Missing Issue In The Campaign — Do They Have A Ticket To Ride?

Here we have gasoline inching to $4.00 per gallon. Americans are being squeezed out of normal everyday opportunities to travel, enjoy, and do the things that are necessary in life. Retail operations are suffering and there is no question by any economic standards that the price of oil is causing our economic woes. Despite this obvious dilemma, the three Presidential candidates have said little about the missing issue in the room = federal and state support for comfortable and safe MASS TRANSIT.

Have you been on Septa lately, especially the regional rails.? You’ll find that the trains are packed and that people are learning quickly that traveling by public transit is a sharp and wise alternative to paying a small fortune to drive cars. Obviously, we need our cars. but we also need a long range vision that will help us unchain ourselves from the imprisonment of foreign oil. Where are the answers from the candidates?

NUTTER POLL –

The Inquirer reports that an internal campaign poll shows Mayor Nutter with a wide favorable rating. No surprise there. The man conducts himself in public with a sense of command, and an appearance that the powers of the office have not affected his ability to see things clearly. As I’ve said for years, communication is the beginning of understanding, especially in the world of government and politics.

RENDELL FOR VP?-

Although it seems improbable, the idea of an Obama - Rendell ticket is not far fetched. As the WEEKLY STANDARD magazine mentioned last week, the concept of selecting a Clinton supporter who has shined recently on the national scene is not out of the realm of possibility. When Obama goes over the top, Rendell will join forces with him immediately. He is the Governor of a crucial state. He now has a national name. Watch this one.

I’m getting very tired of having to delete hateful entries on the blog. Be as cutting edge as you want, but end the religious and racial slurs, or find another place to deposit your hate. Attack me all you want, and by all means, lay it all out. But there will be no tolerance for hatred on this site.

Ah, Ticket to Ride. I see what you did there.

Larry, mass transit doesn’t play in places outside of major cities. Do you think the candidates want to look like urban “elitists” by favoring mass transit funding? What about all the “hardworking white” people who don’t want to see urban mass transit subsidies from the federal government?

The last thing Obama needs is a smarmy politician like Rendell as VP candidate. Obama is about change, about moving away from politics as usual. Fast Eddie is nothing but politics as usual. In fact, I think Robert Penn Warren wrote a book about him. The suggestion is pretty idiotic when you get right down to it, as are suggestions that Obama offer the VP spot to Hillary. And, no, I’m not saying this because I’m some kind of anti-Semite.

I think most people think of mass transit as a financial sinkhole. It always seems to need more and more state and federal money and its employees seem to have little interest in the job they do. I think it has little importance outside of its actual users.
Just before I was about to hit post, it occurred to me that mass transit might not be as economic as I thought at first. Since I live in the city, I have used the local bus and subway/el routes. At the current fares, I don’t really think I would save any money, unless I was riding the el from Bridge to 69th street of the Broad Street Subway from Pattison to Fern Rock. When I used to commute from NE to Malvern, I used about 4 gallons a day. I don’t know the regional rail rates, but I wonder whether I could save using the combination of Septa buses and rail lines it would take. I understand there is a convenience factor, but I think that mass transit can be easily overrated as an economic alternative when you factor ALL of its costs, adding the state and federal tax dollars with the fares.

SteveMG, at the same time, public transit is more energy efficient, getting many more passenger miles per gallon of fuel. I think it’s ultimately worth funding, but, as here in PA, you can’t make a national issue of it because it inspires a lot of resentment among the bitter voters in rural areas, who think that it’s their tax dollars that are funding the mass transit in big cities or the NE Amtrak corridor, even though the net redistribution of wealth via the system is to the net benefit of those people in rural areas, who pay little in federal tax compared to urban/suburban taxpayers. And Republicans would attack the proposition as depriving individuals of cars and fostering collectivism. And that’s why we suck compared to Europe or Japan, with their excellent high speed rail systems. Of course Jimmy Carter likes mass transit, so it’s probably anti-Semetic.

  4. May 12th, 2008 | 3:52 pm

Mass transit sounds a lot better on paper than it is in practice.I got on an El last week & saw 3 young cretins with their feet on the chairs, one was eating & another drinking something.I’m a city guy but the scene was too scuzzy.I’ll stick to my bike.

  5. May 12th, 2008 | 4:03 pm

The reason Mass transit works in other big cities & in Europe is because people don’t routinely trash the stations, buses or trains.Nor have they progressed to the point where urinating in the stations is common.I agree,it’s better on paper.

