McCain Medical Report - Hillary on RFK -VeepWatch

The release of John McCain’s medical report may serve a good purpose -motivating men to get off the couch and go get a checkup. Men are lazy and fearful of the Doctor. A report showing that a man who had faced melanoma is doing well because of regular checkup may just save a few lives. It is also good news for the McCain family, along with the battle against ageism in this country.

*************************************************************************************************

Hillary Clinton’s reference to the RFK assassination in her argument about staying in the race through June, was unfortunate. You have to believe that she didn’t mean to sway it. But already, with the climated of this dramatic campaign, there are those who have already conjured ridiculous scenarios. But it is time for the Senator to stop pushing so hard. In the current case, where are chances are limited, a good rule of thumb is, LESS IS MORE.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On the VEEPWATCH– Some new names. On the Democratic side, Barak Obama may take a look at Senator Bob Casey, although chances are that a first Senator (like Obama) would fit the bill. I keep hearing buzz about Ed Rendell, and it is coming from Chicago, Obama headquarters, and not Pennsylvania. Joe Biden is definitely in the mix. His foreign policy credentials are a real plus. That makes three local prospects. On the GOP side, do not count out Tom Ridge. That’s now up to four from this region.

QUESTION OF THE DAY –Why are some Gas Stations charging dramatically more for gas than others in the same neighborhoods.? It is time to find out if chains or individual companies are trying to sneak in a few pennies more. Do you find this price disparity disturbing?

Hillary has lost it. Assassination is a path to the nomination? If she didn’t mean that, then we should be focusing on how incredibly disingenuous she’s being in suggesting that June primaries aren’t late, given that this election year started much earlier and that California voted at the beginning of February, not in June as in 1992. Also, if she wants to reference Bobby Kennedy as an historical marker in 1968, she should also point out that Michigan didn’t have a primary in 1968.

I like your broad generalization: “Men are lazy and fearful of the Doctor [sic].” Is that “Doctor J”? Anyway, replace the word “men” with any ethnic group and you’ll see how silly that statement is. (If you substitute a certain group, it would sound very anti-Semitic. Or, if one were to say, “Old people are lazy and fearful of the Doctor,” I’m sure you’d be raging about ageism.) And what about men who don’t have health insurance? You seem to assume everyone has it and can just nip off for a checkup. There are a lot of men out there who have no coverage. Not everyone has the McSame/Kane Gold Plan. Are you willing to pay much more in income tax to help save the lives of those men who don’t have health insurance by getting health coverage for them?

Price disparities at gas stations is nothing new. Maybe some independent station owners are trying to make a living, Larry. It’s not as if they get the gasoline “wholesale” for $1.25 per gallon. They typically have a markup of just a couple of cents (fewer than ten) per gallon. What if they’re just trying to afford check-ups for themselves and their families? Are there price controls that prevent stations from charging whatever they want, barring disaster circumstances? If there’s disparity, that would suggest an absence of price fixing. Why do you want to expend governmental resources investigating a nonpuzzling, standard aspect of business?

Do you wear glasses or corrective lenses? Given the number of typos in your blog, I think you might need to get a check up and see if your prescription changed. I worry when I see so many bizarre capitalization, commas splitting subjects from verbs, multiple punctuation marks at the ends of sentences, incorrect words, etc., in the work of a professional newsreader.

Come on Larry, you’re supposed to be a journalist. While I often read your blog, and agree with much that you say, your ongoing grammatical and spelling errors are hard to swallow. Try spell check and shape up.

Larry, a 10% price differntial among stations, which is quite reasonable in a free market, equates to 20 cents when gas is $2 per gallon, but it’s a 40 cent differential when gas is at $4. So its entirely reasonalbe to have price disparities in absolute pennies that are larger now than what we were use to whnn gas was $2 per gallon; the percentage differntial is exactly the same as it use to be.

I was just at the Yankee’s game and the special guests were severly wounded war veterans. Their sacrifice is quite profound. A blinded veteran had a contact lens with a pictue of Osama Bin Ladeen in a cross hair. That’s what we need to be focused on, wounded veterans and fighting Radical Islam. Buck up and pay for the God Damn gasoline, it’s the least of our concerns. The two wars we’re currently fighting are also making Israel safer, so I really don’t know why people like you who can afford gasoline are bitching about it.

Maybe Senator Specter should investigate why some gas stations charge for air and why the same product doesn’t cost exactly the same amount everywhere it’s sold.

  5. George
    May 24th, 2008 | 11:03 pm

That’s a great idea Leo, and maybe the good senator and larry should pump them selfs full of free air once they solve this great social injustice.

