It Is About Time – Government Starts Moving on Veterans Abuses

The Bob Woodruff special on ABC really brought it home, not just his remarkable recovery, but the stories of the many veterans who have suffered brain injuries in Iraq. And once again, the special broadcast outlined the deficiencies, red tape and disorganization that have plagued the efforts to heal the wounds of those who served and suffered.

Finally, yesterday, there was some firm government action against this extraordinary neglect. The Commander of Walter Reed Medical Center was relieved, after news reports of unsavory conditions and treatment at the hospital. What is so amazing and disturbing about this story is that it took so many media reports for the government to finally take action.

The story of the veteran’s nightmares in dealing with the government have been  increasing in recent weeks. Some of them are so shocking that it makes you sick with disgust. Please read my story on VP Cheney down below.

What makes me even more angry is how long it took for the government to act. We are quick to go to war, but slow and unresponsive to help our veterans. It continues to be a national disgrace.

And we, the people, are partially responsible. We wrap ourselves in the stories of Anna Nicole, Britney, Paris Hilton and all the other vacuous celebrity nighmares, while those who really count get low priority in the news.

What have we come to? And why are we so slow to react?

    Larry,
In 1969,when I was 12 years old, I was hit by a car. Because my father was active duty Navy, I was admitted to the Philadelphia Naval Hospital and placed on ward with vets returning from Vietnam. Amputees of all kinds, quadraplegics, you name it. And because I was just a kid, they treated me so nice in spite of their injuries and the fact they were getting screwed over by the nitwits who sent them over in the first place. As a person who also served in the Navy(75-81), I watch with both disgust and horror as these same scenes are replayed 40years later. The same jerks who sent them over, are the same jerks who screw them over…Shame on our so called leaders.

Hi Larry, I went to the Veterans Hospital cardiac unit and requested for the second time a letter from my cardiologist that states the Uiversity of Minnesota dental school can go on with my dental work. This was my second request. I Had spent my money on getting the 2 prep exams and a few work appointments at the University of Minnesota. Then i came one day to the U. Of M. and i was sweating as i had walked 1-1/2 miles to the appointment and the head dentist stopped my work demanding a note from my cardiologist. I enden up loseing 3 teeth with painfull recoveries with dry sockets. I thought i was going to have a heart attack from my pain from not getting my work done. As i waited for a note from cardiologist i went to a private dentist and spent $2,000 and still lost the three teeth. Rick Brandt 763-571-5829