No way on Fast Eddie for VP, not nearly sophisticated enough for Obama. He will pick a very refined Chardonay liberal that he can relate to and will do as he’s told; espeically since Michelle Obama will be calling the shots as VP. Look for a very weak white bread WASP man or woman for VP with some working class credentials, but who’s a genrtation or two removed from ever having worked. John Edwards might fit that bill- did you know his daddy was a mill worker ;)

Mass transit subsidies are a nice idea, I ride Amtrak everyday, and while its expensive,it’s safe, clean and fast. Larry they do not have meaningful senior discounts, so forget about taking the train to NY on Wednesdays to see matinee shows on Broadway. Although I bet those blue haired ladies would be pretty excited to see you…

I’d like to see mass transit fares become tax deductible. That would be one good way for the feds to “subsidize” the system. Just don’t expect to hear much about it on the campaign trail.

To those who poo poo the mass transit experience because the stations are filthy–and many are–why couldn’t the government pay to have them kept up? Or to electrify the walls to keep hosers from peeing on them? Or to put jackbooted officers on every train to bust skulls of those who dare to scarf pizza or 40s?

George, I think it’s interesting that you believe Michelle Obama will be the functional equvalent of Hillary in Bill’s White House. I don’t see that at all, although I’d agree that she’s not a pill-popping Stepford doormat like Cindy McCain or Laura the Librarian.

  9. May 12th, 2008 | 4:52 pm

Why not do what Boston does & sub out cleaning in the stations ? Seems to work there. The jackbooted officer thing is a bit Draconian, though I guess you’re goofing.I don’t see people eating on buses & trains in other cities.

    Larry,

Great blog as always and one that hits home personally as well. I am a user of Atlanta’s ‘rough equivalent’ to SEPTA…MARTA (Metropolitan Alanta Rapid Transit Authority. I say rough equivalent, because unlike SEPTA which serves almost the entire Delaware Valley,
MARTA only serves TWO out of five core counties…in a metropolitan area that has at last count TWENTY! Within this miniscule service area MARTA provides bus, heavy rail and paratrasit. But it is still the NINTH largest transit authority in North America. Given it’s size MARTA does not receive ANY STATE ASSISTANCE, but is overseen by a STATE Commitee! The lion’s share of operating and capital costs are barely covered by a penny sales tax in the two counties and the City of Atlanta; with the rest covered by the Federal Government.

This shameful practice is perpetuated by the rural counties in Georgia (which now most recently include some of the counties that now make up Metro Atlanta…sprawl changed that), that refuse to allow state gasoline tax to fund the system without amending the state constitution, even though due to rising gas prices and BEFORE, the ENTIRE metro region drives to the train stations or Park and Rides and use MARTA! Another reason is racism…can’t let ‘them’ enter ‘our’ areas cheaply!

By the way folks, we have reached a scary number…385. That’s 385 parts of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere per million. We need to get down to at least 350 by 2012 or we will find aspects of global climate change IRREVERSIBLE…polar ice caps may have already reached this frightening scenario. COMMUTE PEOPLE! Check out http://www.350.org to learn more.

Does anyone realize the Polar Ice Caps shown in Al Gore’s documnetary were lifted directly from the movie “The Day After Tomorrow”. Before any green peace nazis try to tear my head off, please read the article in the link below. Professor Geigengack has studied climate change for 40 yearss at the University of Pennnsylvania and is a self admitted liberal and supported Gore. However, he has major issues with the global warming hysteria and found Gore’s movie to be factually lacking in many respects. Don’t beleive me, see what the expert has to say.

RB, not only would I vote for a Muslim or a Buddhist, but I would also eat green eggs and ham with a Muslim or a Buddhist, assuming the Muslim or Buddhist would be able to eat ham. Or eggs.

MarcAnthony is effectively pointing out the same thing I did: mass transit isn’t a campaign issue because rural folk will not support it willingly. Just look at the plan to toll I-80 and the backlash among the hill folk in PA, who like having a nice road that is funded principally by the taxes paid by others but who are up in arms about possibly paying a toll on that road that would subsidize mass transit and conserve energy.

In any event, it’s not a missing issue. For now, it’s just lumped in with the energy reform stuff that they talk about.

JJ, I sat near a paper plate covered with chicken bones and scattered rice last night on the Market/Frankford line at about 8:00 as I rode out to 69th Street. I agree that it’s disgusting. At the same time, I don’t think it’s a problem that cannot be solved. SEPTA could make sure that people entering the platforms aren’t bringing food like that with them. Or they could have SEPTA police enforce the rules and kick offenders off of trains or fine them or, better yet, make them do community service cleaning up the trains and stations.

  33. Leo Bloom
    May 13th, 2008 | 11:41 am

OOOJ nailed it on the Vince Foster bit. Obama is about change and about moving away from the divisive politics as ususal in D.C. Hillary is about going back to the future and fostering divisions. He couldn’t have her (and cigar boy) on the ticket, so it’s not even worth speculating about.