  6. Leo Bloom
    May 25th, 2008 | 7:18 pm

After that, I want Arlen Specter to investigate why I can buy a bottle of beer for $1.50 at the store when that same bottle costs $6.00 at a Phillies game. I think the Phillies are breaking the laws, or, if they aren’t, Arlen should create a law that makes them charge $1.50.

Larry, no one from Chicago called me. You mean Obama is considering me too? Wow, the Ren-dog is hot property. Jump on the Ren-dog bandwagon!
Larry, jump off the Arlen Spector bandwagon. He has lost all credibility with this NFL crusade for Pat Croce and Comcast. Clearly there are 100s of more important issues.
Larry, you are giving HRC far too much credit. Her assassination comment was clearly a thinly veiled racial deal. You know it. I know it. Even JR knows it.
Hey, no holds barred in this election.
The most important thing - the Ren-dog is going to Washington…

  8. the other, other, other jim
    May 26th, 2008 | 7:55 am

I think Hillary knew exactly what she was saying. I think that the comment would have only been more blatantly racist if she had been talking about MLK instead of JFK.
Also, perhaps she is laying the groundwork for her getting the VP slot so that she can “save” the country if President is shot.

  9. the other, other, other jim
    May 26th, 2008 | 8:03 am

You are far too parochial, Larry. The VP nominee is not coming from the Delaware Valley no matter how hard you wish for it. Even the “Ren-dog” is a virtual unknown nationally. A couple appearances on CNN does not make him a legitimate option. Besides he has that creepy, unseemly air about him that national voters are sure to sense.

  10. George
    May 26th, 2008 | 8:40 am

OOO Jim, you are dead on about Rendell. He suffers from foot-in-mouth disease and would be a disasterous loose cannon. He is just a local politican who has reached his political pinacle. Further, there is already a racial hurdle for Obama to overcome, would it really be wise to put a Jew on the ticket as an experiment to see just how enlightened and open minded the country has become? Not a chance in hell! Michelle Obama knows her man needs a white WASP with working class street cred to overcome her husband’s soft spot in the swing states. Michelle will be chosing the VP and he will be a lilly white Christian Boy Scout who will know his place and not detract from her husband’s campaign; a campaign which is beleived by many liberal Democrats to represent the second coming of Christ.

If you believe that this is what Obama is looking for in a VP, how does the “Ren-dog” fit in?

    1) Delegates (PA barely significant)
    2) Executive Experience (I guess)
    3) Military Service (no)
    4) Hillary Supporters (Certainly)
    5) Economic Issues (no)
    6) Foreign Policy (none)
    7) Moderate / Conservative Values (no)
    8) Brand (exact opposite)

Larry, you are the only one even mentioning him. Cheeky, swarmy and unseemly…

Regular gas hit $4.25 at a Mobil station in CT on Sunday.
    Anyone see higher prices?
That $.18 gas tax would ‘really’ make a big difference. Not.

Can somebody tell me what Hillary Clinton was talking about in Puerto Rico last week? The way I read it, she said she would resolve PR’s staus in her first term. I figure she means either statehood or independence. Do any Clinton advocates think she meant something else?

  18. May 27th, 2008 | 10:10 am

And can someone tell me why Puerto Rico even has a primary ? If you can’t vote in the GE why have a primary ?

  19. the other, other, other jim
    May 27th, 2008 | 12:13 pm

YAP, good point. All part of being PC I suppose.
Interesting fact: PR is ~4M. That would make it 26th most populous state (just ahead of S Carolina). But of course, it is not a state. It is a territory.
District of Columbia does not have a primary either. DC is larger than Wyoming and far more significant. Think Obama would win in a DC primary?

  20. Leo Bloom
    May 27th, 2008 | 12:17 pm

OOOJ, Obama did win the D.C. primary, which D.C. did have back alongside VA. They get to vote in the general election, too. They just don’t have voting members in Congress — that’s why they have the “Taxation Without Representation” license plates.

PR has a primary so Hillary can make flimsy claims about how it’s a crucial Hispanic vote.

Larry is running his own blog into the ground. Here’s an idea Lar, why don’t you invite other local TV journalist to do guest articles? Refresh the site, keep your self the star of course, but why not have Marc Howard or Adam Joseph, or my favorite, Erin O’Hern (BASICALLY WHOEVER YOU LIKE AND STILL TALKS TO YOU FROM THE LOCAL MARKET)do guest articles to get a new take. Heck you could even do a point-conterpoint with them if you feel the need to say something in every article. You desperately need a muse Larry, it doesnt’ have to be a woman, but I think that would be a good idea, espically a smart cute hottie that would make you look youger and hipper. I’m only telling you because its a good idea, a little constructive critism is always good for the Kane Man!
