Eagles’ Comeback Lights Up The Region – Fans (Me Included) Gave Up Too Soon

There are moments in the world of news and sports that are absolute delights. They’ve been few and far between in this region, but the Eagles’ comeback from near total defeat to a real contender for the big prize, is one of them.

Unfortunately, pessimism is part of the life of Philly fans. Stirred up by vivid memories of the past, and a defeatism motivated by many sports writers who should know better, the Philadelphia fan always feels like the town can never get a break. Well, I say, get over it. This particular victory was sweeter than ever because of all the odds against the team. The fans don’t play. The players play. The fans gave up before the players, feeling onced again cursed by the fickle finger of fate. The fans wanted a different quarterback than the coach. Some of the fans even suggested we look for a new coach. The coach is obviously a smarter guy than all of us.
In a way, this Eagle’s streak was even more exciting than the other years. What a setting for drama it was. The star quarterback is injured. The backup is doubted. The backup plays the role of the “Rocky” underdog that area fans love. A year ago, Jeff Garcia looked all washed up in Motown. The team responds to him. The sports writers, ever so cynical, start warming up to the team when the team gets hot.

After forty years plus in this town, I have become addicted to the cynical sports behavior pattern. I became a Philadelphia sports fan – always doubtful, forever wary, wondering if we would lose even when we were way ahead.

I am trying to cure that problem.

We all should.

Be proud, Stand tall. Be prepared. We are only three wins away from a trip to Miami.

Can it be? Will we get the big prize in the year when we gave up too soon, and when we thought it was over?

What a pleasure it is to take a break from writing about all the grief in our world.

Thanks to the Eagles for giving us a reason to smile.

    Well, Larry…

I have been a die-hard Philly Sports fan since I could crawl in subirban Philadelphia as a child. I never give up on my teams, and I never write them off until they do it to themselves.
There was no doubt in my mind that the Iggles would pull this off. I am not a gambler, but in my office, I even told folks last week (before the clilncher) that, if they played the pools, etc., then my upset pick of the week would be Detroit over Dallas. See, Larry, I am a phan of the Iggles and whoever is playing the Cowboys!
And now, Spring Training is less than two months off, and I am getting ready to root-on the Phightin’ Phils!
One thing that many of my friends out here do ahve to admit – Philadelphia is a great sports town – as long as their teams are winning!
Happy New Year and all the best to you in 2007!
