The comments about Israel in his last book were extremely irresponsible. In my lifetime, Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush the Father and Clinton all tried to work with their predecessors/successors. Despite political differences, they all managed to do that reasonably well. Carter has not. He has tried to undercut every President who came after him and seems to have gotten gradually worse with Clinton and now the current President Bush. Maybe he's jealous of his successors or just egotistical. Doesn't matter. It's inexcusable for a former President to adopt this type of public behavior.
