Final Republican Debate Is A Sleeper - It Could Have Put You To Sleep
The last GOP debate was enough to make you crawl into bed and snooze. It was more than a snoozer. It was unconscious. Really. I thought with all the rapid movement of Mike Huckabee , everybody would go on the attack. Only Romney made some moves, but even there, it was polite. The big surprise was Rudy Guiliani proposing a 15 percent cut in health care spending, and blasting away at what he calls “nanny government.” That may haunt him if he wins the nomination.
I thought the Democrats have had some boring debates, but this one could send you away very fast.
What shocks me about ALL the candidates for President, with the exception of Joe Biden, is the fact that no one takes risks. Everything is the same, muddled, neutral and careful answers, spiced a little bit with humor. The Presidency requires risk taking. At least Barack Obama has a new sense of cooperation and idealism. That label of American Dreamer is what makes him so attractive to millions of people.
More and more. most candidates sound like the establishment. Americans have long believed that both parties are really the same, that change is not going to happen. The Democrats in Congress are proving them right. They walk on egg shells and are so careful it makes you want to scream. Joe Biden is the exception, and so is Bill Richardson, at times.
I think Obama stands out because he has a sincerity about him that is missing from most politicians. Of course, Jimmy Carter did and you see where that got us.
So we ramble on and hope for the best, once again wondering whether we will select the best of the worst. or tragically, the worst of the worst.
By the way, if you haven’t tuned into this political show yet. do so at your own risk and at your children’s risk. This is serious business and it is more than just the economy - it is lives lost, lives saved, and how we face the danger ahead.
Tune in. Although the debates have been yawns, the race is too important to pass up.
I remember my high school buddies in the early sixties who had no interest in the news.
And then came Vietnam.

That’s why we have coffee, Larry.
Who cares about all these talking heads. I’ve been watching Roy Oribson in Black and White. What a classic performer. Why did he have to die so young? I miss that guy. By the way Larry, Romney looked like the winner. I rarely cross the Walt Whitman bridge anymore but Larry don’t you think raising the toll to 5 bucks is a little excessive. That’s something I think we would all like to talk about.
Larry, have you ever seen such a motley crew of candidates.
Larry i think there is a cure for insomnia, and i would not vote for those sadsacks to be dog-catcher.
Larry it is a shame how Bush has taken his party into the gutter.
Larry, like you said a couple days ago the republicans are in big trouble they already have defeat in their eyes.
Larry there is a big difference between the two parties and that is HILLARY CLINTON.
Oh, you mean the risk that Biden took when he plagerized the McKinney speech? And succeeded in scamming a sucker like you, no doubt! I guess your support of Biden means that you approve of plagerism, no?
The real results of the debate that you apprently missed are the “issues” whihc truly are important to moderate Reps and conservative Reps.
Here’s your assignement, Larry:
Review the debate tapes and tell us, in order, which issues are most important to the republican voters! I’ll give you a hint: Follow the yellow lines for conservative and follow the blue lines for moderates.
Beatle-boy
What did you HONESTLY expect? These debates are ubiqituous these days. There was one in my office a few weeks ago.
You get my point.
The more we have, the less important they are.
Like everything these days, its over-saturation.
I agree with Ed. Lets talk about the bridge increases. I am alerting my friends to pay in dimes. “Hey DRPA, here are 50 dimes….enjoy!”
Here we go JR again, on the Hillary stump, still have not said why she is so “QUALIFIED” what she has done! Must be as clueless about her candidacy as she is, considering her views change constantly, depending on what group she’s speaking to at the time, that’s why she is losing ground in Iowa, people are tired of her not taking a position on anything. Get over JR, isn’t going to happen….
Spyderman, some of Larry’s columns do come up a little lame, however thanks for the compliment. My problem is that I suffer from what is known in the medical field as antiCOMPLIMENTitis. If you have ever played golf you’d understand. You could be having the best day of your life on the course, trouncing your opponent and then all of the sudden your opponent says ” Man you are really playing great.” The next thing you know it’s “crack” “splash” your ball just ended up in the lake. End of story.
Britney Spears suffers from a version of this disease. In her case she actually takes compliments to heart. She really believes that she is talented. WE see her strutting her fat uncordinated lip singing butt on stage when in reality….
In the final stages of this disease pictures of your private parts end up being splashed all over the Internet.
Spyderman, I know you don’t want to see my private parts splashed all over the Internet. I now have a dilemma. How will I react to your compliment?
For you ladies out there however photographs of my johnson can be viewed on Craig’s List. Just look for a Studly -Do-Right.
What do you expect from what appears to be the social committee of the local men-only country club engaged in a “mine’s bigger” pissing contest?
What else can these twits add other than “I’ll throw the illegals out faster than you”, “I’ll nuke Iran faster than you”, “I’ll cut taxes and increase our already exploding debt for our friends faster than you”.
Quite honestly, they should forego the “debates”, and just go up on stage, drop their drawers, get out the ruler, and the winner gets to lose to the Democrat.
Yo Ed
Dont jump to conclusions.
As Lee Corso loves to say “Not so fast my friend!”
Perhaps I would want to see those parts splashed :)
Maybe thats how I roll…
One never knows …
Spidey
PS I am just kidding. No need for your parts around here. Just keep up the good work. And yes, I agree that some of BeatleBoy’s columns do come up quite lame.
Hey, you know I was just thinking the other day that Philly.com didn’t have enough baby boomer liberals blogging the same opinions. Lo and behold, Larry Kane is ON THE SCENE!
This blog is awesome, and it appears you really knocked it out of the park here with your “insider commentary”.
