Wireless Philadelphia Fiasco - Saudi Oil Barons Deny Bush - Other Painful Notes

Some notes.

This story is in red because the previous administration in Philadelphia should be seeing red over the failure of Wireless Phila. After all, Mayor Street and his advisers put all their marbles for the project in Earth Link which now says it can’t do it. Part of the deal was apparently a loan that may never be paid back. This should be investigated immediately by the U.S. Attorney. After all, public monies were spent and the result is another example of incompetence.

The Saudi government has rewarded its most potent ally, George W. Bush, with a ressounding “no” to his request that they increase oil production to help lower gasoline prices. What a great thank you that is! Thank you America, the Saudi’s say, for helping to keep Saddam from invading us in 1990! Thank you America for allowing members of the Royal family to fly out of America after 9/11, when all other flights were band. Thank you, fellow oilman George W. Bush, for not rebuking our dictactorship after we failed to help you ease the burden on consumers.  THIS LATEST EPISODE MAKES US CRY OUT FOR A GOVERNMENT THAT WILL TRULY, BY FORCE OF WILL AND VISION, ALLOW US TO BEGIN A REAL PLAN TO RID OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL!!

Some questions to ponder:

What happened to the Democratic leadership that promised us real change after 2006? They seem asleep at the wheel. The promises of an investigation of Iraq aid corruption, a new economic blueprint for America, and the committment to hold the administration more accountable have all been set aside. What happened?

On to the Republicans: While John McCain is already starting to try and Swift Boat Barack Obama, the party itself is in the doldrums. Candidates are losing special elections, and a malaise has settled in among Republicans across the nation. Especially intriguing is the reality that Republicans could lose another 20 to 30 seats in the House this year. We know that the President is unpopular, but we also know that John McCain has little interest in helping Congressional candidates. This poses an important question: Will the GOP demise give us one party rule for eight years? And do we want it?

    1) Why shouldn’t Philadelphia’s attorneys investigate Earthlink? Why go straight to the U.S. Attorney?

    2) The Democratic leadership can’t get anything done with a razor thin majority in the Senate, which they hold merely because Lieberman pretends to be a Democrat for caucusing purposes. Anything they try gets filibustered by the Republicans, and they can’t overcome the supermajority needed to break those filibusters.

    3) This year, McCain will be swiftboated. We saw that “war heroes” deserve no respect, and the truth doesn’t matter. Karl Rove’s buddies taught us that. So everyone will hear about how McCain enjoyed the company of Vietnamese and Soviet prostitutes while he was in “captivity” at a posh resort in North Vietnam, giving up troop positions to his “captors” in exchange.

Larry, clearly you’ve been drinking Chardonay and smelling your own gas when you wrote this article! Just please don’t try to tell us in the future you’re not partisan, the article is so lefty crazy. Do you even read the news?

The Saudis increased production today, and it’s the Chinese who’ve been buying oil instead of repatriating their trade surplus dollars into financial assets because they know they need the oil in the long run, and they, unlike Americans will sacrifice now for the long run and the good of their natiom.

I know you’re not a trained economist and that you never attended a presitigious undergraduate university, but please spare us these crazy populist and uniformed rantings.

George, what’s your source on the Saudi increase in production? I’d read that they’d already increased production recently, but oil prices continued to rise. They rejected Bush’s latest entreaties because, as Larry knows, they’re anti-Semites working in league with Jimmy Carter to fund terrorist organizations that want to destroy Israel.

I did like the part where Larry wrote: “Thank you America, the Saudi’s [sic] say, for helping to keep Saddam from invading us in 1990!” Maybe he’ll Google “Bob the Angry Flower” and “apostrophe.”

