CALIFORNIA FIRES LIGHT UP A NATION’S AWARENESS

Like Katrina in 2005, the heat in California has reminded all of us how vulnerable we are to the forces of nature, especially in the places we consider to be “paradise”, Florida, the beautiful Gulf Coast and now the state of California. There is a bit of a difference in the California crisis. State officials have risen to the task with an aggressive battle on two fronts: coordinated evacuations and fierce against-the-odds firefighting. This time, the Federal government has responded quickly. That should not be a surprise because we elect and pay these people to protect us.

Governor Arnold has turned into a real life action figure, pouring all the resources of his huge nation-state into protecting people.. What has also impressed me is the fighting spirit and determination of the evacuees who walk away from their homes and apartments with little sense of whether they can ever go back.

There are reports of possible arson. That, if true, would be a tragic postscript to this amazing story. That someone would actually start fires like that is really the unthinkable.

I have also been impressed with how quickly the nation’s media saw the scope, the wide ranging impact of this natural disaster.

Here, in our region, we face rain storms, blizzards and some ice conditions. After looking at the scenes from California, I feel lucky to live in area that faces few of the risks of California and other states. But, as Americans, we have long held the feeling of being as one nation in a time of crisis. The California fires, though thousands of miles away, hit us hard. We pride ourselves at being the most organized nation in the world, but when events exceed our grasp, we remain physically and emotionally vulnerable to the situations we cannot control.

Standby -This Could Be A Big Week

Don’t know if it will happen early this week, but state indictments are imminent in an investigation of alleged pay irregularities in the Pa. State Legislature.

This will also be the week when the battle for County Commissioners heats up in Monto. Monday night, October 29, KYW 1060’s Brad Segall and I will moderate a debate between Republicans Matthews and Castor, and Democrats Hoeffel and Damsker at Montgomery County Community College and sponsored by the League of Women Voters and KYW Newsradio. The whole nation is watching this one.

On the Mayoral front, Michael Nutter is still haevily favored. Republican Al Taubenberger, who has been impressive and classy, should sue for non-support from the Philly Republican party. While Nutter is being backed by his party, Taubenberger is on his own. What ever happened to the two party system in Philadelphia.

Also this week: The World Series begins. Ailing Eagles fans are savoring those exciting Phillie’sn days, but the Flyers are making us forget. All in all, it’s matter of what should have been. But at least we now know the Rockies were for real.

Feedback on Nasty Ann Coulter Shows Why She Is Dangerous

I am blown away by the comments and reaction to my news blast at Ann Coulter for her latest demagoguery. What a mess she creates. We have one letter writer who talks about “Jew-Coddling.” Others have suggestive comments. Still others get my point.

If you can’t get the “comments” through a link, go DIRECTLY to www.larrykane.com. These reactions are testament to the fact that Coulter brings out the best and worst in people. But, as a segment of the populace, they are fascinating notes.

A final note for now: The arrest of a student in Montco for allegedly preparing a school attack is a  perfect example of the need for people to come foward.

If you see something suspicious, don’t delay. It is better to be thorough than to be sorry.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP NASTY ANN COULTER ON THE DEFENSIVE

The reaction to the Ann Coulter story is no surprise. Frankly, she brings out the best and worst in us. The best is the realization that Coulter, trapped within her own tortured mind, has pretty well run her course and has now become a liability to her conservative fans, those who are remaining.

The worst is the haters who buy her exploitative brand of hatred, her spewing of negativity about minorities, the poor, Jews and her favorite target – anyone who disagrees with her.

Normally, Coulter goes on the attack. A storm of controversy follows, and we just forget, trying to put the nasty aftermath out of our minds.

But this is different. Nasty Ann has taken her bigotry bashing to a new dimension.

Why do I keep writing about this? It bothers me that Americans continue to make her books best sellers, when they are filled with the kind of invective that only mad bigots would write. It also disturbs me that the major networks give her the time of day. It is bad enough that we are obsessed with celebrity malcontents like Spears and Hilton. Now, we attempt to glorify an intellectual weakling whose sole claim to fame is outrage and intolerance.

This is quite a year. We have Britney, Paris, Larry Craig, the steroid scandals, and always close to the media heartland is Ann Coulter.

Frankly, it is time that good and decent people to continue writing about her verbal indecency. It is time to use the paper in her books to wrap the fish. It is time to let her know that her act is getting old. Maybe she’s thin-skinned, and will hide in a cocoon.

I doubt it. But we can try, can’t we?

“SICKO”-PART TWO — THE ANN COULTER STORY

Michael Moore’s movie on health care. SICKO, should have a sequel - a full length mockumentary on the the life and times of Anne Coulter, the woman who parades as a conservative but actual has the idealism of a race-baiting, Jew-hating, media manipulating marketer of modern day fascism. And this comes to you, my friends. from this observer, a true moderate.

In recent years. many conservatives have supported NASTY ANN, only to find out that her message of hate and division spare no one. Her latest target, Jewish people who Ann feels need to be “perfected.” Ann would have felt very comfortable in 1932, and probably would have worn a brown shirt and joined the wave of hated that ended in the Holocaust.

Many defenders of her right to speak out have talked about her writing talents, and fame. Believe me, she is a phony , a figment of her own imagination, and a person who is beyond selling her books by being outrageous. She is a damaging person.

Ann Coulter needs help. She is apparently emotionally disabled and psychologically challenged.

Her words divide. Her hate is apparent. The only thing left is for networks to tell her that she is not welcome.

If that doesn’t happen, social conservatives might want to consider letting her hate-mongering books rot on the shelves.

In the meantime, I now know the truth. Ann can’t help herself. She is angry and must go on the attack. Her targets have included 9/11 families, moderates and now, Jews.

I hope she gets help.

In the meantime, maybe Columbia University can invite her to speak. It would fit the hypocritical pattern of inviting the promoters of hate!

As I said, Michael Moore should make the docu-mock-umentary called “SICKO” PART TWO.