You really came up with some original thoughts that can’t be found elsewhere on Philly.com. Thanks for providing us with a diverse viewpoint!
I hope that Badideaguy wasn’t talking about me when he described this site as liberal. I know Mike would’t appreciate it. Hey, I’m still trying to defend Bush. How many Republicans are doing that? How many of anybody is trying to do that? His dogs don’t even want any part of him. I heard they don’t even allow him to pick up their poop. ……..
Hey wait a minute here am I the only one who has anything nice to say about George. Carl Rove where are you?
Hey Ed,
I’d still rather have Bush in the Whitehouse over the treasonous traitor Kerry anyday. And I can’t say anything good about the Clintons, except they are very good at distorting the truth. But I’m sure JR would have rather had his fellow left-leaning dem Kerry there, so when 9/11 happened, he could have went over and had lunch with Bin Laden.
Larry, it’s been colder than normal out here in Iowa since Thanksgiving, there have been several irritating ice storms and twice as much snow as usual for December, everyone is behind in shopping and uneasy about going to the Mall, we’ve been deluged with these political commercials and phone calls for months and months, have seen all the candidates in person more than we normally would have, and really won’t make our final decision until we reach the caucus room and decide exactly how best to utilize our vote to max delegates for the candidates we like. Don’t expect any candidate in any party to ruin the Holiday feeling that is finally developing. Nobody can afford to be a Grinch at this point. Everybody smile while inserting that knife into other backs.
I didn’t think the debate was a sleeper when Ron Paul had the opportunity to speak. His clear message and personal intergrity are very exciting. He speaks to enthusiastic crowds everywhere he goes. His ideas make so much sense it is enough to wake up all those who have grown tired of all the lies, flip-flopping, and senseless personal attacks. Google Ron Paul and I challenge anyone not to be excited at the thought of an alternative to “politics as usual”.
i happen to work at the White House and thought you might be interested in a note I found on
george Bush’s desk.
Dear GW,
Just got back from lunch with Don Rummy, Gen Powel, Al Gonzalez,
First off I don’t work for the White House and secondly there was no note and thirdly my name really isn’t Ed and fourthly I really do not exist.
If Larry mentions the democratic presidential debate in his next blog I am going to scream. That thing was so scripted I wanted to puke. The exchange between Obama and Biden discussing Biden’s racial misstatements was like watching Days of Our Life. This whole campaign is turning into a soap opera.
ok mike you know my candidate is hillary, who is your candidate you never say.
put up or shut up!
also mike do you have any affiliation to flip flop mike that blogged in yesterday.
and finaly you can get serious time for abusing a dog.
my partner and i are life long republicans after watching the depate i like romney because he has great hair, my partner edward likes john mccain because he is so hard,i fliped from huckabee because he reminds me of jim nabors ‘goooooly”,now edward floped to fred thompson because he likes his candidates big.
to those dirty leftwing traitors, you’re hipocrites!!
Yeah, Larry, is it possible that the Demo debate actually kept you awake?
I think we should pay attention to what politicians do and not at what they say!! Spitzer is a good example and Obama is another!
ABCNews.com Analysis Shows the Campaign Still Hasn’t Returned More Than $100,000 in Questionable Contributions
By AVNI PATEL
Jan. 28, 2008—
Despite claims over the weekend from Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama that his campaign had given away all the donations connected to accused fixer Antoin “Tony” Rezko, the campaign has not returned more than $100,000 in donations from Rezko’s wife and 20 other Rezko-linked donors, according to an ABCNews.com review.
“What we’ve done is we’ve traced any funds that we know of that we think were connected to him,” said Obama during an appearance on “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos. “And if there any other funds that were connected to him that we’re not aware of, then we will certainly return them. It is in our interest to do so.”
On Friday, campaign spokesman Bill Burton dismissed the ABC News findings and others from the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Sun-Times, stating “we think they are casting a wide net and overestimating.”
The campaign has donated to charity more than $85,000 of Rezko-linked contributions since Rezko was indicted on federal fraud charges in the fall of 2006. Burton said the campaign’s best estimate of what Rezko has raised is $60,000, including contributions from a fundraiser Rezko held for Obama in 2003, but acknowledges that it does not have an exact record of what Rezko raised. “We review our donations, and where there are questions, we make decisions about donating to charity those which, in the circumstances, do not seem appropriate to retain,” said Burton.
The Obama campaign statements have left some campaign finance watchdogs perplexed. “I don’t understand why they didn’t do a top-to-bottom audit and divest themselves of these funds,” said Cynthia Canary of the Illionois Campaign for Political Reform.
The revelation that Rezko may have used “straw donors” to funnel tainted money to Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign has further cast a cloud of suspicion over the Rezko-linked contributions. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on Jan. 20 that Obama was the unnamed “political candidate ” referred to in a court document in the Rezko case last month accusing Rezko of directing two associates to contribute to Obama’s campaign, and reimbursing them with money from an kickback scheme.
Much of the scrutiny surrounding Obama’s relationship with Rezko has centered around a real estate deal involving Obama’s home on the South Side of Chicago. Obama says he approached Rezko for “advice” as he sought to purchase the house in 2005. The owner of the house was trying to sell the a neighboring vacant lot as a part of the deal, Obama later told the Chicago Tribune he could not afford to buy the lot because “it was already a stretch to buy the house.”
Rezko’s wife, Rita, purchased the vacant lot and later sold a part of it to Obama to expand his yard. Obama has since called his decision to involve Rezko in the deal “a bone-headed mistake.”
