How The Race Card Is Craftily Unfolded In Political Campaigns
Now that I’ve taken on scare tactics in weather forecasting, and now that Dennis Kucinich has pulled out of the Democratic race on the same day that UFO’s were sighted, it is time to tackle a difficult topic: race and its impact on the battle for the White House.
Race. Nobody talks about in the current Presidential race, but every campaign knows how to exploit it. I’ve seen it handled with manipulation , but all you have to do is listen carefully. In response to Bill Clinton’s attacks, Barack Obama’s regional director, Kevin Puleo, said, ““We don’t play the fear card, or the race card or the anger card,.”
Kevin, working in South Carolina, didn’t realize, or perhaps he did, that just making the statement made people think about race.
Bill Clinton spent the week bashing Obama, suggesting the candidate’s views were like a”fairy tale.” He told one group that it may be more important to elect a woman President before a black President. It happens again. Every mention of race means that people are helping other people think about it.
Clinton’s remarks have alienated black voters in South Carolina. To the white bigots there, and the rest of the country, that may appear to brand Hillary Clinton as a middle-of-the-Democratic conservative. Many people, with hate in their hearts, may like the fact that the Clinton’s are trying to take apart the most promising black Presidential candidate ever. I’m not saying that’s the Clinton’s motives, but again, the mention of race draws a line in the sand.
On the other side, Michelle Obama constantly reminds people of the epic struggle her husband is in. She is not afraid to talk about the challenges facing him in surmounting social obstacles , but again, it may be motivating racial thinking, one way or the other.
It is unfortunate but people are not color blind. That means, that subtly or not, politicians can exploit racial divisions by just, simply, bringing it up. In reality, why would anyone need to mention race, when it should be all character, integrity and competence.
It will be interesting to see tonight the impact of racial politics on the outcome of the nasty fued between Obama and Clinton.

The Clintons have conceded the SC election to Obama. Fifty percent of the Democratic voters in that state are Black. Since Hillary is no longer a favorite of the Black voter a change in her campaign tactics was needed. Instead of trying to court the Black vote Bill and Hillary want to draw a line between the Black and White vote. How many Whites are going to vote for an admitted coke using slumlord connected inexperienced Black “kid”? If people then vote along racial lines the superior number of white voters will guarantee a Hillary victory in the rest of the states. Please, people, we don’t need four more years of the Clintons in the White House. It’s as simple as ABC (Anyone But Clinton!)
hello Larry, you know the buzz word, all you have to do is mention Hillary and the Hillary haters come out from under the rocks and out of the closets.
have you ever seen obama talk in front all black audiences he has a different tone and style.
Hillary’s campaign is very impressive, and has obama on the ropes,
the Clintons are not racist the black community know that, it is obama’s people and the Hillary haters that want to make it sound like that, obama will be her toughest foe after him,she will take on the rightwing racist
party(oh that’s right obama’s related to chaney, yeah right)and that is why they are so worried.
larry,i am sure the mud will sling today but i will do my best to stay out of the personal attacks today.
larry,do you think Hillary will tap Ed Rendell as a very possible vp running mate in november?,i think he has a chance.
thanks larry, god bless and good luck
Hillbillary’s lapdog is back at it again, mention anthing Clinton, and he crawls out from under some slime in the Clinton’s yard…. Yea, JR that’s what we need Hillbillary and “Fat Eddie” with some more socialist tax and spend programs, as if Rendell hasn’t taxed PA enough since the moron got into office, you either have to be clueless or just don’t care when they are taking money out of your pocket and giving you nothing in return.
And, no matter what you say you know that Hilldog and 3$Bill will say anything and attempt to destroy anyone who gets in their way.
You keep bringing up the bathroom thing with Sen. Craig, but always keep quiet about the former “Democrap” Gov. in NJ coming out of the closet, also I don’t hear anything about Hilldogs supporter over there the idiot that now resides in Gov. mansion, who I’m sure most taxpayers in NJ wished would have met his demise in the accident.