  34. the other, other, other jim
    May 13th, 2008 | 11:56 am

The only way that HRC goes on the ticket is if Obama thinks he is likely to lose nomination to her. It doesn’t appear that is the case. I think he rather lose without her than win and live with her for 4-8 years.
Too much bad blood. The Party may try to convince him he can’t win w/o her and it’s for the ‘good of the Party’.

Her negatives are so huge she would drag him down. If she couldn’t beat him, what makes anybody think she would help much against McCain? 36. George
    May 13th, 2008 | 12:50 pm

Leo, I think Michelle Obama would be as powerful or perhaps even more powerful than Hillary was, now that there is a precedent for that type of First Lady. Behind all successful men there tends to be a very successful insightful woman who knows him best. My sense is Obama got this far this fast by listening closely to Michelle. She would never want the Clintons in 2nd position, and she will correctly acccess that a plain Vanilla WASP who connects with working people is where Obama is weak and where McCain has unique powers, especially for a Republican. McCain can go to a VFW Post in Ohio or PA or anywhere and connect with the all important hard working white man. Obama proved he looks like a fish out of water in that enviorment (i saw him bowl and feed a cow- not natural for him). Thus the VP candidate will be a good old boy, to give the good old boys comfort that if they vote Obama they will not get a pig in a poke.

Also, if Michelle becomes first lady she can legitimately be referred to as Michelle “O”, and I think her dream is to be the black Jackie “O”, - she is determined to achieve that. White people, espcecially men are going to have to get use to poewerful black woman, and it will be an adjustmnent, even for Larry, who while claiming to be color blind has never reported to a black female news director, producer, station manager etc. It’s different, and will be an adjustment for all of us.

  37. May 13th, 2008 | 1:17 pm

OOOJ-I think the problem IS the eating & drinking on trains. The trash is the by product.Does SEPTA enforce any laws ? This doesn’t even begin to address the question of why someone would want to eat on a train or a bus.

Lambert, in London they just made alcohol consumption illegal on the Tube. That’s right. When I lived over there in the early 1990s, you could drink on the Underground. And it was disgusting. I worked late sometimes, and I’d catch a train on the Picadilly Line that would have a car with vomit all over the seats, etc., because some drunk lost his lunch. That’s worse than what we’ve got here by a long shot. However, I agree about enforcing the rules. It upsets me to see people on the 100 line eating food right behind the conductor and under the sign that says food is prohibited.

If you kept food out of stations and off of trains, you probably wouldn’t have such a rat problem on SEPTA.

While we’re at it, let’s encourage the use of bicycles but make it illegal to ride them on the sidewalks in the city. In other cities where I’ve lived, it was illegal to ride them on the sidewalk. I’ve been hit a few times by bike messengers who weren’t satisfied to stay on the street.

Leo-You sure they were messengers & not civilians ? Messengers I’ve seen seem to delight in riding right in traffic.Like right down the middle of Market St.You could drink on the trains in London ? What was the impetus for changing that ? Anything to do with the growing Muslim population ?

  42. Leo Bloom
    May 13th, 2008 | 3:56 pm

Lambert, my wife and I once rode with a friend and his fiancee from a bar by work to his place in North London, and he and I were drinking MD 20/20 (see, I’m no anti-Semite!) on the Tube. No one cared. I think the impetus for changing it was people’s continuing revulsion when they found puke all over the floor of some of the cars. A few bad apples spoiled it for the rest of the bunch. The Underground isn’t exactly clean either. It just has much better PR. It appears that the union representing the train drivers is upset because they don’t want to be the ones to have to enforce the no drinking rules.

As for sidewalk collisions, I guess it’s been messengers and “civilians.” The messengers sometimes cruise along the sidewalks when they get to their destinations. There are good and bad messengers — some are conscientious, and some are crazed. I think the answer is to keep bikes off of sidewalks. Create more bike lanes or something.

Any by the way Larry, since it’s well known you use the term aniti semitic rather loosley, I am going to begin using the term anti christ in the same manner. My first accusations; Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Walters are the anti christ. Speaking of Babs, can you believe the way she outed that nice African American senator for a 30+ years ago affair to sell a book? Larry as a journalist and a Jewish American you must be embarassed by her on at least two counts. Barbara passed notes to terrorists and met with Momar Kadaphe among others. Do you beleive she is anti semitic because she talked to these people and sometimes seemed to be offering an olive branch? Or, is there a different standard for journalist than for a former president? (i’m no fan of Carter so I will gladly add him to my Anit Christ list) Its a fair question, and I respectfully ask that you examine a powerful journalist like Barbara Walters and lets include Oreilly, Dan Rather and Tom Brokow in a future column. It seems it’s something you know about but is a third rail i have not seem you touch. Touch it Larry!