Actually, the Saudi Mufta said “the oil supply and demand is in balance.”, thus no need to do anything to output (nieter increase nor decrease output of oil. No reason to dipsute that statement, which IS NOT disputed by the Bush adminsitration.
Also, this is not the first time Bush has tried to sweet talk OPEC into increasing production…he did so last January, and the answer from OPEC was this: Oil supply and demand are in balance. Then OPEC did their own investigation and pointed the finger at New York, yes the New York Mercantile Excahge (NYMEX), which is, in fact the true source of our high energy prices. The claim is that it is a “free market”. Yes, it is. It is so free that it is as easy as pie to manipulate prices. the way it works is that the traders have a defacto system of buying and selling so that ALL the traders make alotof money…the losers are your 401(k) accounts which are full of mutual funds and such that take the hit whenever there are losses.
BTW, this has been going on since 8/29/2005 when, in the wake of katrina, the traders pushed the price of oil up to $60.00. The US Govt took a look said it was OK, and ever since the traders have had free reign, knowing that Bush (an oil man) is NOT going to do ANYTHING to hurt his own profits and the profits of his good buddies.
I am a diehard republican, hoiwever, I believe that GWB should be arrested and put on trial for 2 crimes against the people of this great Nation:
    1. Taking us to war illegaly (Iraq)
    2. Assisting in the plundering of the economy by thye energy traders.

Jersey Joe, couldn’t have said it better myself.

Leo, I think George just likes to disagree with Larry on anything cause Larry isn’t taking the same pills that George takes to make him think that GW is a competent Pres. My question is why are we not lining up the freighters and taking oil from Iraq. They owe us at least 500 billion worth so far. I’m sure it has to do with making money for GW’s friends and himself.

Even at my old age, I remember Viet-nam being a war that the Dems got us into and the Reps got us out of (after all the war-profiteers had their fill at the trough of the blood of innocent US draftees).
Iraq is looking more and more like Nam in that our servicemen, even though they are volunteers, are being sacrificed at the altar of BOC (Big Oil Companies).
Hey, Mr. Prez, call your high falootin’ big shot economic pundits over to my house for a real meetin’! Once I ’splain to ‘em how all that money Mr. Prez gave us ($300 lousy bucks) is going right to BOC and OPEC…I will slap the she77 outta ‘em just like they are smackin’ me around, economically, speaking.

Are there any other diehard Reps who are pizzed off about how our cash is going to BOC and OPEC? And the Prez “asks” the Saudis to increase production? WTF is wrog with the guy? Dude (Prez), just call back all our troo[ps, let the Saudis deal with Iran and AQ and we, the public will deal with $10.00 gas becasue ten dollar gas is the same as four dollar gas…I ain’t buying it!

Hey, is it me, or what?

  7. George
    May 17th, 2008 | 5:02 pm

Leo, the Saudis made a pledge to increse 300,000 barrels a day which is nominal in industry terms, but Larry ignored that fact that was in the news Friday to make his point. This idea that drilling anywhere in America is off limits, but we can demand Saudis step and fetch to our oil needs is very last century thinking. Now that they have growing economies in China, India, and Russia to buy oil, they can easily flip us the bird when we make demands. And the dirty little secret that Larry will never confront is it’s because of our loyality to Isreal. The Arabs use to have to sell to us, we were the olny real demand in the world, now they don’t since there are plenty of other booming economies who will pay market prices. Obviously they prefer to sell to India, Russia, or China- all things equal if pricing is the same- as they then are not helping America, the country that so staunchly suppports their mortal enemy- Isreal. It’s actually very rational of the Saudis, and for America it’s the hidden cost of being loyal to Isreal for the last 60 years. And Larry, before you mark me down as an anti semite, I support our policy toward Isreal. And the president you think is a semi retarded drunk, spelled it out very clearly this week. Basically, a senator wanting to negotiate with Adolf Hilter in 1939 would have been unlikely to have changed the course of that outcome!

Republicans in recent history have had the right policy in supporting Isreal and now we are paying for it at the pump. So Larry, why don’t you close your cake hole about the cost of gas, it’s for a very good cause!

  8. Leo Bloom
    May 17th, 2008 | 8:31 pm

But, George, that was a Republican senator that wanted to negotiate with Hitler. Surely the Republicans would have gotten the job done.