And, let’s quit being cynical, spouting venom about republicans and always ending with a God Bless…. You and the rest of your socialist ilk are whats is wrong with this country, like I said before if you like soscialist policies so much, go to another country that already has these programs in play…..
hello mike:you must live in n.j…
clinton/rendell sounds like a pretty strong ticket.
why don’t you and the rightwing do-gooders take a eight year vacation in iraq.
that’s right god is only on the side of the bush/chaney/rove supporters.
thanks mike, god bless and good luck
Like I said you are in for a rude-awakening, hey what happend to your “Hillbillary-Obama” ticket? Now it’s “Fat-Eddie” and Hillbillary, loved the fact that Kerry endorsed Obama over Clinton and also came out after 3$Bill, so much for party loyalty eh? I would actually love to see “Hillbillary and Fat-Eddie”, wouldn’t be any problem to win that one, you dems have a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, ask Kerry-Edwards, if they couldn’t beat Bush in ‘04 they have no right to ever run for anything again.
As for me, no I live in PA and had the intelligence to get out of the cesspool that is Philly years ago, love a place that has a one-party “Democrap” system and then they wonder why there is so much corruption and crime, gee can’t imagine why.
Remember, “Fat-Eddie” tried his dog an pony show in the legislature a couple months ago and was slapped down like a whiny child, I’m sure that scored him some political points. And then we have a positive report in the Daily news today, that details his accomplishments in office, real easy to try and toot your own horn if the report on his Administration is done by his Administration.
I wouldn’t have a problem with going to Iraq for a while, hell my son felt so strongly about it, he himself joined and is in Kuwait right now for training and will be going into Iraq in the very near future. But, alas, I won’t have to because Hilldog and 3$Bill will sabotage themselves with their bitter, ambitious driven campaign against their own party members, guess the media is finally over their love affair with the “Dynamic Duds”!
hello mike,
i live in pa too,i will not call philly a cesspool, too many good people live there and it is on the righttrack, obama is burning his bridges with the Clintons and disrespecting $Bill,i was happy kerry endorsed obama to.
i hope your kid comes safe,my sister had 2 soldiers knocking on her door last summer,so i know how safe iraq is.
i hope your boy ‘past his prime’ mccain is not elected he will keep us in iraq for 100 years, and how do you feel when draftdodgers/chickenhawks bush/chaney/rove give lies (935) to send us to war.
atleast Hillary will end the war with 60 days after being sworn in,i think you will come around to Hillary and Bill soon.
How many white voters will vote for a candidate who used coke? Probably about the same number who voted for Bush, ignoring all the evidence of his coke use and his blatant alcoholism.
Unfortunately the Clinton smear campaign is working, Obama’s approval ratings from white voters has dropped since Bill/Hill began the subtle race attacks and sidetracked the Obama messages. Since all the Clintons care about is winning, that’s fine with them and too bad for the Democratic party that had the gall to adore somebody other than Bill or Hillary. Maybe we Edwards supporters will come out ahead in the end when they destroy Barack and Hillary melts down, but I’m certainly one Demo who will never vote for a Clinton again no matter sho she runs against. If she wants to campaign like a Republican, I’ll consider her a Republican.
Thanks for the sentiments on son coming home safe. But we really are on different sides of the spectrum, I would never, ever vote for a Lying Clinton…. And to be perfectly honest with you I don’t believe half of the half-truths that the media spouts out, all is done for ratings and very few truth in what they report, they “The Media” are truly what is ruining this country, I’d like to know whatever happened to unbiased journalism, it seems to be non-existent anymore, and I will not give Kudos to a mayor that thumbs his nose at state laws, I will be a happy person when the city is sued for violating a persons rights, which will come in the very near future, because myself would love to sue them, and possibly will do this sometime soon.
I honestly think the Clintons are doing a very large disservice to your political party, but that just makes it easier for a republican to gain the white house….
SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON IS GOING TO MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT.
CLINTON CAN’T EVEN MAKE A DECENT HUMAN-BEING, HOW COULD SHE POSSIBLY BE A GREAT PRESIDENT? AND, RIDDLE ME THIS BATMAN, WHAT HAS SHE DONE FOR US IN “35 YEARS”, I AM STILL WAITING FOR A COHERENT ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION FROM YOU CLINTONISTAS?
ANYONE CAN MAKE A STATEMENT, PLEASE BACK UP WITH FACTS!!!!!
I AGREE WITH JOHN,HILLARY CLINTON WILL MAKE A GREAT PRESIDENT!!!
Hi Mike
Instead of progressive people who care about all Americans and want to work to do something positive about improving the position of all Americans, why don’t you move to North Korea. Since you like Dictators who have no compassion for people and have hard-line military and social programs and no illegal immigration, you and lil Kim would make a great team…LOL I also hear their tax rates are very low. Maybe a year or two in North Korea would have you rethink your cesspool comments about our beloved city of Philly…
It is one thing not to like Governor Corzine or Rendell but to wish them dead is vile and disgusting.