Hillary proved she can win among ignorant rednecks. Whoopie! She might just run as McCain’s VP candidate, joining Joe Lieberman in the hall of shame. I’ve spent a lot of time in West Virginia. My wife originally lived there. She escaped. Very few do. The people I’ve met there are among the least informed and most bigoted I’ve ever met. Don’t get me wrong — some of them are nice. They’re just ignorant and poor. Like Jack Russell.

It’s all relative in West Virginia.

Oh, and can I get an “anti-Semite”? Some of the most anti-Semitic people I’ve ever met I met in West Virginia.

Chiclettooth, a mite bit harsh? Yes? They are backwards in West Virginia, but we shouldn’t bash Hillary for her ability to win the “hardworking American” vote. After all, West Virginia is obviously the hard working economic engine that drives the entire country. Where would we be without it?

In her speech, she praised Byrd. Given that he was against the Iraq war, which she voted for, I’m assuming she was celebrating his former KKK membership. That seems to be more up her alley these days.

    Helloo Larry,
It’s 6 am,5 am your time,I think I heard on the news chris matthews was on top of city hall threatening to jump, jump chris jump!,I must correct myself I said last night Hillary won by 30 points make that 41 points, already the peanut gallery bloggers are already taking shots at the hard working people of West Virginia,
Hillary was glowing last night her speech was on target with the new Magic Number 2209 this race ‘ain’t over’ until Hillary says it’s over!
I’ll bet michelle and barry felt like borrowing the hole sadam was hiding in last night,LOLOL.
Anything is possible Larry you been around long enough to know that, maybe if you Larry had given equal time to Hillary with an interview it may have been the difference, lolol.
If Hillary’s not quiting then I am not quiting,my favorite way to get to work before drivers went insane was to ride my blue schwinn le tour cruising thru the different areas of the city to 37th and Chestnut with my backpack and my walkman and with John Denver playing:ALMOST HEAVEN WEST VIRGINIA,TAKE ME HOME…now that was living Larry,
GOD BLESS JOHN DENVER!!! GOD BLESS HILLARY!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!

JR, maybe Hillary can add to her $20 million + campaign debt and rent that room for me. She’s managed to blow through $200 million (raising about $180 million and deficit spending another $20 million) to end up a loser. I don’t that that’s the person I want “managing” our economy.

It’s clear that Hillary wins the demographic that is so ignorant that it believes Obama is a Muslim, even after all the “Wright stuff.” She’s got a great base there in WV.

Jack, Hillary does look great, going to get my wife a pants suit too. Sadly if the press had done its job voters would have become aware of Obama’s weaknesses much sooner and the tide would be with her.

Also, what’s up with all of the vitriol being spat at working white men in West Virgina? These guys mine the coal that fires the electic plants we use, the slaugher the animals we eat, drive the 18 wheelers, etc, they are the back bone of America. I know they make the Chardonay liberals uncomfortable, but at least show them as much courtesey and respect as you show toward hard working African Americans, or Chineese Americans, who you would never dain to mock as a group in such a disrespectful manner.

JR, you’re just a silly and weak, repetitive troll. WV was virtually uncontested. Unlike Clinton wasting millions in NC, Obama didn’t dump money into WV. He made a single appearance there; Hillary camped out. I don’t know why I’m bothering to explain this to you. I’m ignoring internet edict #1: don’t feed the trolls.

George, the “vitriol” is based on the fact that a substantial number of people who voted in West Virginia falsely believe Obama is a Muslim. They simultaneoulsy fault him for spending 20 years in Wright’s church while believing the slander from the GOP, perpetuated by Hillary, that he’s a Muslim. When people vote according to their prejudices it’s a bad thing. When they vote according to their prejudices based on their ignorance of the facts it’s a very bad thing.

I agree Leo that ignorance is a dangerous thing, but so is condeming a whole group of people for the actions of a few. It is a liberal double standard to attack virle white men by using sterotypes and generalities that they would never apply to any other minority. It makes elitist feel good I guess ,but it also exposes their hypoocracy, and that’s why Obama is having trouble with this subset of Americans. Southerners, rural people, religious fundamentalist etc. are not nearly as stupid as many of you like to think.

George, fair enough, but it’s not just “virile white men.” You’re ignoring the uneducated and elderly white women, who are even more in Hillary’s camp in WV. And it’s not all whites; it’s whites in rural areas who haven’t been exposed to a world beyond their rural “paradise,” either through travel or education. What I’m saying isn’t based on stereotypes. It’s reflected in the exit polling, where at least 20% confessed that race affected their choice, and where numerous people thought Obama is a Muslim.
