I Can’t Believe It - More Reaction To My Comments On Tom Coughlin Than To Anything in Campaign 08
I now know how to get the biggest readership in one day ever on this site. And I’m a bit surprised. If you read the preceding entry from me, you will see that I took Giants coach Tom Coughlin to task for his behavior, his screaming at his kicker after he missed his first field goal attempt in the win over the Packers.
It was just another moralizing attempt by me to put things in perspective. You know how I am. I knew I would get reaction, but the visitors to the site were more than any single day since I launched this thing in the Summer of 2006.
That tells me a lot.
First of all, web readers respond more when it comes to sports than to other issues, like the war, the economy, the war on terror, and all the issues facing us. We have an enormous challenge ahead of us, especially in the economy. But what really gets me excited is that sports is king here. I mean, after all, the Eagles didn’t get there this year. And we have our share of bad news these days. So maybe sports is such a great diversion that people just get into it more, even if the Giants are going to the Super Bowl.
When there’s bad news on the doorstep, it’s nice to see a movie, or watch a game, or, especially, read a good book, several of which are advertised here. (I’m in the PLUG ZONE.)
Over the last several months, I have received many emails, mostly clean, very fascinating, and sometimes, nasty. The ones I received on this entry about Tom Coughlin were, at times, biting. That’s okay. Either the entries are written by people who honestly disagree, self-loathing Eagles fans (I’m sad for them. We still have a great team here) or Giants fans sending this website as one angry chain letter through the New York area.
The only letter that really upset me was the guy who called me “an old anchor who can’t get a job.” To him, I say that 65 is the new 40, unless you can’t spell your own name, which this guy could not.
He pretended to be Coach Tom, but he spelled the name COUGHLAN, so I know he’s a fake.
As far as Coach COUGHLIN, I wish him well.
And I hope he understands that true motivation is inspired by tough love, acts of courage, and not belittling your own player by berating him in front of hundreds of millions of people.
Have a great day everyone.

Larry, just wondering…are you the lonesome blogger on your Blog? (Do you have an admin assistant who sometimes replies to commentary on your blogs?)
Oh, regarding the age thing…I can relate as I am near your age at 62…
Tell ‘em the story about the old bull and the young bull, upon sighting a herd of cows…
and most of all, don’t take any of the nasty comments seriously as we are mostly all just venting and do not mean to wack you on a personal basis!
Hey Larry, you were truly “dead on” about Tom Coughlin. He hasn’t shown an ability to coach ever and it was extremely suprising to have even seen him back for this season. Belittling a player like that is never what a mediocre coach does let alone a good to excellent one, whether it be in front of a high school stands or on national TV.
Take heart Larry! Anyone who has any legitimate knowledge of the skills of leadership know that the abhorrent behavior shown is not right and anyone who wants to really know what we are talking about here and wants to expand their mind should read and digest the book by Coach John Wooden - “Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court”. Coughlin couldn’t even carry Wooden’s clipboard.
It says a lot about the product the NFL purveys when a coach with no talent and a mediocre at best team make the Super Bowl. Other than the NE Patriots, this season, this playoff string had proven that the NFL is a mediocre league with mediocre to poor product everywhere you turn. Mediocrity is never entertaining and the NFL hasn’t been entertaining in a very long time.
Thanks Larry and keep up the intelligent work.
Larry,
I am sometimes surprised at the lack of response to some postings but, this blog tends not to be as “inflamatory” as others. You don’t post radical opinions and the strongest reaction tends to come from regulars who spend as much time with interpersonal arguing as they do debating the topic.
It’s always a good read though, and your policing tends to keep it fairly civil.
I know of at least one former anchor in her thirties who may have a hard time finding a new job in news broadcasting.
It isn’t just sports but celebrity gossip and the Schadenfreude it gives rise to (e.g., Britney, Alycia) that dominate the American psyche. Cultural critic Neil Postman got it right a long time ago: we’re entertaining ourselves to death.
I had no idea you had a blog. This is a better work time waster than any other blog I’ve read today!
Love ya Larry-65 is the new 40! Why dont more in my Gen X age group pay attention to their elders…we dont have to agress, but we can learn from each other! If you blog in some small way can serve that purpose, keep up the good fight!
er, agree!
Hey Larry, you can stop with all this football stuff and get back to your portfolio. The stock market has rebounded
and it looks like the housing market might have good news. I know this diversion into football has shocked the foundation of what you consider good mentoring but maybe you will forgive Tom Coughlin for his actions on the field. And Larry the next time there is bad news at your doorstep and you need a diversion go rent the movie HELP!
Ed–Help! Good advice.
Joe: I write everything myself.
Leo–You are right on about the celebrity glam.
ChrisMarri–Glad I’ve kept you awake!
Hi Larry, don’t worry ’bout it! there are plenty of Eagles fans who agree with you 110%. It stinks that the Giants are in the Superbowl but hopefully the odds run through and New England takes it as predicted but we’ll just have to see.