If you think the Republicans are so great, then just look at their economic record over the last 7+years. We had an awesome economy under the Clinton Administration with no deficit spending. An economy that benefited all American workers not just the wealthiest of Americans as the Bush tax cuts have done. I’m not against tax cuts but tax policy should benefit all Americans not just a small percentage of the population.
In defense of Larry Kane, he has always reported with honesty and integrity. I do agree that like anything else in life, that there are some bad apples in the Media but the mainstream media for the most part does a great job. Larry Kane along with others like Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Brian Williams and the great John Facenda and Walter Cronkite are honorable reporters who deserve our respect and trust and not wild-ass accusations.
May God bless and keep your Son safe from harm in Iraq. My niece just shipped off to Afghanistan and I have had several nephews and cousins that have served in Iraq. Regardless of our respective positions on the Iraq War, we all should be honored and privileged to be served by such fine Men and Women in our Armed Forces. I am very happy to see that Americans have shown the respect that was not shown to a lot of our servicemen returning from Vietnam. I remember being cursed at and spat upon when I wore my uniform back then….but this is proof that things have gotten better….
So Mike, think positive thoughts for a day or two, it will do you a world of good…
larry,it is 7;00 pm saturday night, exactly 7;00 pm,the polls just closed in sc,yet all the cable stations and philly.com have declared obama the winner. Why bother to vote. The news mediapicks who they want to win and then they do everything they can to make sure that it happens. You are the only gentleman in the whole bunch.Russert is particularly rude, matthews, philadelphia should disown him,and all the rest make me sick.Remember President Lincoln said America would be destroyed from within.
Americas enemy is at hand and it is the American press.God help us.
Bill Clinton badly miscalcualted by playing the race card. Obama’s 2:1 landslide in SC and his historic speech tonight is a watershed event for the Democratic party, and marks the end for the Clintons. JFK’s daughter Caroline is going to annoint Obama as the true successor to her father’s legacy tomorrow and Obama will now steamroll to the nomination. Hey Andrew Cumo; Who’s “shucking and jiving now?” Hey Bill Clinton, 73% of South Carolina just voted against your wife, were they all “rolling the dice while reading a fairy tale high on drugs in their slumlord owned apartments?” It’s time for a change Hill & Bill!
Yes phillydan, let’s look at the Republican’s economic record over the past 7 years.
The Republican’s brought the economy out of the $hit-r after the 911 attacks. (thanks clinton). Since that time We’ve enjoyed record low unemployment and have been riding economic highs (until lately). Contrary to what you would have us believe, we’ve all benefitted from these great economic years. I know I have and I’m not rich. The Republicans got no credit for any of it. However the media and dems like you are quick to blame the Bush administration for the current situation. Rightly so perhaps, but you can’t have it both ways. If you’re going to blame him/them for the bad, you must credit them for the good). You can’t though. Your hate for Republicans wont allow it. Perhaps we should blame today’s economic downturn on the do nothing democrat congress now in charge? I know you guys would be blaming a Republican congress. And how did Clinton balance the budget? He raided Social Security.
One other thing, Mike never wished death on corzine or rendell. He said that taxpayers in nj were probably hoping for his demise after the accident.
Have a great evening
I have to agree that, on paper, the Reps have brought the economy to where it is now…they claim it is robust, more jobs than ever before, economic indicators are strong, etc., etc….but what they don’t tell you is the numbers are manipulated to come out any way the politicos want…
take a look at New Jersey, for example…
last month, Fuzz-face’s Labor Lord said that Fuzz-face created(?) 20,000 new jobs…here’s what a Rutgers job analyst said about that:
Of the 20,000 new jobs, 12,000 were new state and local governemnt jobs…that leaves 8,000, of those, 7,800 were in the fast food industry…that leaves 200 new jobs, not 20,000! And, to make matters worse, keep in mind those 60% new government jobs do not produce anything except a further drain on the taxypayer!
When a new union was formed at Rutgers and given a 20% pay-increase, here’s what Fuzz-face said …”I am pleased.”
And so it goes with both Demos and Repos…ha! The $600 buck rebate? What a joke…we are told to spend it. Yeah, that’s so we can pay the Exxon-Mobil credit card bill, because Bush is afraid we will cut back on driving…and ya gotta keep pouring money into the Big Oil Companies!
