider. Everything the country doesn’t want in 2008. I say he gets beat by 15% landslide margin.
I think his only hope – his only potential differentiator – is Romney. If he selects Romney and announces that Romney’s #1 job is as the newly created position of Economy Czar. Romney gets out as the economy point guy. Obama is now forced to react, perhaps after he’s made the Kathleen Sebelius announcement. Neither McCain or Obama have an answer for the economy. Neither has a clue. It’s by far the #1 issue in this election. If McCain can do a better job of selling himself as the guy that can fix the economy, he’ll have a legitimate chance. I think that’s why McCain has delayed the announcement until after Obama picks VP.
Magic Underwear aside, I think Romney is a huge plus for McCain. And this from a guy concerned about thinly veiled homosexual references…

I just don’t think I could trust a guy who believes in magical underpants to rescue the economy. I don’t think that his flip-floppy abortion views will appeal to true wingnut fundies. However, he would be a big plus to the Pander Express, being the only candidate who has pandered more than McSame.
Romney knew when to put away the jar of aborted fetuses he use to keep on his desk. That’s the difference between him and Ridge. Romney explained what changed and why he had them buried after a proper funeral. Ridge felt he didnt need to explain the jar, stonewalled questions about the jar, then one day it dissapeared from his desk and he denied it was ever there and refused further question, often pretending he couldn’t hear because of his ear problem, so reporters just stopped asking about the jar.
I’ll take Romney, too many people working anyway, and wealthy are constantly getting screwed even though they pay all of the taxes, produce highly productive children and subsisdice the live of shiftless lazy democrats who feel entitled and are basically socialist nowadays, except they wwon’t even do their share toward the welfare state. One good thing about liberal democrats is they are more than willing to kill their young through abortion, this reduces crime and saves the wealthy further taxation, and as my friend martha says- thats a good thing!

If i owned this site, i’d say its time to take it up a notch and talk to some of his old friends in NYC to figure out how to do that. Larry has a brand and idenity in Philadelphia that could be taken way up a notch since people dont read newspaers anymore. On a shoe string he could create a site called the “the Big Story in Philadelphia” and have news and contributors that people would go to the way they go to Philly.com. There is a huge working class following that really know and trusts Larry, plus if he get’s hotties like Erin O’hern to be contributors to tell lindsey lohan wanabes where to go to party he could get a hot go to phiadelphia site. If larry just wants to retire, well then this is silly talk.
