The Pride and The Passion – Rob Andrews Takes The Plunge In A Democratic Party Battle

“This is a David Vs. Goliath race and the country is ready for some Goliath’s.”

This is the quote from Congressman Rob Andrews  to me in  a phone conversation. Andrews  stunned the political world by announcing that he will challenge fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg in the June Primary. The surprise was that Andrews, one of the most powerful Congressmen in the Northeast, would challenge Lautenberg who is a veteran of the Senate and has the ability to finance his own campaign.

SOURCES TELL US THAT ANDREWS ALREADY HAS THE SUPPORT OF A NUMBER OF COUNTY CHAIRPERSONS, AND WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM RAISING THE MONEY FOR AN EXPENSIVE RACE, JUST TWO MONTHS AWAY.

The Andrews strategy is interesting. He could force Lautenberg into retirement. Lautenberg may not want the aggravation of a contested primary. But Andrews also knows that it will be a light turnout primary. After all, New Jersey decided to be part of Super Tuesday in February, so there is no incentive for voters to come out on a warm day in early June.

Lautenberg’s financial coattails are powerful. But Andrews will assert that it is time for new blood in the Senate. And in a year when people are looking for “change”, he may feel that this contest is worth the risk.

What will Governor Corzine do? Officially he’s backing the incumbent, but he won’t play a major role. Corzine has his own political challenges and he will stay on the sidelines.

This will be one of the most fascinating races in the country, not as exciting as Obama-Clinton, but worth watching. It will be expensive and not exactly cordial, unless of course, the venerable Frank Lautenberg thinks its time to walk away.

Does anyone care besides Andrews and maybe Lautenberg?

Talk about being at the right place at the right time. Ole Frank Lautenberg had the advantage of running against two crooks when he won a political office.
Larry if you don’t think the general public understands what is going on you are an idiot. Frank with all his money could have bought the governor’s seat if it was available at the time. Unfortunately for NJ Corzine had the right time and right amount of money to buy his way into the public domain.
I truely believe the people that live in NJ are all related to Tony Sopraano.

Quick – someone wake the Laut up from his 5-year nap – someone’s running against him!

Andrews should already be in the Senate, taking the seat Floriozine abandoned. But the Democrat party decided to go with the affirmative action P.C. choice instead. And NJ voters seem to like to bend over and take whatever the Democrat party gives them. I hope you at least get dinner out of it…

I’ll pick Frank Lautenberg as my VP when I receive Democratic Presidential Nomination this summer. Sleepy is good! Now that will be the Dream Ticket!

Lautenberg had already “retired” from the Senate when he took over the campaign for Torrecelli. I don’t think he’ll put up much of a fight.

How is this going to improve SEPTA security? I don’t get it.

Leo, maybe the Laut will retire and join the Guardian Angels. He can pose as a sleeping old man on the train and they can use him as bait to catch the hooligans…

Frank will be available after November’s election when our Dream ticket puts the voters to sleep. He will be available full time to ride SEPTA, join Guardian Angels and even become a Paramedic…
BTW, Leo, SEPTA is yesterday’s news. No one killed today..

If Larry is riding SEPTA, I hear it will get lots of coverage. Barack hipped me to that tip.

If Larry is riding, you only have to outrun him.

Larry, how could you hear that Andrews was misusing that possessive apostrophe s in the quotation? That’s pretty perceptive.

Larry, seriously, you do have a respectable education, right? Your writing is chock full o’ grammatical errors. What’s the deal?

    At least your consistent.

Larry, when you get some time back at the computer, please offer a new blog. This one was too weak to last more than a day.

Joe, is the Democrat Party the same thing as the Republic Party? It’s “Democratic Party.” Don’t listen to Bush. It’s just one of the many, many things he can’t get right.

There was another subway attack just a week after Mr Conroy’s murder. When are these going to be correctly characterized as race motivated hate crimes?

  20. April 4th, 2008 | 11:15 am

    George,
I expect that they will be characterized as race motivated when most of them are no longer black on black crimes

  21. Joe
    April 4th, 2008 | 2:39 pm

I call it the “Democrat Party” because it irks Democrats.

  22. Leo Bloom
    April 4th, 2008 | 3:37 pm

Joe, it doesn’t irk me. It’s just a signal that the person using the misnomer can’t and shouldn’t be taken seriously. Like Dubya.

Larry, I am out of work, suffer from depression and I am about to lose my home, yet I find time to check in on your blog to see what you have to say.
It used to be a regular posting but now you have turned this site into a hit or miss proposition. Your postings gave me a reason to believe that I haven’t totally lost touch with reality. I mean some of the stuff you wrote was way beyond what I would consider real. Only someone insulated by a degree of fame and who has some money could come up with a point of view that you exhibited here on this site. That’s not to say that I didn’t respect your entitlement to a voice in regards to the Philadelphia scene.

Larry, if you are suffering from Global Warming, please have a surrogate post a new blog. This was lame even by my low standards.
