Questions: First Lady Cancer Scare – Brady Bunch Ready? – McNabb Quiet – Spitball in the NFL

Word that First Lady Laura Bush had a cancerous growth removed from her leg in November will put many Americans on notice about the constant danger from cancers of the skin. The good news is that she was treated before it could spread.

When people in the public eye encounter health dangers, there is always a benefit to the general public. It makes people pay more attenton to their own health. Laura Bush’s cancer problem, now public, will save lives. What surprises this reporter is why the White House waited so long to release the information. The delay may be indicative of a more complex medical problem, or just the First Lady’s desire for privacy.

A political note. Congressman Bob Brady’s decision on whether to run for Mayor will come on Thursday. The popular Brady, also Philadelphia’s Democratic Party Chairman, will no doubt make the run.

A question. Why, at this late date, would Mayor John Street publicly express his support for the Planet Hollywood casino project on the Delaware River? He has no official say on who gets the deal. The Gaming Commission will decide tomorrow. The city would make millions by selling the waterfront property. But why would Street make this public statement, unless he knows something? I find it odd, and a bit troubling. There are four other applicants. It seems unfair that the Mayor is touting one of the five at this late moment.

Another mystery: We’ve heard little from Donovan McNabb since he’s been injured. He has wished Alan Iverson well. But so far, no public comments or public display of emotion about the Eagle’s revival.

Also on the subject of football: T.O. doesn’t know how to act like a man. The Philadelphia exile has done well in Dallas. But he once again marred his imagery by spitting at an opposing player during the Atanta game. So much for role models. The Eagles will face T.O. and the Cowboys on Christmas Day. It will be a moment of reckoning and hopefully Mr. Owens will keep his mouth shut in more ways than one.

WHAT A WEEKEND! A BAD DAY FOR THE MASTER OF HATE — MORE PHILADELPHIA MAYORAL BUZZ —THE GIANTS ARE NOT GIANTS

Could it be happening?

Is the shine off that celebrated Holocaust denial leader, President Ahmadenijad of Iran?

President Terrorist had his head handed him politically in the Iranian mid-term elections, a series of municipal elections held throughout the country yesterday. Candidates loyal to opposition leaders who have been critical of the fiery President scored victories in a wide geographical swath across the country.

There was also another turning point this past week. State-run television, under the control of the religious leaders of the country, allowed vocal criticism of the Iranian President, an apparent sign that the Mullahs are getting restless.

Will this change the Iranian President’s genocidal rhetoric? Probably not. But it may temper his overt attempts to stifle his opposition. That is good news fo America and the western nations, who fear that a nuclear Iran could begin a global conflict.

Back in Philadelphia, candidates and fund raisers are waiting on Congressman Bob Brady. Decision day, we have learned, will come soon. It is widely presumed that Brady will run for Mayor, now that his ally Jonathan Saidel has withdrawn. But nothing is a certainty. Sources say that Brady will announc his intentions “shortly.”
A Sports Note – There is nothing more gratifying than watching the Giants go down at the hands of the Eagles. Yesterday’s game was gritty and chaotic, just the kind of football we expect in December. Eagles fans who yelled boos at backup QB Jeff Garcia looked a little silly a few weeks back. But winning is all about desire, and Garcia, in a fill-in role, has enough desire for the whole team. To a “newsie” like me, sports is the greatest diversion from all the crazy things that are happening in the world. The thrill is back for the Eagles. You gotta love it!

Readers Respond – The Debate Simmers Over Jimmy Carter’s Blast At Israel

Note: You can file and read comments below each story. But I accidentally erased some of the letters on my commentary concerning Jimmy Carter and his controversial book. So I have decided to print them again below. You can write back in the “comments” section of this or any other article. I’m sorry I lost the previous letters. I have retrieved them. Will The Real Jimmy Carter Please Stand Up! Is This The Real Jimmy Carter?

My recent comments about Jimmy Carter have caused quite a stir. That’s good because President Carter has crossed the line in his new book, “Palestine-Peace Not Apartheid.” This man of peace has brought a respected voice , along with a failure to address the facts, to validate the arguments of many anti-semites around the world that Israel is soley to blame for the current crisis in the Middle East.

I am not saying that President Carter is an anti-semite. But his reaction to a proposal that he debate Alan Dershowitz about the book, shows me a lot. For one, he suggests that criticizing Isreal in this country is taboo. That is simply not accurate. His refusal to debate Dershowitz is his choice. But his choice of words in his remarks about Israel show me a naive man who I always suspected was against the concept of Israel.

The suggestion that Israel is for apartheid is outrageous. In 1979, that nation gave up a big chunk of land to secure a peace with Egypt and Jordan. That peace, engineered by President Carter, still stands. In more recent years, Israel gave up Gaza, and Israel pulled out of South Lebanon. What Israel got for those gestures of peace was Hizbollah and Hamas, two certifiably terrorist organizations. What Israel received in return was rockets and attacks on civilians.

Mr. Carter fails to acknowledge this, and furthermore, lays no responsibility on the terrorists in Hamas that know no way but guns and bombs. It is one thing when people like David Duke and President Ahmadenijad of Iran spread their horrible hate across the world.

It is another thing when a former American President uses the prestige of his position to foster hate and intolerance by blaming a tiny country, a place of hope for the oppressed, as an alleged perpetrator of apartheid,

President Carter likes to build homes for the needy in his spare time. In this case, he is ripping apart the basic foundation that brought about the miracle that is Isreal– democracy and opportunity. The fact remains that the Palestinians do want a state. Their leadership seeks a state of war against Israel. And may I remind President Carter that Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East.

President Carter owes the people of America an apology for trying to divide rather than unite. He has given the anti-semites a powerful ally in the great lie that has been spread by the terrorists and the gangster-murderers of the Middle East – that somehow or other, this nation of Israel, small in population and size, has proliferated an apartheid.

That, President Carter, is a disgrace to your legacy.

Other groups and individuals haved blasted Mr. Carter. I am just angry and sad that a man who knows better has used the freedom of his words to attack an ally of America.

As far as those who have written about my remarks: thank you for your input. I respect all opinions. Some of you think that I don’t comprehend what the 39th President is really aiming to do. You are wrong. He has done more, in his current anger against Isreal, to motivate and encourage the nasty hatreds that linger in people’s minds about Jews and Israel.

President Carter should clean up his act. It is the least we can expect from a former President.

In the meantime, keep those comments coming..