  9. Leo Bloom
    May 17th, 2008 | 8:36 pm

George, work on the reading comprehension, too. Saudi’s rejected Bush’s request that they increase production. That 300,000 barrel per day boost was something they did unilaterally earlier in the month.

Here’s the Inquirer’s take on it:

As oil prices hit another record high on Friday, Saudi King Abdullah rebuffed Bush’s request for higher oil production to take the pressure off prices. The high prices are a political nightmare in a presidential election year for Bush and his would-be Republican successor, Sen. John McCain. Bush said he cautioned the king about the repercussions of skyrocketing prices.

    . . . .

Saudi officials said the kingdom was pumping all the oil that its customers want and that production had been increased by 300,000 barrels a day earlier this month.

  11. George
    May 17th, 2008 | 9:11 pm

Thanks Leo, for properly footnoting my factual asertion with respect to the 300,000 barrels that the Saudis agreed to pump. You would be a great fact finder and an invaluable assitant to a professional of my stature, I’d love to get your resume.

    May 18th, 2008 | 6:47 am

First of all, would you propose planning hardball with the Saudis when prices are already at nearly $4? Let’s piss off every oil producing country in the Middle East. That would be a good strategy for short and long term oil shortages. Larry, your bias is apparent.

6 months ago I thought the Repubulicans were toast. After cheeky John McCain got the nomination, I thought that was the last nail in the coffin. McCain will likely implode between now and November but the Dems find themselves in a real conundrum. One candidate that half their constituency hates. One candidate that the base thinks is an empty suit or worse. Both could implode before August.
The last administration in Philly was a corrupt as almost all that preceeded it. Wireless Philly, which would benefit everyone but is only important to the laptop crowd that will really benefit.

Obama is a young man, no one I know in that age range and of a similar socio-economic background call woman sweetie and not know it’s condesending. But when you huff your own gas and sip the Chardonay , its only the other people who need to be polically ccrrect in such word choices. YBP, there are some people who served on the same boat who claim they never saw him get in a jet. We know he went to the VC willingly in exchange for sex and money. His father had fed him a lot of sensitive information, and his betrayal of the U.S. caused us to lose the war. Wait for the ads this fall.

Wait for the ads this fall, OOOJ. If you think Bush was an incompetent drunk, just wait until everyone finds out that McSame finished 894 of 899 in his class at the naval academy. There wasn’t much room below him. It’s clear that he succeeded on merit, not by his father’s connections or the fact he married into money and political influence in AZ. Merit is the Republican way.

He may wear a flag pin now, but he denounced the U.S. when he was in Vietnam, demoralizing the troops and giving aid and comfort to our enemies. He gave away critical information concerning troops, leading to numerous deaths. Wait for the ads this fall. It’ll be a hoot.

  55. Leo Bloom
    May 20th, 2008 | 2:12 pm

Here’s one I’m not making up. McSame has committed another gaffe on Iran, demonstrating he just doesn’t get it. He believes that Ahmedinejad is the leader of Iran responsible for all of its foreign policy. However, the Supreme Leader of Iran (i.e., the one who actually sets policy and controls the army, etc.), is Ali Khamenei. When he was called on it, McSame denied that Khamenei controls Iran.

Are we sure this guy is playing with a full deck? I don’t want someone who doesn’t understand basic issues of foreign governments to get the White House. We got that with Bush, and he’s whipped up anti-American sentiment around the world through his policy blunders. Let’s not have the McSame.

However, that will not stop me from speculating on Teddy’s next political move. Let’s assume his time is limited to a few months. Can you imagine how powerful his leaving a bunch of commercials to be run post-mortum for Obama next October/ November? Teddy saying Obama is the man he would want to be the legacy to his brothes RFK & JFK? This would be the ultimate Kennedy political power play, a trump card that Teddy could use to change the course of American history after his death or right before he passes. You read it here first ladies and gentleman, it’s going to happen!
