Run Silent, Run Deep – The Quiet Man is Awaiting His Moment
The quiet man waits in the shadows, as he did for so many years, a victim of torture and malnutrition. Given up for dead, in more ways than one, the quiet hunter seeks his prey, and like a Tiger in the grass, waits for the right moment.
The quiet man doesn’t need hordes of makeup artists and human handlers, because he’s lived the solo life as a guest, for five years, of a cruel and inhumane regime. Unlike the Mikes and the Mitts and the Rudy’s, the quiet man doesn’t need to grovel for votes with religious symbols or super-duper-big issue flips. No, the quiet man has stood his ground. No pseudo-politics here. Sometimes, courage finds its way into the journals of truth.
The quiet man needs no excuses for any of the moments of his life, good or bad. Unlike some of the other runners in the race, he runs silent and runs deep, because he is, deep. You may not agree with what the quiet man says, but you darn well that he means what he says. That in itself, is a modern miracle.
The quiet man turns crimson red when somebody betrays him. And there’s been alot of that. He is less cosmetic than the rest, and that in itself, becomes attractive. Even those who support others, list him as a second choice.
When the pack leaves Iowa, where the quiet man will finish third , the spotlight will be on New Hampshire, and there, he will draw close to the neighboring ex Governor.
The quiet man, John McCain, U.S. Senator, national hero, may be the last Republican standing.
Don’t underestimate him. In a miserable Republican field, he could emerge by February 5th as the leader.
The Democrats are praying for Huckabee or Romney.
John McCain, as the nominee, is their biggest nightmare.

Republicans are toast in ’08
But I’ll take McCain over Hillary Clinton.
How can you say no super-duper-big issue flips? What do you call his pandering to the radical religious right wing? In 2000, one could believe what he said but now he appears to say what’s convenient. And yet with all that, he probably the best of the Republican lot.
Oh please – another Democrat mantra… “radical religious right wing”… it doesn’t really exist. Exactly what is “radical” these days? Anyone who says “Jesus”? Anyone opposed to abortion on demand? You left wingers need some new material.
And what is “pandering”. You see the same so-called “pandering” of HillaryObamaEdwards to the kook left wing of the Democrat party. They all talk about pulling the troops out of Iraq when you know the reality is that they are not going to do that.
Larry is right – people are going to give McCain a second look. I thought he was out a month ago. But he’s going to do well I predict. Maybe not Iowa or NH, but later states.
With the Joe Lieberman endorsement, and with Lieberman helping him campaign, they are going to look like the two “adults” in the whole field of candidates, Democrat or Republican.
McCain may just pull it off in the end. Right now, I’m a Rudy guy but I could vote for McCain. I think a McCain-Lieberman ticket would be very formidable…
PROGRAMMING NOTE
Stay tuned for CN8 for all the late-breaking updates from Iowa City and Dubuque and Davenport.
I sure hope to see Boston Barry Nolan out there with his microphone leaving the school in Roosevelt, Iowa getting the feedback from the caucus-goers.
Should make for fascinating TV, as well as tremendous lead-in for the sports talk show at 11.
Run Silent Run Deep, wasn’t that a submarine movie? I think a better title for this story might be “Grumpy Old Men. How two old farts expect to take over the White House.” With no money and few Depends, two courageous US senators hope to do battle for the presidency. Being somewhat elderly and opinionated these two tell it like it is. Where they stand on the campaign issues I don’t know. Who cares. It’s the ability to just stand that matters most. This dynamic duo is just lurking in the shadows (they can’t afford a makeup artist) waiting for those whipper snappers to fall on their pancaked faces.
In the end after the dust has settled, will the Democrats have to face what they have feared most? Two old guys on a bus not going to a casino, or something more frightening….. Hillary Clinton as the Democratic presidential candidate.
Larry as usual you have done an outstanding job on “THE PEOPLE’S BLOG”
I have always liked McCain. If he is nominated, the Republican party will finally have adult supervision. Now if the Democrats can find someone who can show some adult supervision we might get this country back on the right (correct)track. So far in the past 16 years we’ve had two impetuous children running the country.
I’ve been watching McCain on and off most of the summer and fall while he has been here. It’s not the same McCain as we used to admire 4 years ago before he got shafted by Bush in S. Carolina and then spent 4 years in the Senate taking a stand on issues (like torture) only to back down and kiss the rings of King George and Pope Falwell. He’s looking old and tired at times. Answers ramble a bit motre than they used to. Sometimes he misses the point completely, like while taking the credit for the “improvement” (read that as relative quiet) in Iraq but totally oblivious as to what comes next. He will never live down the “Bomb, Bomb Bomb, Bomb Iran” video, not just a bad joke but maybe a sign of the instability that the Bush campaign warned about?
